  • Based on the first-principles computations, the nature of the microscopic geometry of the molecule-electrode contacts was addressed. The single-molecule junction was prepared by connecting hexanediothiolate (HDT) to Au(111) electrodes via one, two, and three Au adatoms having coordination number of one (CN1), two (CN2), and, three (CN3), respectively. The contact atomic structure and energy of the stretched Au-HDT-Au junction was observed. The analysis revealed that the contact geometry with lowest coordination number (CN1) is energetically more stable than CN2 and CN3.

  • In this study, we aimed to clarify the wettability and anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaves as a basic study for engineering applications of anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaf surface. To investigate the surface structure of rice leaf, the micro grooves and asperities of rice leaves were analyzed and quantified by scanning electron microscope, Confocal laser scanning microscopy, and stylus profilometer. The analysis of the structure of rice leaf surface confirmed that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions in leaf veins were inclined toward the leaf tip. The static contact angle test showed that the contact angle at the midline vein or leaf vein location where the micropapilla is concentrated is about $20^{\circ}$ higher than the leaf blade position. The contact angles of fresh and dried rice leave were also compared. The dried rice leaves showed a contact angle of about $5^{\circ}$ to $15^{\circ}$ higher than that of fresh leaves, suggesting that the volume of the protrusions decreased as the water was removed, thus reducing the contact area with the droplet. In the contact angle history test the hysteresis in the leaf tip direction was found to be much lower than that in the leaf petiole direction. This results can be explained that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions had a significant effect on the droplet flow characteristics through contact angle hysteresis experiment.

  • Adhesive contact characteristics of torus-shaped bumps were analyzed using the finite element technique considering the adhesive force. Analyses focused on the effect of rim and bump radii on the adhesive contact behavior such as the jump-to-contact behavior, adhesion hysteresis, pull-off forces, contact region and pressure, and surface and subsurface stresses. Analysis results in the absence of adhesive force were also included to examine the effect of adhesive force. The applicability of torus-shaped bumps to the MEMS structure for reduction of friction is discussed.

  • In this paper we investigate (n+1)($n{\geq}3$)-dimensional contact CR-submanifolds M of (n-1) contact CR-dimension in a complete simply connected Sasakian space form of constant ${\phi}$-holomorphic sectional curvature $c{\neq}-3$ which satisfy the condition h(FX, Y)+h(X, FY) = 0 for any vector fields X, Y tangent to M, where h and F denote the second fundamental form and a skew-symmetric endomorphism (defined by (2.3)) acting on tangent space of M, respectively.

  • An analytical method has been developed to estimate the dynamic contact force between wheel and rail when trains are running on rail with vertical irregularities. In this method, the effect of Hertzian deformation at the contact point is considered as a linearized spring and the wheel is considered as an sprung mass. The rail is modelled as a discretely-supported Timoshenko beam, and the periodic structure theory was adopted to obtain the driving-point receptance. As an example, the dynamic contact force for a typical wheel/rail system was analysed by the method developed in this research and the dynamic characteristics of the system was also discussed. It is revealed that discretely-supported Timoshenko beam model should be used instead of the previously used continuously-supported model or discretelysupported Euler beam model, for the frequency range above several hundred hertz.

  • This paper investigates the abnormal noise of polygon mirror scanner motor due to the mechanical contact. In the high speed polygon mirror scanner motor the vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor is one of the main sources of abnormal noise, because structure-borne noise due to the vibration is bigger than aerodynamic noise, especially when the rotating part contacts the stationary parts. This research determines the main harmonics of structure-borne noise by using sound quality evaluation. It also develops an experimental set-up to measure the mechanical contact and vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor simultaneously. This paper also show that mechanical contact between rotating shaft and stationary sleeve is one of the dominant vibration sources of structure-borne noise which cause the abnormal noise of the high speed polygon mirror scanner motor by using the developed experimental set-up.

  • This study is conducted to analyze exact causes of occupational fatalities and results are as follows : 1) The number of fatalities in establislment which employed less than 50 workers is 605(40.1% ). Age of sixties and seventies is occupied by 10 percent with there being old-aged trend. Fatal workers who were employed less than 3 months are 39.5 percent and fatal workers who were employed more than 10 years are 11.9 percent. Safety training is necessary for newly recruited and long employed workers. 2) Accident type is, in sequence, fall from elevation, traffic accident, disease, contact with electric current, and hazardous condition is, in order, inadequate guard, hazardous method or procedure, public hazard, and agency of accident is, in sequence, temporary structure/building/structure, powered transport vehicle, passenger vehicle, hoisting or lifting apparatus, and unsafe act is, in order, driving error, failure to secure or warn. 3) The results of cross-tabulation for hazardous condition and accident type is, in sequence, traffic accident by public hazard, fall from elevation by hazardous method or procedure, fall from elevation as well as contact with elctric current by inadequate guard. • The rigid gas permeable(RGP) contact lens has nearly side effect on the cornea. So that, this lens has used the clinical reflective correction of the eye. This study have used several methods for research the fine internal structure on the RGP contact lens by scanning electron microscopy. The results have indicated that the postfixation of 1% $OsO_4$ and tannic acid is responsible for a fine structure in the internal plane of RGP contact lens. These internal surface of contact lens appeared the several shape of the hole of the stereo shape form with arrangement of round form. But, on the contact lens with non-postfixation, the stereo shape have not present and the boundary of the vesicle have not clear. Maybe, these results suggest that the fixation methods have effect on the morphological characters of materials on the RGP contact lens.

  • Nuclear power generation is very dangerous in occasion that skirt of structure by earthquake although it is high effective generation that can make a lot of energies with few raw material. when design, it must consider a lot of problems caused by an earthquake. The seismic analysis of the structure has been great concern in the engineering society with an effort to reduce the severe damages from an earthquake. So the earthquake resistant design is one of the crucial design procedures of a gate valve used in nuclear power generation. The gate valve which has the contact area between stem and bellows. Because of the contact area. The gate valve should be given high stress and frictional wear. In this thesis, Considering the gate valve which has some contact distance between stem and bellows. The gate valve which has some contact distance is analyzed by a commercial FEM code of Ansys and Then compared to the gate valve behavior which doesn't have contact distance.
