  • An experimental study has been conducted at an intermediate scale to study the effect of a cross flow on a purely buoyant fire. Video taping of the flame and post processing of the images by means of a novel technique provide a contour of a mean flame for all cases studied. This flame contour allows the determination of a mean flame length and a mean flame height. The mean flame length and height are recorded as functions of the forced flow velocity. Three dimensional flow patterns are formed in the flame trailing edge affecting both the mean flame length and height. The three dimensional patterns are studied systematically as functions of the cross flow velocity to quantify the effect of confinement on the flame geometry.

  • This paper presents a set of candidate regulatory requirements for TV band devices (TVBDs) in the Rep. of Korea. To guarantee the protection of incumbent services, especially digital TV (DTV) and wireless microphones, in TV frequency bands, we suggest minimum separation distances of TVBDs from the noise-limited contour according to incumbent users and TVBD types. This paper also deals with multiple sets of separation distances of a co-channel TVBD network from a DTV protected contour on the basis of the radio propagation characteristics of different geographic areas to make good use of TV white space (TVWS) and safely protect the DTV service. We present a low-power transmission mode of TVBDs and the relevant separation distances for small-cell deployment. The service coverage reduction ratio of a TVBD network is investigated in the presence of DTV interference in four geographic areas. The TVWS field verification results, conducted on the island of Jeju (Rep. of Korea), show that incumbent services operate well without harmful interference from neighboring TVBDs with the proposed separation distances.

  • High current behaviors of extended drain n-type metal-oxide-semiconductor field effects transistor (EDNMOS) with double polarity source (DPS) for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection are analyzed. Simulation based contour analyses reveal that combination of bipolar junction transistor operation and deep electron channeling induced by high electron injection gives rise to the second on-state. Therefore, the deep electron channel formation needs to be prevented in order to realize stable and robust ESD protection performance. Based on our analyses, general methodology to avoid the double snapback and to realize stable ESD protection is to be discussed.

  • Automatic reclosing is a typical protection method in power distribution systems for the clearing of temporary faults. However, it has a fatal weakness in regards to voltage sags because it produces repetitive voltage sags. In this paper, we explored the repetitive impact of voltage sag due to the automatic reclosing of power distribution systems. The actual tests of low voltage loads were carried out for obtaining the susceptibility of voltage sags. The final results of the tests yielded power acceptability curves of voltage sag, and the curves transformed the 3-dimensional CBEMA (Computer Business Equipment Manufacturer Association) format. For the quantitative evaluation of the impact of repetitive voltage sags, an assessment formulation using the voltage sag contour was proposed. The proposed formulation was tested by using the voltage sag contour data of IEEE standard and the results of the test. Through the case studies, we verified that the proposed method can be effectively used to evaluate the actual impact of repetitive voltage sags.

  • Objective : Traditionally, standard access to the posterior fossa was a suboccipital craniectomy. After introducing the technique and benefit of posterior fossa craniotomy, several surgeons have used this procedure to manage various pathologies in posterior fossa in children. Though this approach offers several advantages over conventional suboccipital craniectomy, the elevation of bone flap is not easy in adult because of the irregular contour of inner bone surface and tight adhesion of dura to the skull. The aim of this article is to describe the technical aspects of this approach and to delineate the important landmarks for a safe and quick performance in adult. Methods : We report on our series of twenty-five adult patients who underwent craniotomy for posterior fossa pathologies between 2002 and 2005. The maximal follow-up period was 4 years. Results : None of the patients complained of persistent headache and no CSF leaks have occurred postoperatively. We have encountered only two cases of transient subcutaneous CSF retention after craniotomy. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the CT scan confirmed the well-fitted suboccipital bone contour after craniotomy. And patients were satisfied with the cosmetic results. Conclusion : This method is safer and simpler. It restores normal anatomical planes and improves protection of the contents of the posterior fossa. The authors recommend craniotomy as an alternative method of access to the posterior fossa in all age groups.

  • A numerical model, in the form of a computer program, for evaluating the fire resistance of insulated wide-flange steel columns is presented. The three stages associated with the thermal and structural analysis in the calculation of fire resistance of columns is explained. The use of the computer program for tracing the response of an insulated steel column from the initial pre-loading stage to collapse, due to fire, is demonstrated. The validity of the numerical model used in the program is established by comparing the predictions from the computer program with results from full-scale fire tests. Details of fire tests carried out on wide-flange steel columns protected with ceramic fibre insulation, together with results, are presented. The computer program can be used to evaluate the fire resistance of protected wide-flange steel columns for any value of the significant parameters, such as load, section dimensions, column length, type of insulation, and thickness of insulation without the necessity of testing.

  • As a growing number of individuals are exposed to surveillance cameras, the need to prevent captured videos from being used inappropriately has increased. Privacy-related information can be protected through video encryption during transmission or storage, and several algorithms have been proposed for such purposes. However, the simple way of evaluating the security by counting the number of brute-force trials is not proper for measuring the security of video encryption algorithms, considering that attackers can devise specially crafted attacks for specific purposes by exploiting the characteristics of the target video codec. In this paper, we introduce a new attack for recovering contour information from encrypted H.264 video. The attack can thus be used to extract face outlines for the purpose of personal identification. We analyze the security of previous video encryption schemes against the proposed attack and show that the security of these schemes is lower than expected in terms of privacy protection. To enhance security, an advanced block shuffling method is proposed, an analysis of which shows that it is more secure than the previous method and can be an improvement against the proposed attack.

  • The project concentrates on an hydrological analysis. The analysis consists of rainfall, infiltration, Determination of runoff and sediment yield. The risque of erosion and the control measures are related to the slopes and land use. Therefore the first approach to erosion must be correct land use based on land classification. Basically there are two types of mechanical protection works; Drainage and Storage. Realization of a drainage system will be very costly and therefore temporary storage is preferred. For farmland in flat areas hardly any measures are needed. For farmland on slopes temporary storage can be effected by applying tillage with ridges within contour bunds. Along roads infiltration pits should be constructed and in areas with houses, the solution to avoid runoff will be water harvesting.
