This paper deals with the distribution characteristics of the current density and axial magnetic flux density on the vacuum interrupter with axial magnetic field type using 3 dimension finite element analysis. An axial magnetic field parallel to the current flow in the arc column can improve the current breaking capacity of vacuum interrupter by affecting the arc mode. The axial magnetic flux density on the contact electrode surface is analyzed by inputting external current as a function of the transient time for sine half wave. And it also is analyzed within the gap distance of the contact electrode. The peak value of current but is decreased with the descending current on the contact electrode surface and within the gap distance of the contact electrode. The residual magnetic field is generated on the contact electrode surface and within the gap distance in the instant of zero current, which is due to the influence of eddy currents. The phase shift due to eddy currents, defined as time difference between the maximum value of current and axial magnetic field, is about 1ms in the center point of gap distance.
This paper considers the smooth receding contact problem between a homogeneous half-plane and a composite laminate composed of an inhomogeneously coated elastic layer. The inhomogeneity of the elastic modulus of the coating is approximated by an exponential function along the thickness dimension. The three-component structure is pressed together by either a concentrated force or uniform pressures applied at the top surface of the composite laminate. Both semianalytical and finite element analysis are performed to solve for the extent of contact and the contact pressure. In the semianalytical formulation, Fourier integral transformation of governing equations and boundary conditions leads to a singular integral equation of Cauchy-type, which can be numerically integrated by Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature to a desired degree of accuracy. In the finite element modeling, the functionally graded coating is divided into homogeneous sublayers and the shear modulus of each sublayer is assigned at its lower boundary following the predefined exponential variation. In postprocessing, the stresses of any node belonging to sublayer interfaces are averaged over its surrounding elements. The results obtained from the semianalytical analysis are successfully validated against literature results and those of the finite element modeling. Extensive parametric studies suggest the practicability of optimizing the receding contact peak stress and the extent of contact in multilayered structures by the introduction of functionally graded coatings.
To assess the electrostatic interaction of surfaces at the triple contact line, the electrostatic field is analyzed by using the finite element method. The Helmholtz free energy is used as a functional which should be minimized under an equilibrium condition. The numerical results are compared with the nonlinear analytical solution for a two-dimensional charged interface and linear solution for a wedge shaped geometry, which shows fairly good agreement. The method is applied to the analysis of electrostatic influence on the contact angle on a charged substrate. The excess free energy found to increase drastically as the contact angle approaches to zero. This excess free energy Plays an opposite role to the Primary electrocapillary effect, as the contact angle gets smaller. This enables an alternative explanation for the contact-angle saturation phenomenon occurring in electrical control of surface tension and contact angle.
Rails are subjected to damage from rolling contact fatigue, which leads to defects such as cracks. Rolling contact fatigue damages on the surface of rail such as head check, squats are one of growing problems. Another form of rail surface damage, known as "Ballast imprint" has become apparent. This form of damage is associated with ballast particles becoming trapped between the wheel and the surface of rail. These defects are still one of the key reasons for rail maintenance and replacement. In this study, we have investigated whether the ballast imprint is an initiator of head check type cracks and effect of defect size using Finite element analysis. The FE analysis were used to investigate stresses and strains in subsurface of defects according to variation of defect size. Based on loading cycles obtained from FE analysis, fatigue analysis for each point was carried out.
In this study, in order to investigate a modeling technique of the structure with bolted joints, four kinds of finite element model are introduced; a solid bolt model, a coupled bolt model, a spider bolt model, and no bolt model. All proposed models take account on prestrained effect and contact behavior of flanges to be joined. Among these models, a solid bolt model, which is modeled by using a 3-D solid element and a surface-to-surface contact element between the head/nut and the flange interfaces, has the best accurate responses compared with the experimental results. In addition, coupled bolt model, which couples the degree of freedom between the head/nut and the flange, shows the best effectiveness and usefulness in view of computational time and memory usage. Finally, the bolt model proposed here is adopted for structural analysis of a large diesel engine of a ship consisting of several parts which is connected by long stay bolts.
Pitting wear is a dominant from of polyethylene surface damage in total knee replacements, and may originate from surface cracks that propagate under repeated tribological contact. In this study, stress intensity factors, K$\_$I/and $_{4}$, were calculated for a surface crack in a polyethylene-CoCr-bone system under the rolling and/or sliding contact pressures. Crack length and load location were considered in determination of probable crack propagation mechanisms and fracture modes. Positive K$\_$I/ values were obtained for shorter cracks in rolling contact and for all crack lengths when the sliding load was apart from the crack. $_{4}$ was the greatest when the load was directly adjacent to the crack (g/a=${\pm}$1). Sliding friction caused a substantial increase of both K$\_$I/$\^$max/ and $_{4}$$\^$max/. The effective Mode I stress intensity factors, K$\_$eff/, were the greatest at g/a=${\pm}$1, showing the significance of high shear stresses generated by loads adjacent to surface cracks. Such behavior of K$\_$eff/ suggests mechanisms for surface pitting by which surface cracks may propagate along their original plane under repeated rolling or sliding contact.

In this paper, a new method for calculating capacitance in arbitrarily shape structure is Presented. This new approach based on divergence theorem of Gauss\`s law is acheive by Surface-Contacted Element(SCE) for Gaussian surface. To evaluate accurate capacitance value in nonuniform electric field. in two dimensional analysis the interpolation using the elements which contact one nod (PE: Point-Element) or two nod (FE: Face-Element) is employed. Because the elements contacted with surface are very small compared with total elements in analytic model, SCE method has shorter computing time to calculate capacitance. This proposed method is verified by comparing the simulated results with value obtained by analytic method.
Most automobile tire companies have not yet considered the geometric information of a road at the design stage of a tire because the topographical characterization of a road surface is very difficult owing to its vastness and randomness. A road surface shows variable surface roughness values according to magnification, and thus, the contact force between the road and tire significantly fluctuates with respect to the scale. In this study, we make an attempt to define a representative value for surface topographical information at multi-scale levels. To represent surface topography, we use a statistical method called power spectral density (PSD). We use the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and PSD to analyze the height profiles of a random surface. The FFT and PSD of a surface help in obtaining a fractal dimension, which is a representative value of surface topography at all length scales. We develop three surfaces with different fractal dimensions. We use finite element analysis (FEA) to observe the contact forces between a tire and the road surfaces with three different fractal dimensions. The results from FEA reveal that an increase in the fractal dimension decreases the contact length between the tire and road surfaces. On the contrary, the average contact force increases. This result indicates that designing and manufacturing a tire considering the fractal dimension of a road makes safe driving possible, owing to the improvement in service life and braking performance of the tire.
In general, the sheet metal and die are described by finite elements for the simulation of the metal forming processes. Because the characteristics as continuum of the sheet metal are represented with triangles and rectangles, the errors occur inevitably in finite element analysis. Many contact schemes to describe the deformation modes exactly have been introduced in order to decrease these errors. In this study, a scheme for continuous contact treatment is proposed in order to consider the realistic behavior of contact phenomena during the forming process. The discrete mesh causes stepwise propagation of contact nodes of the sheet even though the contact region of the real forming process is altered very smoothly. It gives rise to convergence problem in case that the process, for example bending process, is sensitive to the contact between the sheet and the tools. The analysis of the unconstrained cylindrical bending process without blank holder is also presented in order to investigate the effect of the proposed algorithm.
