  • The function is a basic and key concept to understand mathematical problems. However, many students have difficulties to expand the knowledge to other related concepts and to transfer the knowledge to real world problems. The reasons for the problem may be that the concept of function is taught by simplified and abstracted formula without fully understanding of the reasoning process. Also, the examples for the concepts are artificial and not related to students' experiences. Situated learning theory provides great implications to solve these problems. So, this study was designed to teach the concept of function more meaningful to students by appling situated learning theory. Thirty-eight middle school students were participated in this study. Students were provided the instruction designed according to the principles of situated learning theory. Then, they were asked to complete attitude survey questionnair and a performance assessment task. The result showed that the instruction based on situated learning theory was useful to Promote students' understanding and motivation for learning. More implications of the study was provided in the paper.

  • In this study, using the tasks related trigonometric functions, the degree of high school students' understanding of the function concept was examined through the level of Hitt(1998). First, the degree of the students' understanding was classified by level, then the concept understanding was reclassified by the process or the object. As a result, high school students' concept understanding showed incompleteness in three stages. It was possible to know that the process in the interpretation of the graph is the main perspective, and the operation of algebraic representation is regarded as important. Based on these results, it seems necessary to study the teaching-learning method which can understand trigonometric functions from various perspectives. It seems necessary to study a lesson model that can reach function concept's understanding level 5 that maintains consistency between problem solving and representation system.

  • It is the important situation that the fashion industry is faced to enormous changes in the nation and worldwide market. To cope with this situations, it is necessary to clarify that the concept of fashion design and its process. This study was conducted as followings : 1. Fashion design is the process of problem solving including the steps of understanding problem, visualizing the image of a design concept. 2. The systematic and intuitive approach is harmonized to solve the process of fashion design. 3. The step of understanding problem is consist of the analysis of environments, the explanation of problem, the determination of purposes, the definition of problem and the visualizing the image of a design concept. 4. In the step of the visualizing the image of a design concept, the intuitive approaches can be clarifies as the importance of start, the step by step process, the determination of a design concept, the fixations of an image, the image realization through real objects, the diminution a difference between a concept and a visualizing the image and the necessity of exercises.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate elementary school students' understanding the concept and operations of decimal fraction. The survey research was performed for this study. This survey was done by selecting 156 students. Questionnaire were made in five areas with reference to the 2007 revised mathematics curriculum. Five areas were the concept of decimal fraction, the addition, the subtraction, the multiplication and the division of decimal fraction. The results of such analysis are as follow: The analyzed result of understanding about concepts and operation of decimal fraction showed a high rate of correct answer, more than 85%. Students thought that multiplication and division of decimal fraction is more difficult than addition, subtraction, concept of decimal fraction. As the learning about concepts and operation of decimal fraction progress, the learning gap is bigger. Effort to reduce the learning deficits are needed in the lower grades. Mathematics is the study of the hierarchical. Learning deficits in low-level interfere with the learning in next-level. Therefore systematic supplementary guidance for a natural number and decimal fraction in low-level is needed. And understanding concepts and principles of calculations should be taught first.

  • This study is on the teaching-learning of parameter concept in secondary school mathematics. In our school mathematics curriculum, parameter concept is explicitly presented at high school mathematics textbook. But student have difficulty in understanding parameter concept because this concept is implicitly used in the textbook from 7-grade mathematics. Moreover, it is true that mathematics teacher give a little attention to student's understanding of parameter con- cept. In this study, we analyzed concept definition of parameter and the extension of parameter on the basis of preceding research, our mathematical curriculum, mathematical dictionaries. After that, we concluded that parameter is explicitly called in t where x= f(t), y= g(t) and parameter is implicitly treated in the learning of relation between quantities in our mathematical curriculum. We pointed to the importance of parameter concept in the successful learning of school algebra. Specially, when the level of algebra is in the learning of relation between quantities, parameter is the key concept for understanding and representing of families of equations or functions. In mathematics class, students have opportunity to reflect that what the role of each variable(parameter, dependent variable, independent variable etc.) is, and where the information which determines it comes from. It is for mathematical communications as well as learning school algebra. Therefore, mathematics teacher's didactical attention is more needed to student have a good concept image of parameter before they learn explicitly its concept definition.

  • Trigonometric ratios are difficult concepts to teach and learn in middle school. One of the reasons is that the mathematical terms (sine, cosine, tangent) don't convey the idea literally. This paper deals with the understanding of a concept from the learner's standpoint, and searches the orientation of teaching that make students to have full understanding of trigonometric ratios. Such full understanding contains at least five constructs as follows: skill-algorithm, property-proof, use-application, representation-metaphor, history-culture understanding [Usiskin, Z. (2012). What does it mean to understand some mathematics? In: Proceedings of ICME12, COEX, Seoul Korea; July 8-15,2012 (pp. 502-521). Seoul, Korea: ICME-12]. Despite multi-aspects of understanding, especially, the history-culture aspect is not yet a part of the mathematics class on the trigonometric ratios. In this respect this study investigated the effect of history approach on students' understanding when the history approach focused on the mathematical terms is used to teach the concept of trigonometric ratios in Grade 9 mathematics class. As results, the experimental group obtained help in more full understanding on the trigonometric ratios through such teaching than the control group. This implies that the historical derivation of mathematical terms as well as the context of mathematical concepts should be dealt in the math class for the more full understanding of some mathematical concepts.

  • This article analyses the concept of medicine in the legal context. It is not easy to define the concept of medicine because medical practice has various dimensions and the situation in which the practice is performed has a broad variety. The duty of medical law is to build the boundary of protection in that the nature of medicine would not be distorted by the factors of social systems like industry or governmental authorities. Without understanding the various dimensions - especially the dimension of Humanities and Sociology - of the medicine it is not possible to draw the limit on the performance of medicine appropriately. Concerning the medical practice (especially in the context of the regulation of medical licence), the enacted law (Medical Act) defines the concept just for form's sake and it finally depends on the interpretation of the legal enforcement authorities. Moreover, between the judgments of the courts there exists no coherent principles for the regulation and the interpretation of the Medical Act depends often on the riskiness, the abstract concept, which finally leads the interpretation to depend on the subject of the practice. On the contrary, the development and scientific movement of the technology tends to tighten the range of the medical professionals of medical practice and the perspectives of the medicine. Medical act is actually oriented at the patient's understanding of him- or herself. The above-mentioned tendency of the interpretation and the legal policy could lead the medicine away from its nature.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop a probability program based on the actual condition of understanding of probability by the elementary school students from 3rd to 6th grade and search for ways to apply it to the 3rd grade of elementary school students. Based on the results from the research, the author reached a conclusion as following. After applying the learning program to five students of 3rd grade, all of the five students made progress understanding the concept of experimental and theoretical probability. However, for understanding the concept of example space, only two leading students were improved, which shows that students are having much difficulty in understanding the concept. As for under-standing the concept of experimental probability, many students gained the conceptual difference between the experimental and theoretical probability after using the program and enhanced their understanding of experimental probability.
