  • Underground building constructions are recently more important because the ratio of underground area is increasing in the huge and high-rise building construction projects. For reducing the total building construction periods, it is required to reduce not only the over-ground structural work periods but also the underground structural work periods. Therefore, this study is proposed the non-supporting system forms for single face walls in underground building construction by one of the methods for reducing the underground structural work periods and investigated the applicability of the non-supporting system forms by analyzing the case-study in civil construction project. In regard of construction duration, the results of analyzing the case-study showed that the non-supporting system forms are better than the euro forms with soldier system for single face walls in underground building construction. In addition, it is showed that the cost of these two forms is similar and usage the working space and safety in non-supporting system forms are better that those of the euro forms with soldier system, too.

  • This study compares the periods of cold weather concrete determined by the codes regulated by KCI (Korean Concrete Institute) and AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan). For the calculation of the periods of cold weather concrete, the climate data for last 5 years obtained from Korean weather forecast station is used. Calculated data indicated that the period of cold weather concrete by AIJ code is longer than that by KCI code. Although global warming causes the decrease of the period of winter season, the temperature differences are large in Korea. Therefore, it is required that the current KCI code should be accordingly upgraded to reflect the weather variation in Korea over time.

  • This study evaluated wind loads considering a local basic wind velocity and construction periods to define the level of applied wind loads for system supports. Structural responses of system supports were examined and compared to those of system supports with the level of wind loads following various standards and specifications for permanent and temporary structures. And, the maximum combined stress ratios were estimated to evaluate the structural safety of a considered system support. From results, it was found that the wind load level should be applied in accordance with construction periods when estimating the safety of system supports. Looking into the response by change of the basic wind velocity according to local regions, it is no need to consider wind loads in regions with the basic wind velocity of 30 m/s. However, it was analyzed that wind loads should be considered in the regions with the basic wind velocity of 40 m/s or above. In addition, wind loads should be considered in designing system supports located at the region with the basic wind velocity of 35 m/s starting from construction period of 1.5 years. The standard specification for temporary work was analyzed as an incorrect standard in evaluating wind loads, since it underestimated the response of system supports in accordance with the local basic wind velocity and construction periods.

  • Wind-induced motions, like acceleration for instance, often influence designs for high-rise buildings. As a consequence, correct assessment of natural frequency becomes important. The empirical expressions used to quantify this parameter at the design phase tend to yield values that are significantly different from each other. This paper is concerned with the natural periods of steel buildings. It describes the vibration measurement methods that were employed for testing buildings. This paper will also present reliable methods of assessing the natural period from ambient vibration tests. Data from measurements on 21 buildings in Seoul were provided while 21 buildings were tested by ambient vibration measurements to obtain the natural periods. While regression formulas of natural periods for steel-frarried tall buildings were suggested, the obtained formula was compared with the empirical expressions of structural standards and the Eigen-value analysis.

  • Domestic construction companies suffer from the difficulty in financing in the wake of economic slump at home and abroad. In the periods of this economic slump, which hit the nation REITs, the facilitator of fluid financing and the stimulating of construction economic, has increasingly been expanded since its introduction in 2001. But, REITs relatively falls behinds any other nations, in terms of its growth speed and marketing volume. The purpose of this research thesis is to suggest the method for composing a portfolio using Markowitz portfolio selection models for stimulating REITs. Main contents are as follows. First, the thesis made the comparative analysis on profit increase in REITs investment in application of models by Markowitz and REITs derivatives from 2007/07/03 to 2008/07/21 during investment analysis periods. The result showed that total profits by Markowitz model amounted to about 10 percent higher than average profits of REITs derivatives. Second, this thesis made the analysis on sensitivity of data-gathering and portfolio change periods of the existing profits, in order to measure the both periods and yield optimum profits. The six month data-collecting periods of profits accounted for some 16% higher profits than profits of REITs derivatives. In case when the two week periods of portfolio change accounted for some 11% higher profits than profits of REITs derivatives.

  • After the new standards for labor hours has been released, various problems come up in construction field, such as income reduction of employees, extension of construction period and increased construction cost. Although it is expected that the impact of the new standard on the construction industry is more worse than other industries form the view of productivity, not much works have been done to identify those impacts. Thus, this research proposes the standard construction processes, excavation cycle, and unit construction period for NATM tunnel project based on 'Construction Standard Production Rates.'The study also investigated the impact of reduced labor hours on the management of work crews, construction periods and costs of tunnel projects. The results showed that under the 52 labor hour standard, the construction periods for the excavation work and whole project was increased by 20% and 8.9%, respectively, but the construction costs for the excavation work and whole project was decreased by 1.4% and 0.6%, respectively.

  • This study investigates the performance of advanced hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge column sections with triangular reinforcement details. Hollow column sections are based on economic considerations of cost savings associated with reduced material and design moments, as against increased construction complexity, and hence increased labor costs. The proposed innovative reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational, and facilitate shorter construction periods. We tested a model of advanced hollow column sections under quasi-static monotonic loading. The results showed that the proposed triangular reinforcement details were equal to the existing reinforcement details, in terms of the required performance. We used a computer program, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology (RCAHEST), for analysis of the RC structures; and adopted a modified lateral confining effect model for the advanced hollow bridge column sections. Our study documents the testing of hollow RC bridge column sections with innovative reinforcement details, and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings. Additional full-scale experimental research is needed to refine and confirm the design details, especially for the actual detailing employed in the field.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the design comparison of totally prefabricated bridge substructure system. Prefabricated bridge substructure systems are a relatively new and versatile alternative in substructure design that can offer numerous benefits. The system can reduce the work load at a construction site and can result in shorter construction periods. The prefabricated bridge substructures are designed by the methods of Korea Highway Bridge Code (KHBD) and load and resistance factor design (AASHTO-LRFD). For the design, the KHBD with DB-24 and DL-24 live loads is used. This study evaluates the design method of KHBD (2005) and AASHTO-LRFD (2007) for totally prefabricated bridge substructure systems. The computer program, reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. A bonded tendon element is used based on the finite element method, and can represent the interaction between the tendon and concrete of a prestressed concrete member. A joint element is used in order to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. This study documents the design comparison of totally prefabricated bridge substructure and presents conclusions and design recommendations based on the analytical findings.

  • Today freeway is experiencing a severe congestion with incoming or outgoing traffic through freeway ramps during the peak periods. Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify the traffic characteristics, analyze the relationships between the traffic characteristics and finally construct the delay predictive models on the rap junctions of freeway with 70mph speed limit. From the traffic analyses, and model construction and verification for delay prediction on the ramp junctions of freeway, the following results were obtained : ⅰ) Traffic flow showed a big difference depending on the time periods. Especially, more traffic flows were concentrated on the freeway junctions in the morning peak period. ⅱ) The occupancy also showed a big difference depending on the time periods, and the downstream occupancy(Od) was especially shown to have a higher explanatory power for the delay predictive model construction on the ramp junctions of freeway. ⅲ) The delay-occupancy curve showed a remarkable shift based on the occupancies observed : O$\_$d/〈9% and O$\_$d/$\geq$9%. Especially, volume and occupancy were shown to be highly explanatory for delay prediction on the ramp junctions of freeway under O$\_$d/$\geq$9%, but lowly for delay prediction on the ramp junctions of freeway under O$\_$d/〈9%. Rather, the driver characteristics or transportation conditions around the freeway were thought to be a little higher explanatory for the delay prediction under O$\_$d/〈9%. ⅳ) Integrated delay predictive models showed a higher explanatory power in the morning peak period, but a lower explanatory power in the non-peak periods.
