  • Video information is an important component of multimedia systems such as Digital Library, World-Wide Web (WWW), and Video-On-Demand (VOD) service system. Video information has hierarchical document structure inherently, so it is named "structure video document" in this paper. This paper proposes a data model, a query language, and an indexing scheme for structured video documents in order to store, retrieve, and share video documents efficiently. In representing structured video documents, the object-oriented data modeling technique is used since the hierarchical structure information can be modeled as complex objects. We also define object types for the structure information. Our query language supports not only content-based retrieval, which means the queries based on the structure of video documents, and spatial/temporal relation for video documents. In order to perform structure queries efficiently, as well as to reduce the storage overhead of indices, an optimized inverted index structure is proposed.

  • In this paper we present a system that classifies brain MR images by using 2 level decision tree learning. There are two kinds of information that can be obtained from images. One is the low-level features such as size, color, texture, and contour that can be acquired directly from the raw images, and the other is the high-level features such as existence of certain object, spatial relations between different parts that must be obtained through the interpretation of segmented images. Learning and classification should be performed based on the high-level features to classify images according to their semantic meaning. The proposed system applies decision tree learning to each level separately, and the high-level features are synthesized from the results of low-level classification. The experimental results with a set of brain MR images with tumor are discussed. Several experimental results that show the effectiveness of the proposed system are also presented.

  • Digital comic images are one of popular contents on the Internet. Usually, they are scanned from comic books by digital scanners. Without post-processing, they may have different sizes, skews and margins other than contents at the boundary. To normalize the size of their contents without the skews and margins is an important step in comic image analysis and application such as content-based comic image retrieval system. In this paper, we propose a method to detect a box frame in comic images by extracting of line segments using the gradient Radon transform. The box frame in comic images is the maximum rectangle which consists of contents without margins. We use the detected box frame to normalize the size of comic images and to make them no skew. In addition, the proposed method is implemented by OpenCL to speed up the detection of the line segments. Experimental results show that our proposed method effectively detects the box frame in comic images.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct a digital archive system by analyzing the collections of the Korean Christian Museum at S University, which has a large number of materials related to Korean Christianity published in the modern period from the time of Korea's enlightenment until liberation. In order to construct a digital archive system, indexes and metadata for the collection are complied according to the pre-defined format. After digitizing the selected collection, a database is built using metadata information, and the actual system is divided into a web standard-based management system and a user service system. Also a content-based search system is constructed, which provides the matching value of retrieval results in units of one character and an automatic search term completion function to enhance user convenience. Therefore, collections in the museum, which are difficult to access the original text, are digitized and provided so that they can be easily used, laying the foundation for the long-term development of humanities contents for improving the accessibility and availability of collections for both researchers and the public.

  • This paper detected the characteristics of motion vector to support efficient content -based video search of video. Traditionally, the present frame of a video was divided into blocks of equal size and BMA (block matching algorithm) was used, which predicts the motion of each block in the reference frame on the time axis. However, BMA has several restrictions and vectors obtained by BMA are sometimes different from actual motions. To solve this problem, the foil search method was applied but this method is disadvantageous in that it has to make a large volume of calculation. Thus, as an alternative, the present study extracted the Spatio-Temporal characteristics of Motion Vector Spatio-Temporal Correlations (MVSTC). As a result, we could predict motion vectors more accurately using the motion vectors of neighboring blocks. However, because there are multiple reference block vectors, such additional information should be sent to the receiving end. Thus, we need to consider how to predict the motion characteristics of each block and how to define the appropriate scope of search. Based on the proposed algorithm, we examined motion prediction techniques for motion compensation and presented results of applying the techniques.

  • Developing good methods for image description and indexing is fundamental for successful image retrieval, regardless of the content of images. Researchers and practitioners in the field of image indexing have developed a variety of image indexing systems and methods with the consideration of information types delivered by images. Such efforts in developing image indexing systems and methods include Panofsky's levels of image indexing and indexing systems adopting different approaches such as thesauri-based approach, classification approach. description element-based approach, and categorization approach. This study investigated users' perception of the objectiveness of image indexing, especially the iconographical analysis of image information advocated by Panofsky. One of the best examples of subjectiveness and conditional-dependence of image information is emotion. As a result, this study dealt with visual emotional information. Experiments were conducted in two phases : one was to measure the degree of agreement or disagreement about the emotional content of pictures among forty-eight participants and the other was to examine the inter-rater consistency defined as the degree of users' agreement on indexing. The results showed that the experiment participants made fairly subjective interpretation when they were viewing pictures. It was also found that the subjective interpretation made by the participants resulted from the individual differences in terms of their educational or cultural background. The study results emphasize the importance of developing new ways of indexing and/or searching for images, which can alleviate the limitations of access to images due to the subjective interpretation made by different users.

  • In this paper, we propose the comparison method of pattern similarity for video segmentation algorithm. The shot boundary type is categorized as 2 types, abrupt change and gradual change. The representative examples of gradual change are dissolve, fade-in, fade-out or wipe transition. The proposed method consider the problem to detect shot boundary as 2-class problem. We concentrated if the shot boundary event happens or not. It is essential to define similarity between frames for shot boundary detection. We proposed 2 similarity measures, within similarity and between similarity. The within similarity is defined by feature comparison between frames belong to same shot. The between similarity is defined by feature comparison between frames belong to different scene. Finally we calculated the statistical patterns comparison between the within similarity and between similarity. Because this measure is robust to flash light or object movement, our proposed algorithm make contribution towards reducing false positive rate. We employed color histogram and mean of sub-block on frame image as frame feature. We performed the experimental evaluation with video dataset including set of TREC-2001 and TREC-2002. The proposed algorithm shows the performance, 91.84% recall and 86.43% precision in experimental circumstance.

  • In recent Information Environment, various Multimedia contents are getting noticed. But, since these contents have various formats of representation and very wide range of information, it was difficult to retrieve contents that user wanted and to utilize it. To solve these problems, many studies presented draft standards for adding metadata to contents, and then, semantic search for contents had become available. Unfortunately, as the number of metadata standards and contents increased, the lack of interoperability between contents was begun and users are faced with difficulty of search contents again. To improve these problems, this paper supports interoperability between metadata standards and expands the semantic relationship between elements and proposes an ontology which is named TOFIC(The Ontology For Imagery Contents) for enhanced semantic search. In TOFIC, the semantic relationships between MPEG-7 and TV-Anytime are classified, and extended new semantics are defined. As a result, semantic search for multimedia contents is enhanced and it is possible to retrieve most of the multimedia contents that exist on the current information environment consistently. In addition, it supports enhanced content-based search for multimedia contents.

  • Government Information Locator Service(GILS) allows the users to access and utilize government information by including the content description about the resource as well as the secondary information about the resources such as location and access method. The following problems have been identified, while analyzing the electronic government offered GILS to come up with the service improvement plan. Firstly, it was difficult to comprehend the record labels from the user interface point of view. There were errors in the retrieval result screens. Secondly, there were a number of missing items in the records. Thirdly, there was no explicit explanation on how to access the information. Lastly, there were no clearly explained reasons that certain information is non-disclosed or partially disclosed. Thus, it is necessary to deal with the identified problems by improving the information collection method; reorganizing the record items; heavily investing in the public relation activities; and improving the web-based access method if the revitalization of GILS is to be achieved.
