A method to derive the constitutive relations of a piezoelectric bender actuator is developed here. The constitutive relations are derived from the geometry, material properties of the actuator. The very complicated constitutive relations can be easily calculated by use of symbolic function in Mathematica. The developed program can calculate the constitutive relations for the unimorph bender made by attaching a short piezoelectric beam on a longer metal beam. The program can also calculate the constitutive relations of a piezoelectric bender with spring at its end.
Today, the modeling of concrete as a material within finite element simulations is predominantly done through nonlinear material models of concrete. In current sophisticated computational systems, there are a number of complex concrete material models which are based on theory of plasticity, damage mechanics, linear or nonlinear fracture mechanics or combinations of those theories. These models often include very complex constitutive relations which are suitable for the modeling of practically any continuum mechanics tasks. However, the usability of these models is very often limited by their parameters, whose values must be defined for the proper realization of appropriate constitutive relations. Determination of the material parameter values is very complicated in most material models. This is mainly due to the non-physical nature of most parameters, and also the large number of them that are frequently involved. In such cases, the designer cannot make practical use of the models without having to employ the complex inverse parameter identification process. In continuum mechanics, however, there are also constitutive relations that require the definition of a relatively small number of parameters which are predominantly of a physical nature and which describe the behavior of concrete very well within a particular task. This paper presents an example of such constitutive relations which have the potential for implementation and application in finite element systems. Specifically, constitutive relations for modeling the plane stress state of concrete are presented and subsequently tested and evaluated in this paper. The relations are based on the incremental theory of elastic strain-hardening plasticity in which a non-associated flow rule is used. The calculation result for the case of concrete under uniaxial compression is compared with the experimental data for the purpose of the validation of the constitutive relations used.
Nuclear thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes have been developed to simulate nuclear reactor systems, which solve simplified governing equations by replacing source terms with constitutive relations for simulating entire reactor systems with low computational resources. For half a century, many efforts have been made for wider versatility and higher accuracy of system codes, but various factors can affect the code analysis results, and it was difficult to isolate these factors and interpret them individually. In this study, two system codes, RELAP5 and TRACE, which have many users and are highly reliable, are selected to analyze only the effects of constitutive relations. The influence of constitutive relations is analyzed using in-house platforms that replicate constitute relations of RELAP5 and TRACE equally to exclude factors that may affect analysis results, such as governing equation solvers and user effects. Among the various constitutive relations, the analysis is performed on the wall variables expected to have the most influence on the analysis results. Part 1 paper presents the methodology and wall friction model comparison, while Part 2 paper shows wall heat transfer comparison of the two selected codes.
Most studies of failure analysis in ductile metals have been based on the classical plasticity theory using the local constitutive relations. These frequently yields a physically unrealistic solution, in which a numerical prediction of the onset of a deformation localization shows an inherent mesh-size sensitivity. A one way to remedy the spurious mesh sensitivity resulted in the unreasonable results is to incorporate the non-local plasticity into the simulation model, which introduce an internal (material) length-scale parameter into the classical constitutive relations. In this paper, a non-local version of the modified Gurson constitutive relation has been introduced into the finite element formulation of the simulation for plane strain compression of the visco elastic-plastic void material. By introducing the non-local constitutive relations we could successfully removed the inherent mesh-size sensitivity for the prediction of the deformation localization. The effects of non-local constitutive relation are discussed in terms of the load-stroke curve and the strain distributions accross the shear band.
In this article, the constitutive relations of three types of piezoelectric benders, which are a unimorph bender, a bimorph bender and a triple-layer bender, are derived based on the beam theory under the quasi-static equilibrium condition. The relation coefficients are described as the geometry and material properties of the benders. More general constitutive relations involving fixed-free, fixed-roll, and fixed-simply supported boundary conditions under the inconsistent length condition between the piezoelectric layer and the nonpiezoelectric one are discussed. The complicated constitutive relations can be easily calculated and checked by using the symbolic function in ‘Mathematica’. The relation coefficients for the benders are plotted in three dimensional graph using the developed program.
A mathematical model which can simulate biaxial moment-curvature relations for reinforced concrete column is developed. The developed model is capable of tracing the post-peak behavior of a column after peak load. The model can take into account different sectional shapes of a column and various constitutive models of confined concrete. The developed model is used to evaluate constitutive models of confined concrete under concentric loading, suggested by different researchers. Error function which measures the overall constitutive behavior of a confined concrete is intrcduced. The constitutive model minimizing this error function is selected and is incorporated into the developed model in order to investigate the effect of main parameters on the general column behavior.
Nuclear thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes have been developed to comprehensively model nuclear reactor systems to evaluate the safety of a nuclear reactor system. For analyzing complex systems with finite computational resources, system codes usually solve simplified fluid equations for coarsely discretized control volumes with one-dimensional assumptions and replace source terms in the governing equations with constitutive relations. Wall boiling heat transfer models are regarded as essential models in nuclear safety evaluation among many constitutive relations. The wall boiling heat transfer models of two widely used nuclear system codes, RELAP5 and TRACE, are analyzed in this study. It is first described how wall heat transfer models are composed in the two codes. By utilizing the same method described in Part 1 paper, heat fluxes from the two codes are compared under the same thermal-hydraulic conditions. The significant factors for the differences are identified as well as at which conditions the non-negligible difference occurs. Steady-state simulations with both codes are also conducted to confirm how the difference in wall heat transfer models impacts the simulation results.
The constitutive relation is an important factor in analysis of confined concrete in composite structures. In order to propose a constitutive model for nonlinear analysis of confined concrete, lateral restraint mechanism of confined concrete is firstly analyze to study the generalities. As the foundation of the constitutive model, peak stress and peak strain is the first step in research. According to the generalities and the Twin Shear Unified Strength Theory, a novel unified equation for peak stress and peak strain are established. It is well coincident with experimental results. Based on the general constitutive relations and the unified equation for peak stress and peak strain, we propose a unified and convenient constitutive model for confined concrete with fewer material parameters. Two examples involved with steel tube confined concrete and hoop-confined concrete are considered. The proposed constitutive model coincides well with the experimental results. This constitutive model can also be extended for nonlinear analysis to other types of confined concrete.
In the present work, a linear static analysis is presented for thin-walled prismatic box-beams made of generally anisotropic materials. A mixed beam theory has been used to model and carry out the analysis. Three different constitutive relations are assessed into the beam formulation. Simple layup cases having symmetric or anti-symmetric configuration have been chosen and tested to clearly show the effects of elastic couplings of the beam. Both 2D and 3D finite element structural analysis using the MSC/NASTRAN has been performed to validate the current analytical results. Results show that appropriate assumptions for the constitutive equations are important and prerequisite for the accurate prediction of beam stiffness constants and also for the beam behavior.
Generally, the structural material shows rate dependent behaviors, which require to constitute different strain-stress relations according to strain rates. Conventional rate- independent constitutive equations used in general purpose finite analysis programs are inadequate for dynamic finite strain problems. In this paper, a rate dependent constitutive equation for elastic-plastic material was developed. The plastic stretch rate was modeled based on slip model with dislocation velocity and density so that there is no yielding condition, and no loading conditions. Non-linear hardening rule was also introduced for finite strain. Material constants of present constitutive equation were determined by experimental data of mild steel. The constitutive equation was applied to uniaxile tension. It was appeared that the present constitutive equation well simulates rate dependent behaviors of mild steel.
