This study proposed a new type of concrete column that was confined with both steel angles and spiral hoops, named angle-steel and spiral confined concrete (ASCC) column. A total of 22 ASCC stub columns were tested under axial compression to investigate their behavior. For a comparison, three angle-steel reinforced concrete (ARC) stub columns were also tested. The test results indicated that ASCC column had a superior mechanical performance. The strength, ductility and energy absorption were considerably increased due to the improvement of confinement from spiral hoops. The confinement behavior and failure mechanism of ASCC column were investigated by the analysis of failure mode, load-deformation curve and section-strain distribution. Parametric studies were carried out to examine the influences of different parameters on the axial compression behavior of ASCC columns. A calculation approach was developed to predict the ultimate load carrying capacity of ASCC columns under axial compression. It was validated that the predicted results were in well agreement with the experimental results.

Existing research on confined concrete filled steel tubular (CCFT) columns has been mainly focused on static or cyclic loading. In this paper, square section CCFT and CFT columns were tested under both static and impact loading, using a 10,000 kN capacity compression test machine and a drop weight testing equipment. Research parameters included bonded and unbonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wraps, with carbon, basalt and glass FRPs (or CFRP, BFRP, and GFRP), respectively. Time history curves for impact force and steel strain observed are discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the failure modes of specimens under impact testing were characterized by local buckling of the steel tube and cracking at the corners, for both CCFT and CFT columns, similar to those under static loading. For both static and impact loading, the FRP wraps could improve the behavior and increase the loading capacity. To analyze the dynamic behavior of the composite columns, a finite element, FE, model was established in LS-DYNA. A simplified method that is compared favorably with test results is also proposed to predict the impact load capacity of square CCFT columns.
Concrete columns confined with high-strength fiber composites can enhance its strength as well as maximum strain. In recent years, several equations have been developed to predict the behavior of the concrete columns confined with fiber composites. While the developed equations can predict the compressive strength of the confined columns with reasonable agreement, these equations are not successful in predicting the observed maximum strain of the columns. In this paper, a total of 61 test results is analysed to propose an equation to predict both compressive strength and maximum strain of concrete cylinders. The proposed equation takes into account the effects of confining pressure and cylinder size. Furthermore, in order to verify the proposed stress-strain curve for concrete cylinders, six cylindrical specimens were tested. Comparisons between the observed and calculated stress-strain curves of the tested cylinders showed reasonable agreement.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse reinforcement in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns(260$\times$260$\times$1200 mm) were tested. Effects of main variables such as the concrete compressive strength, the tie configuration, the transverse reinforcement ratio, the tie spacing, and the spatting of the concrete cover were considered. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse reinforcement that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure There is a consistent decrease in deformability of column specimen with increasing concrete strength. Test results were compared with the previous confinement model such as modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi model. The comparison indicates that many previous models for confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.

The stress-strain curve of concrete confined with both lateral ties and carbon fiber sheet(CFS) is different to that of concrete confined with only lateral ties or CFS. The objective of this study is to investigate the stress-strain relation of reinforced concrete columns confined by composite material. The main variable of the specimens was the content rate of lateral ties to CFS. In the test a total 24 rectangular specimens, which are all 148$\times$148$\times$300mm size. The test results indicated that while the compressive strength of specimens confined with both lateral ties and CFS increased proportionally to the aided amount of two materials, the maximum strain of specimens depended on the larger strain of lateral ties or CFS.
The inelastic behavior of a reinforced concrete columns is influenced by a number of factors : 1) level of axial load, 2) tie spacing, 3) volumetric ratio of lateral steel, 4) concrete strength, 5) distribution of longitudinal steel, 6) strength of lateral steel, 7) cover thickness, 8) configuration of lateral steel, 9) strain gradient, 10) strain rate, 11) the effectively confined concrete core area, and 12) amount of longitudinal steel. A new constitutive model of a confined concrete is suggested in order to investigate the nonlinear behavior of the reinforced concrete columns under concentric loading. The developed constitutive model for the confined concrete takes into account the effects of effectively confined area as well as the horizontal and longitudinal distributions of the confining pressures. None of the existing models incorporated these two main effects at the same time. A total of different six constitutive models for the behavior of the confined concrete under concentric compression were compared with the sixty-one test results reported by different researchers. The superiority of the developed model in its accuracy is demonstrated by evaluating the error function, which compares the weighted averages for the sum of squared relative differences in peak compressive strength and corresponding strain, stress at strain equal to 0.015, and total area under stress-strain curve up to strain equal to 0.015.
Numerical studies are performed to predict the stress-strain behavior of rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops under axial and eccentric compressions. Using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS, the Drucker-Prager criterion and the yield surface are adopted for damaged plasticity concrete. The proposed finite element models are compared with the published experimental data. Parametric studies on concrete grades, confinement arrangement, diameter and spacing of hoops and eccentricity of load are followed. Numerical results have shown good agreements with experimental values, and indicated a proper constitutive law and model for concrete. Cross-sectional areas and spacing of the hoops have significant effect on the bearing capacity. It can be concluded that rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops show better performance than the conventional ones.

This study investigated the behavior of R/C column confined with headed crossties subjected to eccentric loading. The 16 specimens are designed to have adequate confinement steel, determined by ACI seismic design. The variables studied in this research test are eccentricity to depth ratios, spacing of lateral steel and the anchor type of end of crossties. From the test results, all columns showed similar behavior up to the peak load but those columns laterally confined with head presented more ductile behavior after the peak load. The comparisons indicate that the flexural behavior of confined-concrete columns can be computed resonable accurately by P-M interaction curve.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the stress-strain behavior of confined concrete columns according to transverse reinforcement volumetric ratio. Uniaxial loading tests of eleven column specimens$(250\times100\times500mm)$ with rectangular section were conducted to study effect of confinement. The main variables in this test are transverse reinforcement volumetric ratio and cross tie arrangement. the results indicate that the strength and the ductility of confined concrete columns are subjected to transverse reinforcement volumetric ration and cross tie arrangement.
This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate the mechanical behavior of partially encased composite columns confined by CFRP under axial compression. The results show that the failure of the partially encased composite columns confined by CFRP occurred due to rupture of the CFRP followed by local buckling of the steel flanges. External wrapping of CFRP effectively delayed the local buckling of the steel flanges. The load carrying capacity of the column increased with the application of CFRP sheet. And the enhancement effect of the column was increased with the number of CFRP layer.
