  • Despite the abundance of research on alcoholic-beverage consumption in the food and beverage marketing literature, research directly assessing and comparing consumers' psychological motives for drinking different types of alcoholic beverages is relatively limited. There is also a paucity of research comparing drink-type specific consumption motivations in an Asian market. Paying attention to some recent new changes in the alcoholic-beverages market of South Korea, this study investigated South Korean young adult female consumers' alcoholic-beverage type-specific drinking motives. A self-administered online survey of 340 young adult female drinkers about their alcohol-consumption patterns, alcoholic-drink preferences, involvement with alcohol, and four types of drinking motives (coping, social, conformity, and enhancement motives) revealed differences in: (1) the association between the consumer's alcohol involvement level, alcohol consumption frequency/amount, and preferences for alcoholic beverages across different types of alcoholic drinks; (2) the underlying psychological motives for drinking different types of alcoholic beverages; (3) the association between consumption contexts and alcoholic drink types; and (4) the consumption patterns and drinking motives across different consumer groups that are segmented in terms of their most preferred type of alcoholic beverages. These findings point to the importance of investigating drink-type-specific consumption motivations in alcoholic-beverage consumption research. Limitations and implications for future research are also discussed.

  • Collaborative filtering is a popular technique used for the recommendation system, but its performance, especially the accuracy of recommendation, depends on how to define the reference group. This paper proposes a new contents recommendation scheme based on collaborative filtering technique whose reference groups are created by consumer's affection and consumption type in order to improve the accuracy of recommendation. In this paper, joy, sadness, anger, happiness, and relax are considered as the consumer's affection. And, low-utility / low-pleasure, low-utility / high-pleasure, high-utility / low-pleasure, and high-utility / high-pleasure are considered as the consumer's shopping types. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves the accuracy of recommendation compared to the recommendation scheme considering neither consumer's affection nor consumption type.

  • This study examined the effects of considered attributes when purchase on consumption attitudes and consumption happiness as well as compared the effects for sensible consumption and sentimental consumption. Data was collected from 373 consumers in 20s and 30s from November 15th to 20th in 2017. IBM SPSS 25.0 was used for basic statistical analyses and for paired t-tests, and lavaan 0.6-3 package and semTools package in R 3.3.3(2017-03-06) was used for structural equation modeling. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, there were almost no differences in product types between sentimental consumption and sensible consumption. Second, consumption attitudes toward sensible consumption were more positive than sensible consumption; however consumption happiness from sentimental consumption was higher than from sensible consumption. Third, considered attributes when making purchases were divided into subjective, objective, and symbolic with the effects of these attributes on consumption attitudes and consumption happiness analyzed by structural equation modeling. Regardless of sentimental or sensible consumption, objective selection attributes have a positive effect on consumption attitude, but subjective selection attributes have a positive effect on consumption happiness. This study implies that sentimental consumption has a positive value for contemporary consumers and that it should be counted as a feasible consumption activity to enhance consumption happiness.
