  • In 16 volunteers without clinical or laboratory evidence of liver disease, liver volume was determined using single-photon emission computed tomography(ECT). This technique provided excellent object contrast between the liver and its surroundings and permitted calculation of liver volume without geometric assumptions about the liver's configuration. Reproducibility of results was satisfactory, with a root-me an-square error of less than 2% between duplicate measurements in 16 individuals. The volume measurements were validated by the use of phantoms.

  • In this paper, a novel tissue engineering scaffold design method based on triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) is proposed. After generating the hexahedral elements for a 3D anatomical shape using the distance field algorithm, the unit cell libraries composed of triply periodic minimal surfaces are mapped into the subdivided hexahedral elements using the shape function widely used in the finite element method. In addition, a heterogeneous implicit solid representation method is introduced to design a 3D (Three-dimensional) bio-mimetic scaffold for tissue engineering from a sequence of computed tomography (CT) medical image data. CT image of a human spine bone is used as the case study for designing a 3D bio-mimetic scaffold model from CT image data.

  • The Center for Imaging Human Structures (CIH) was established in December 2002 to develop new diagnostic imaging techniques and to make them available to the greater community of biomedical and clinical researchers at Sungkyunkwan University. CIH has been involved in 5 specific activities to provide solutions for early diagnosis and improved treatment of human diseases. The five area goals include: 1) development of a digital mammography system with computer aided diagnosis (CAD); 2) development of digital radiological imaging techniques; 3) development of unified medical solutions using 3D image fusion; 4) development of multi-purpose digital endoscopy; and, 5) evaluation of new imaging systems for clinical application

  • Purpose: Pyomyositis is a rare disease in temperature climate region. The diagnosis of pyomyositis is often delayed, and pyomyositis is often misdiagnosed in the emergency department. Methods: The medical records of 11 patients who were diagnosed as having traumatic pyomyositis in the emergency department at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, Korea, between 2000 and 2006 were reviewed. Their clinical features, such as history, symptoms, clinical findings, duration from onset of symptoms to diagnosis, medical history, laboratory data, results of imaging studies and clinical course were collected. Results: The psoas muscles were most commonly involved. Computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging aided in accurate diagnosis of the infection and of the extent of involvement. Incision, drainage, and antibiotics therapy eradicated the infectioin in all patients Conclusion: Pyomyositis should be a part of the differential diagnosis for patients with traumatic muscle pain. Radiologic evaluation, such as computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, must be considered in the diagnosis of traumatic pyomyositis.

  • In this paper, we present methods to efficiently parallelize iterative 3D image reconstruction by exploiting trigeneous devices (three different types of device) at the same time: a CPU, an integrated GPU, and a discrete GPU. We first present a technique that exploits single instruction multiple data (SIMD) architectures in GPUs. Then, we propose a performance estimation model, based on which we can easily find the optimal data partitioning on trigeneous devices. We found that the performance significantly varies by up to 6.23 times, depending on how SIMD units in GPUs are accessed. Then, by using trigeneous devices and the proposed estimation models, we achieve optimal partitioning and throughput, which corresponds to a 9.4% further improvement, compared to discrete GPU-only execution.

  • The deterioration in wood by the brown-rot fungus (Fomitopsispalustris) and the white-rot fungus (Trametesversicolor) were measured using ultrasonic velocity. Those were used for the decay exposure and 4 wood species of wood as the test specimens, Pinusdensiflora, Larixkaempferi, Pinuskoraiensis and Pinusrigida, were chosen with both the brown- and white-rot culture petridish during 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, the decrease rate of ultrasonic velocity was measured at 10~15%. In both brown- and white-rot exposure experiments, P. rigida showed significant decrease in ultrasonic velocity (20%), L. kaempferi on the other hand did not show decrease in ultrasonic velocity. After the fungal exposure experiment, the inside of specimens was investigated by computer tomography (C/T). After C/T investigation, bending tests were performed.

  • Subspace analysis is a popular method for multivariate data analysis and is closely related to factor analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). In the context of image processing (especially positron emission tomography), all data points are nonnegative and it is expected that both basis images and factors are nonnegative in order to obtain reasonable result. In this paper We present a sequential EM algorithm for rectified subspace analysis (subspace in nonnegativity constraint) and apply it to dynamic PET image analysis. Experimental results show that our proposed method is useful in dynamic PET image analysis.

  • The thixoforming process become important for forming automobile parts. But, the thixoforming process cannot still prevent to forming defects such as pores and shrinkage which reduce mechanical properties of automobile parts. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the correlation between forming defects and mechanical properties. However, it is difficult to get data about relations between mechanical properties and forming defects in thixoformed aluminum alloy parts. In this study, three parts of aluminum thixoformed knuckle have been analyzed using tensile test and computer tomography(CT scan). Experimental results showed that the elongation properties of thixoformed aluminum parts were significantly dependent on size and number of forming defects.

  • This study examined the readability of 4 different kinds of patient education handouts about computer tomography tests from 5 different university-affiliated hospitals in Korea. Readability was evaluated in terms of syntax. length of sentence, usage of unfamiliar words. foreign words. Chinese words, abbreviation, and technical jargon. This study found that all of the handouts were very difficult to read. An excessive use of complex and long sentences was found. Unfamiliar words, rarely used in everyday life, were recklessly used. Most of the unfamiliar words were Chinese words and can be exchanged with Korean language. Excessive medical terminologies were used without any explanations. Based on the study results, guidelines to make the handouts easier and more accessible to patients and their family were recommended.

  • Recently, to make a diagnosis of the patient different X-Ray examinations are used. To name a few, Computed Tomography(CT). Magnetic Resonance Image(MRI) Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography(SPET) and Positron Emission Tomography(PET). But diagnosticians face difficulties sometimes when they make a diagnosis with images from those examinations. One of the problem is whether the Lesions of the patient is captured in the image correctly. Another one is whether the images are taken with same angle. in this paper, a study 9 on the method to obtain the hybrid image from the different images to different examinations. The procedure done in this paper is described as future study. Although small errors in position between images would occurred, this method more useful as it does not make patients in convenient. To reconstruct a image, some images are scanned by scanner and stored to personal computer for further image processing with Aldus photostyler program. The method to generate a sharpened image are also described.
