Objectives : This study was a methodological study to verify the validity and reliability of the translated and modified Older Patients in Acute Care Survey-US (OPACS) tool, which was originally developed by Dikken and his colleagues. Methods : The OPACS was translated into Korean, and the content validity, composition validity, and reliability were verified using 348 nurses working for hospitals with over 200 beds and located in C city, B city, and K province. Results : The analysis showed that the Korean version of the OPACS had of eleven questions in the practice experience section and twelve in the general opinion section for older patients in the acute phase. Cronbach's ${\alpha}s$ were 0.84 for practice experience and 0.81 for general opinion. Conclusions : The study showed that the OPACS could measure the practice and opinion of Korean nurses who cared for elderly patients in the acute phase. The significance of the study was that it provided baseline data information regarding the performance and opinion of these nurses for nursing managers to improve the nursing environment.
The Profile of Mood States (POMS) is the most widely used self-report instrument for the measurement of affect or mood in clinical and nonclinical populations. This paper reports on the translation and testing of a Korean version of the POMS. The translation involved three steps: translation, checking agreement, and panel discussions to arrive at consensus. Then, the Korean version of the POMS was tested with a sample of 47 healthy Koreans who lived in the U.S.; they completed the instrument in the morning, at the beginning of work and in the evening, at the end of work. Internal consistencies for the total scale and subscales were high (alphas = .93 and .94). Face and content validity and the cultural relevance of the Korean version of the POMS were tested through review by five bilingual Korean nursing scholars who were familiar with Korean culture and with the current literature on affect, feeling or mood in both English and Korean. The Korean version of the POMS was then compared with the Haeok Fatigue Behavior Check-list and demonstrated with concurrent validity (r = .87, p < .001). Construct validity was established by demonstrating significant differences between the scores on the Fatigue and Vigor subscales (p < .001) at the beginning work and at the end of work.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of injury risk perception in preschool children. Method: Employing a methodological research design, data were collected using questionnaires from a sample of 178 child day care center preschooler selected by convenient sampling located at Kwangwon-Do. Descriptive statistics, content analysis, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used in performance of data analysis. Results: Through conduct of validity testing, 27 items were finally selected. The internal consistency was acceptable with a Cronbach's alpha of .66 and a Guttman Split-half coefficient of .70. Conclusion: The injury risk perception scale showed adequate validity and reliability in preschool children. It can be used for assessment of injury risk and for development of injury prevention programs for preschool children.
Purpose: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Questionnaire (PCOSQ) was developed to measure health-related quality of life of women who had polycystic ovary syndrome. The purpose of this study was to exam reliability and validity of the Korean version of PCOSQ. Methods: A sample of 101 women who had polycystic ovarian syndrome was recruited from outpatient gynecology clinics. Factor analysis was carried out to verify the composition of dimensions of the Korean version of PCOSQ. Concurrent validity was examined by assessing the correlation between the PCOSQ and health related quality of life, and convergent validity was evaluated by testing correlation between PCOSQ and depression. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's ${\alpha}$. Results: The content validitywas satisfactory (CVI=0.85). Factor analysis identified 5 factors, and factor loadings of the PCOSQ ranged from .48 to .90. Correlation was found between the PCOSQ and health related quality of life (Physical component score: r=.33, p=.001; Mental component score: r=.44, p<.001) and between the PCOSQand depression (r=-.36, p<.001). The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ of the PCOSQ was .93, indicating reliable reliability. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the Korean version of PCOSQ is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating Korean-speaking women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a measurement scale of nursing competence for nurses working in general wards, and to test the validity and reliability of the scale. Method: A methodological study design was used, consisting of 3 steps as conceptual framework decision, measurement items development, and testing of validity and reliability. In order to verify content validity, 16 experts reviewed the concept of each competences and measurement items. The developed measurement items were tested from 301 nurses in one hospital. Factor analysis and item analysis were applied to establish the scale's construct validity and reliability. Result: The final scale consists of nine dimensions with 70 items. The overall scale reliability had a Cronbach's alpha of 0.98, and the demensions Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.88 to 0.95. The factor loading of construct validity was from 0.40 to 0.83. The explained variance from the 9 extracted factors was 70.93% of the total variance, and final factors were labeled as critical thinking, resources management and professional development, ability of ward management, application of nursing process, ethical accountability, respectful consideration, patient centered approach, crisis management, and leadership. Conclusion: This measurement scale can be utilized to evaluate nursing competence for nurses working in general wards.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument that evaluated QUality Of care Through patients' Eyes for hospitalized child (QUOTE-Child), and examine the validity and reliability. Methods: Preliminary items were reviewed through expert content validity and face validity. To test the validity and reliability of the instrument, the data were collected from 221 care givers of hospitalized children. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, Cronbach's alpha and Spearman-Brown coefficient. Results: Factor analysis yielded 19 items in four factors including 1) respect, 2) explanation, 3) kindness, and 4) skillfulness, with a cumulative explanatory variance of 70.68%. For criterion-related validity, a significant positive relationship was found between quality of care and pediatric family satisfaction. For internal consistency reliability, the Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was .93 (importance) and .95 (performance) for the overall instrument. The half split reliabilities were .86, .95 (importance) and .92, .97 (performance). The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ of 110 data was .92 (importance) and .94 (performance). Conclusion: Researchers and practitioners can use this instrument to systematically assess quality of care for hospitalized children and identify areas of support for hospitalized children and their family.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to develope and evaluate a constipation intervention program for inpatients. Method: To develope this program, Six phases were processed including the organization of team, the analysis of medical chart, the development of tentative constipation intervention program, the test of content validity, the test of clinical validity and the determination of final constipation intervention program. To evaluate the clinical validity of this program, 10 subjects who were in the C University Hospital were selected from March, 2001 to October, 2001. Result: The clinical validity was supplied by the pilot test, showing the potential effect of the program. Based on the validity results the final algorithm and the form of nursing record for this program which consist of the 3-step assessments and the intervention protocol were presented in this study. Conclusion: The advantage of this program is being able to assess and manage constipation simultaneously and is especially effective to patients who are at risk for developing constipation during their admission.
