  • I n this paper, an experimental research was carried out to investigate the confinement effect of spiral reinforcements in concrete column specimens subjected to t.he concentric axial corn pressive loads. Main variables were the compressive strengths of concrete of 27.2, 62.4 and 81.2 MPa, and the spacings of spirals of 120, 60, 40, 30, 25 and 20mm. and the yield strengths of spir als of 451 and 1375MPa, respectively. For the same volumetric ratio and yield strength of spir als, it was shown that the strength increment of confined concrete was almost same regardless of the strength of unconfined concrete, however, the axial stram at maximum stress was decreas ed with increasing of the compressive strength of unconfined concrete.

  • The paper presents an experimental study of the structural behavior of circular flyash-concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns under axial compressive loads. In this study, 90% and 100% by weight of the cement in the concrete core was replaced with flyash. Twenty-seven specimens were tested to study the influence of flyash content, wall thickness of the steel tube, and curing age on the ultimate capacity and confinement effect. The experimental results were compared with the design values calculated using AISC-LRFD (1999), ACI (1999), AIJ (1997) and Eurocode 4 (1994). From the experimental study, it was determined that the confinement effect of circular steel tubes filled with high content flyash concrete was better than that of specimens filled with ordinary Portland cement concrete. The 5.88-mm-thick steel tube filled with 100% flyash concrete was equivalent in strength to a steel tube filled with C30 concrete at 28 days.

  • In the present study, a Finite Element Model has been developed and used to study the effect of diameter to wall thickness ratio (D/t) of steel tube filled with concrete under axial loading on its behavior and load carrying capacity. The model is verified by comparing its findings with available experimental results. Influence of thickness and area of steel tube on strength, ductility, confinement and failure mode shapes has been studied. Strength enhancement factors, load factor, confinement contribution, percentage of steel and ductility index are defined and introduced for the assessment. A parametric study by varying length and thickness of tube has been carried out. Diameter of tube kept constant and equals to 140 mm while thickness has been varied between 1 mm and 6 mm. Equations were developed to find out the ultimate load and confined concrete strength of concrete. Variation of lateral confining pressure along the length of concrete cylinder was obtained and found that it varies along the length. The increase in length of tubes has a minimal effect on strength of tube but it affects the failure mode shapes. The findings indicate that optimum use of materials can be achieved by deciding the thickness of steel tube. A better ductility index can be obtained with the use of higher thickness of tube.

  • Researches on the steel-concrete composite girder filled with plain concrete have been being actively performed on the grounds that this type of girder has constructional, structural and aesthetical benefits. As a part of studies on the characteristics of inner shear connections in the concrete-filled steel-concrete composite girder with plain concrete, the confinement effect on the stiffness of inner shear connections was examined in this study. In the case of concrete-filled steel-concrete composite girder, it can be expected that the stiffness of shear connections may be increased in comparison with the case not confined. Therefore, the experimental studies were performed with the confinement effect as a parameter, and the results are discussed in this paper.

  • Nowadays various studies related with superstructure of bridges are developed and they pursuit more effective section of bridges superstructure, material and economical application of composite materials. CFT structure(Concrete Filled Steel Tubular Structure) is developed type of composite structure that concrete is filled with steel box, and the deformation of the member, stiffness and internal force will be improved by confinement effect of steel box and concrete. This paper introduces new type of girder, CFTA girder( Concrete- Filled and Tied Steel Tubular Arch Girder) which is combined with traditional CFT structure, arch effect and prestress through carrying out the structural analysis by computer programs. The computer programs which is used are ABAQCS and MIDAS, and the 12.2m girder which is applied same load and prestresses is analyzed and compared the results respectively.

  • Systematic studies for the effect of the linewidth enhancement factor, the confinement factor, the internal loss and the cavity length on the single mode gain difference and the frequency detuning are performed for $\lambda$/4 phase shifted DFB lasers above threshold. The above threshold characteristics are mainly determined by the linewidth enhancement factor, not by the confinement factor or the parameter defined by the product of the linewidth enhancement factor and the confinement factor. The normalized internal loss defined by the product of the internal loss and the cavity length mainly determines the above threshold characteristics compared to that of the internal loss or the cavity length alone. The effect of the cavity length on threshold characteristics is larger than that of the internal loss in the case of the same normalized internal loss. The above threshold characteristics of quantum well lasers are more resistant to the variations of the confinement factor and the normalized internal loss than those of bulk lasers due to the small linewidth enhancement factor.

  • In this study, an assessment method was proposed to evaluate the pullout resistance between geosynthetic and backill soil by using a stress-strain relationship of the orthotropic composite material subjected to both longitudinal and vertical loadings. For this analysis friction characteristics of geosynthetic-soil and stress-strain relationships subjected to soil confined pressure were investigated by performing the laboratory pullout tests for three types of geosynthetics and performing the confined extension tests far seven types of geosynthetics having geotextiles, composite geosynthetics and geogrids. A comparison was made between unconfined an confined moduli far each geosynthetic material to quantify the soil confinement effect on stress-strain properties. A comparison was also made between the relative increase of moduli at the same strain level among the seven geosynthetic materials to demonstrate the different responses of these geosynthetic materials under soil confinement. Based on the proposed procedure, it was shown that values of the increased tensile force are applicable fur the evaluation of friction strengths between five types of geosynthetics and sands in light of the soil confinement effect.

  • The prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires partial confinement utilization under eccentric loading. This is attributed to the reduction in compression zone compared to columns under pure axial compression. Modern codes and standards are introducing the need to perform extreme event analysis under static loads. There has been a number of studies that focused on the analysis and testing of concentric columns. On the other hand, the augmentation of compressive strength due to partial confinement has not been treated before. The higher eccentricity causes smaller confined concrete region in compression yielding smaller increase in strength of concrete. Accordingly, the ultimate eccentric confined strength is gradually reduced from the fully confined value $f_{cc}$ (at zero eccentricity) to the unconfined value $f^{\prime}_c$ (at infinite eccentricity) as a function of the ratio of compression area to total area of each eccentricity. This approach is used to implement an adaptive Mander model for analyzing eccentrically loaded columns. Generalization of the 3D moment of area approach is implemented based on proportional loading, fiber model and the secant stiffness approach, in an incremental-iterative numerical procedure to achieve the equilibrium path of $P-{\varepsilon}$ and $M-{\varphi}$ response up to failure. This numerical analysis is adapted to assess the confining effect in rectangular columns confined with conventional lateral steel. This analysis is validated against experimental data found in the literature showing good correlation to the partial confinement model while rendering the full confinement treatment unsafe.

  • This paper presents the results of fire resistance properties of high performance concrete varying with fiber kinds and the size of metal lath in order to verify the validities of fiber on the spatting resistance by fire. Metal lath, glass fiber and carbon fiber are used to confine the concrete. According to test results, plain concrete without lateral confinement and confined concrete with glass fiber and carbon fiber show entire failure after exposed to fire, while confined concrete with metal lath take place in the form of slight surface spatting by fire, which has favorable spatting resistance of concrete. As for the effect of the size of metal lath, when the size of metal lath is more than 1.2mm of thickness, the residual strength of concrete exposed to fire maintains more than 80% of its original strength. However, glass fiber and carbon fiber does not perform desirable spatting resistance by fire due to loss of lateral confinement of fiber exposed to fire caused by melting of fiber and reducing bond strength between concrete and fiber.

  • The planar laminar impingement jet with a confinement plate has been studied numerically. Discretzing the convection term with the QUICKER scheme, the full Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow were solved using the well known SIMPLER algorithm. The flow characteristics with Reynolds number and jet exit velocity profile effects on it were considered for H=3, Re=200 - 2000. Results show that vortical flow forms in turn along the confinement and impingement plates as the Reynolds number increases and such a complicated flow pattern has never been reported prior. The jet exit velocity profile is shown to do an important role in determining the position of vortex flow and its size as well as in stagnation and wall jet flow region. Parabolic jet exit profile results in peak of skin friction 1.4-1.6 times greater than that of uniform profile. The channel height effects are also studied and shown to have an effect on flow pattern similar to that of Reynolds number. Also shown is that effects of the jet exit velocity profile becomes less significant over a certain channel height.
