This study presents the fracture properties of nano modified medium strength concrete (MSC). The nano particle used in this study is nano silica which replaces cement about 1 and 2% by weight, and the micro steel fibers are added about 0.4% volume of concrete. In addition to fracture properties, mechanical properties, namely, compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength of nano modified MSC are studied. To ensure the durability of the MSC, durability studies such as rapid chloride penetration test, sorptivity test, and water absorption test have been carried out for the nano modified MSC. From the study, it is observed that significant performance improvement in nano modified MSC in terms of strength and durability which could be attributed due to the addition pozzolanic reaction and the filler effect of nano silica. The incorporation of nano silica increases the fracture energy about 30% for mix without nano silica. Also, size independent fracture energy is arrived using two popular methods, namely, RILEM work of fracture method with $P-{\delta}$ tail correction and boundary effect method. Both the methods resulted in nearly the same size-independent $G_F$ irrespective of the notch to depth ratio of the same specimen. This shows evidence that either of the two procedures could be used in practice for analysis of cracked concrete structures.
This study presented the experimental results on the durability properties of recycled aggregate concrete incorporating fly ash. The main experimental variables were the substitution ratio of recycled aggregate and fly ash, where the substitution ratios of recycled aggregate were 0, 30, and 50%, and those of fly ash were 0, 10, 20, and 30%. The tests for evaluating compressive strength, freezing-thawing resistance, and drying shrinkage were conducted for each specimen. As a result, the compressive strength and the durability of the recycled aggregate concrete were compared from those of ordinary concrete. The followings were conclusion; The compressive strengths of recycled aggregate concrete were less than those of ordinary concrete by 5-10%. However, the durability factor of recycled aggregate concrete remained above 90% at the substitution ratio of 30%. The quality of recycled aggregate concrete were improved by substitution at the range of less that 20% of fly ash and 30% of recycled aggregate.

The most common deterioration cause of concrete structures over the world is chloride ions attacks. Thus, service life modeling of concrete is a crucial issue in civil engineering society. Many studies on the durability of concrete have been accomplished, however, it is not easy to review literatures about environmental analysis. Since the durability of concrete depends on the properties of the surface concrete. micro-climatic condition which influences on surface concrete realistically should be considered. This study is devoted to analysis the micro-climatic condition of concrete structures, based on the in-situ monitoring of weather in marine environment. The effect of degree of saturation on chloride diffusivity of concrete is also examined. It is expected that the result of this work should be available for the prediction of chloride profile of marine concrete.
Although much research has been carried out using recycled aggregates sourced from normal strength concrete, most of the buildings to be demolished are constructed with low strength concrete. Therefore, the properties of the concrete incorporating recycled aggregates, sourced from the waste of structural elements cast with low strength concrete, were investigated in this study. Four different concrete mixtures were designed incorporating natural and recycled aggregates with and without fly ash. The results of the mechanical and durability tests of the concrete mixtures are presented. Additionally, full-scale one-way reinforced concrete slabs were cast, using these concrete mixtures, and subjected to bending test. The feasibility of using conventional reinforced concrete theory for the slabs made with structural concrete incorporating recycled aggregates was investigated.

The requirement for durability of concrete bridge deck is increasing as the deterioration for the concrete bridge deck exposed to severe environment has been increased. For this reason, the concern about high-durable concrete is being high. Recently, a metakaolin is highly spotlighted as new admixture because its strength and durability are equivalent to silica fume. On the other hands, there are few researches for the metakaolin concrete bridge deck in domestic. So many various long-term data on the mechanical property and durability is needed to apply metakaolin concrete at the concrete bridge deck construction field. This study is aim to evaluate the long-term mechanical properties and durability of metakaolin concrete bridge deck with curing age. Mechanical properties are estimated by the compressive and flexural strength, and the drying shrinkage, the chloride resistance, the scaling, and freezing and thawing characteristics are compared with curing age. According to the results, when the metakaolin concrete is used, the development of compressive and flexural strength proceed in both the early and old ages. It is also improved the resistance of chloride penetration, freezing and thawing in concrete. It was showed that replacement of metakaolin was efficient for the reduction of the drying shrinkage.

In the current concrete structure of the highway is still the major problem most of concrete deterioration caused by the freeze-thaw and deicing salt, which is of issues that are not completely resolved. In particular, a single freezing event does not cause much harm, durability of concrete under multi-deterioration environment by repeated freeze-thaw and deicing salt is rapidly degraded and reduce its service life. In this study, the exposure environmental condition according the regional highway points were established. The damage condition and chloride content of the concrete at general and severe environmental exposure condition were also investigated. In addition, the experimental test of chloride ion permeability, scaling resistant and freeze-thaw resistance were carried out to improve the durability of the mechanical placing concrete of subsidiary structure. According to the results of this study, in observation of concrete surface condition, the concrete exposed by severe environmental condition showed broad ranges of damage with high chloride contents. Meanwhile, the water-binder(W/B) ratio and the less water content, and fly ash concrete than the specified existing mix proportion is significantly improved the durability. Also, the optimal mix proportion derived for test is satisfied the strength and air contents, water-binder ratio, and durability criteria of concrete specifications, as well as service life seems greatly improved.
Even if the exploitation of copper slag produced during the smelting process of copper as aggregate for construction purpose has been permitted since 2004 in Korea, the lack of sufficient data enabling to evaluate its long-term stability that is its durability has to date impeded its application. This study intends to investigate experimentally the durability characteristics of 18 and 27 MPa-class commercial concretes in which natural sand (fine aggregates) has been partially replaced by copper slag through accelerated and exposure tests so as to provide bases promoting the application of copper slag concrete. The experimental results revealed insignificant difference of the durability characteristics in most of the mix proportions in which 30% of natural sand was replaced by copper slag. In the case where crushed sand was adopted, tests verified similar characteristics for replacement ratio of 50%. Particularly, the results of the exposure test conducted during 8 years demonstrated that equivalent level of durability was secured compared to the case using natural sand. In the case of 18MPa-class lower grade concrete, exposure test verified also that the physical lifetime similar to 50 years could be secured until carbonation reaches cover depth of 20 mm.

The corrosion of steel reinforcing bar(re-bar) has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) reinforcing bar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. In this study, long-term durability performance of FRP re-bar were evaluated. The mechanical and durability properties of two type of CFRP- and GFRP re-bar were investigated; the FRP re-bars were subjected to alkaline solution, acid solution, salt solution and deionized water. The mechanical and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile and short beam tests. Experimental results confirmed the desirable resistance of FRP re-bar to aggressive chemical environment.
