  • Namdae-cheon in Gangwon-do Province, Korea, is a valuable well-preserved lagoon. The estuary of Namdae-cheon Stream is closed because of the surrounding natural sand shoal. Thus, during the dry season, river water cannot easily flow to the ocean and therefore stagnates. River water congestion causes environmental deterioration of estuaries, often by eutrophication. In this study, we examined wall disintegration in the estuary area and used it to determine appropriate measures for the conservation of estuary water quality in the future. A total of 24 sites were selected, with 13 sites on the west side and 11 sites on the east side of the estuary study area. Samples were collected and analyzed for particle size and moisture content both vertically and horizontally. Sedimentary deposition rate was measured, and subsidence analysis was performed. Particle size, water content, sedimentary deposition, and subsidence analyses indicated that flow shifted to the west during the study period. In conjunction with other variables that may affect changes in flow, these parameters can be used in future research to predict shoal breaches and associated changes in water flow direction.

  • A field experiment was conducted with Calliandra calothyrsus of fifteen provenances to evaluate the variation in the condensed tannin content of fresh leaves. Plants were raised in a nursery for three months and planted in the field. Experimental design was line planting of double hedgerows (3 m long plot, 1/2 meter interval, 45 plants in each plot) with 5 replicates. Plants were lopped every 5 months and samples (10 different plants within a plot; 4 newly flushed leaves, 4 partially expanded leaves and 4 mature full expanded leaves from each of 10 trees in a plot) were collected and were put on ice before transfer to the laboratory. Proanthocyanidine was extracted in aqueous acetone, and total extractable proanthcyanidine (TEPA) and total proanthocyanidine (TOPA) were measured. In addition, proximate analyses were made of different provenances. Crude protein contents varied from 19.74% to 16.45%; in vitro organic matter digestibility ranged from 36.09% to 23.32%. TEPA content ranged from 11.22 to 16.01 (measured as absorbance at $550nm,\;g^{-1}$ DM) and TOPA from 24.57 to 31.72 (measured as absorbance at $550nm,\;g^{-1}$ DM) TEPA and TOPA had a positive correlation, whereas crude protein content of Calliandra was negatively correlated with TEPA and TOPA. Provenances, such as Georgesville (Belize), local, Coban (Guatemala), Patulul (Guatemala), Bombana (Mexico) can be selected on the basis of nutritive value of fodder.

  • The effects of the Zn content on the microstructure and corrosion behavior in 1M NaCl solution were investigated in Mg-(0~6)%Zn casting alloys. The MgZn phase was scarcely observed in the Mg-1%Zn alloy, while the Mg-(2~6)%Zn alloy consisted of ${\alpha}$-(Mg) and MgZn phases. With an increase in the Zn content, the amount of the MgZn phase was gradually increased. Immersion and electrochemical corrosion tests indicated that the Mg-1%Zn alloy had the lowest corrosion rate among the alloys, and a further increase in the Zn content resulted in the deterioration of the corrosion resistance. Microstructural examinations of the corroded surfaces and EIS analyses of surface corrosion films revealed that the best corrosion resistance at 1%Zn was associated with the absence of MgZn phase particles in the microstructure and the contribution of Zn element to the formation of a protective film on the surface. A micro-galvanic effect by the MgZn particles led to the increased rate of corrosion at a higher Zn content.

  • We have explored the factors affecting the resistivity of Cu (Mg) alloy, which was prepared by sputtering. The results show that the resistivity is a function of Mg content, annealing temperature, annealing time, and Cu-alloy thickness. Addition of Mg to copper increases the resistivity through solute scattering. In addition, increasing Mg content promotes the interfacial reaction between Mg and SiO$_2$ to produce the free silicon and the generated free silicon dissolves into copper, resulting in a significant increase of resistivity. Furthermore, increasing oxidation temperature rapidly decreases the resistivity at the initial stage of oxidation and then continues to increase the resistivity to the saturation value with increasing oxidation time. The saturation value depends on the residual Mg content and the thickness of the alloy. TEM and AES analyses reveal that dense, uniform MgO grows to the limiting thickness of about $150\AA$. However, interfacial MgO does not show the limiting thickness, instead continues to grow until Mg is completely exhausted. From these facts, we proposed the maximum available Mg content needed to from the dense MgO on the surface and suppress the excessive interfacial reaction.

  • Even through many professional organizations increasingly use Q&A sites in their online communities for information sharing, there are few studies which examine what is really going on in the Q&A activities in professional online communities (POC). This study aims to examine the interaction patterns and contents posted in the Q&A site of a POC, KOSEN, a science and technology online community in South Korea, focusing on how actively scientific information and knowledge are shared. The interaction patterns among the participants were identified through social network analysis (SNA) and the contents in the Q&As were examined by content analysis. The results show that the overall network indicated a moderate level of participation and connection and answerers especially tended to be active. Also, there are different interaction patterns depending on academic fields. Relatively few participants were posting leaders who seemed to steer the overall interactions. Furthermore, some content related to manipulation and explanation for experiments, which are in urgent need, seem to be posted in the sites more frequently with more amounts. Combining both SNA and content analysis, this study demonstrated how actively information and knowledge is shared and what types of contents are exchanged. The findings have practical implications for POC managers and practitioners.

  • Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) seed is widely used as a traditional medicine in countries of Asia. Among many functions of the lotus seed, one interesting activity is its skin protection from the sunlight and scar. In this study, we focused on the skin protective property of lotus seed tea against ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation. Two groups of a hairless mouse model, water as control (water group) and lotus seed tea (LST group), were administrated a fluid drink water for six months. After 6 month of administration, UVB exposure was carried out to both groups for another 3 months. During and after the administration, the skin moisture content and the morphological and histopathological analyses through biopsy were carried out. Prior to UVB irradiation, no significant difference was discovered in the skin moisture content for the water group and LST group (P<0.05). However, drastic changes were observed after the UVB treatment. The LST group showed a clear evidence of skin protection compared to the control group (P<0.05). The moisture content, epidermal and horny layer thickness, and protein carbonyl values all revealed that the intake of the lotus seed tea enhanced protection against UVB exposure. As a result, the long-term intake of the lotus seed tea showed the effect of preventing loss of skin moisture, mitigating the formation of abnormal keratinocytes, and contributing to protein oxidation inhibition.

  • Buckwheat flour was incorporated into steamed breads by adding the flour in the range of 0~9% based on the Baker's percentages and the physicochemical properties and consumer acceptance were investigated. After mixing, kneading, proofing, and molding, bread dough was steamed for 15 min using a steam tray and boiling water. The samples were cooled to room temperature for 15 min and packed in airtight bags for further analyses. pH of the steamed bread decreased slightly while titratable acidity increased significantly from 1.02 to 1.37 mL with the incorporation of more buckwheat flour in the formulation (p<0.05). Water activity was not affected by the buckwheat flour level (p>0.05). Moisture content slightly decreased from 43.72 to 42.30% while soluble solids content increased from 0.63 to 0.85 as the buckwheat flour concentration increased. As a result of the addition of buckwheat flour, the specific volume decreased from 3.31 to 2.57 mL/g; on the other hand, the spread ratio ranged from 2.17 to 2.21 without significant differences among them (p>0.05). At the higher level of buckwheat content, lower scores of all color parameters ($L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$-values) were observed. Firmness increased significantly with an increase in buckwheat flour content (p<0.05). Consumer acceptance tests indicated that incorporation of up to 3% buckwheat flour in the formulation of steamed breads did not significantly influence the consumers' acceptability in all attributes tested, except for color and elasticity.

  • Oxygen incorporated $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ (GST) films were prepared by an ion beam sputtering deposition (IBSD) method. From the I-V curves, the $V_{th}$ value varies with the oxygen content. Ge-deficient hexagonal phases are responsible for the observed unstability and decrease in $V_h$ values. In the case of a GST film with an elevated oxygen content of 30.8 %, the GST layer melted at 9.02 V due to the instability conferred by the high oxygen content. The formation of Ge-deficient hexagonal phases such as $GeSb_2Te_4$ and $Sb_2Te_3$ appear to be responsible for the $V_{th}$ variation. Impedance analyses indicated that the resistance in GST films with oxygen contentsof 16.7 % and 21.7 % had different origins. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS)data indicate that moisture and hydrocarbons were more readily desorbed at higher oxygen content because the oxygen incorporated GST films are more hydrophilic than undoped GST films.

  • Soil moisture content is generally accepted as an important factor to understand the process of crop growth and is the basis of earth system models for analysis and prediction of the crop condition. To continuously monitor soil moisture changes at kilometer scale, it is demanded to create high resolution data from the current, several tens of kilometers. In this paper we described a downscaling method for Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) Soil Moisture Content (SMC) from 10 km to 30 m resolution using a soil texture and field measurements that have a high correlation with the SMC. As a result, the soil moisture variations of both data (before and after downscaling) were identical, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of SMC exhibited the low values. Also, time series analyses showed that three kinds of SMC data (field measurement, original AMSR2, and downscaled AMSR2) had very similar temporal variations. Our method can be applied to downscaling of other soil variables and can contribute to monitoring small-scale changes of soil moisture by providing high resolution data.
