  • For the propagation of elastic waves in unbounded domains, absorbing boundary conditions at the fictitious numerical boundaries have been proposed. Paraxial boundary conditions(PBCs) which are kinds of absorbing boundary conditions based on paraxial approximations of the scalar and elastic wave equations not only lead to well-posed problem but also are stable and computationally inexpensive. But the complex mathematical forms of PBCs with partial derivatives complicate the application of those to finite element analysis. In this paper a penalty functional is newly proposed for applying PBCs into finite element analysis and the existence and uniqueness of the extremum of the proposed functional is demonstrated. The numerical verification of the efficiency is carried out through comparing PBCs with a viscous boundary condition.

  • FEM (Finite Element Method) is a fundamental numerical analysis technique in wide spread use in engineering application. As the solving time occupies small portion of entire FEM analysis time because of development of hardware, the relative lime to the whole analysis time to make mesh mod-els is growing. In particular, in the case of stiffeners such as features attached to plate in ship structure, the line constraints are imposed on mesh model together with other constraints such as holes. To auto-matically generate two dimensional quadrilateral mesh with the line constraints, an algorithm is pro-posed based on the constrained Delaunay triangulation and Q-Morph algorithm in which the line constraints are not considered. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated. And some numerical results of our proposed algorithm ate presented.

  • Flow control butterfly valve(FCBV) is known to have difficulty in controlling flow rate along valve opening due to its high flow rate. In low opening condition, the butterfly valve also has some shortcomings such as noise, vibration and erosion which are mostly caused by cavitation effects. Therefore, the FCBV requires proper remedies to reduce cavitation effects and to improve flow control performance. Numerical analysis is applied to FCBV flow to find effects of design factors such as seat diameter and valve opening rate. Cases with 3 different sizes of seat diameter and various valve opening rate are selected for the numerical analysis. From the analysis results, it is found that the FCBV with small seat diameter shows better pressure loss performance and reduced cavitation effects.

  • This paper presents a method for the dynamic analysis of constrained multibody systems undergoing abrupt collision. The proposed method uses a longer time interval to check collision than that of c onventional method. This reduces the computational effort significantly. To calculate collision points on two colliding rigid bodies, one may introduce constraints of contact. However, this causes reduction of degree of freedom and difficulty of numerical analysis. The proposed method can calculate collision points without above mentioned problems. Three numerical examples are given to demonstrate the computational efficiency and the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • Theoretical Bit Error Rate (BER) and channel capacity analysis are always of great interest to the designers of wireless communication systems. At the center of such analyses people are often encountered with a high-dimensional multiple integrals with quite complex integrands. Conventional Gaussian quadrature is inefficient in handling problems like this, as it tends to entail tremendous computational overhead, and the principal order of its error term increase rapidly with the dimension of the integral. In this paper, we propose a new approach to calculate complex multi-fold integrals based on the number theory. In contrast to Gaussian quadrature, the proposed approach requires less computational effort, and the principal order of its error term is independent of the dimension. The effectiveness of the number theory based approach is examined in BER and capacity analyses for practical systems. In particular, the results generated by numerical computation turn out in good match with that of Monte-Carlo simulations.

  • In this paper, we analyze an N-design call center with skill-based routing, in which one pool of agents handles two types of calls and another pool of agents handles only one type of calls. The approximate analysis is motivated by a computational complexity that has been observed in the direct stochastic approach and numerical method for finding performance measures. The workforce staffing policy is very important to the successful management of call centers. So the allocation scheduling of the agents can be considered as the optimization problem of the corresponding queueing system to the call center. We use a decomposition algorithm which divides the state space of the queueing system into the subspaces for the approximate analysis of the N-design call center with two different types of agents. We also represent some numerical examples and show the impact of the system parameters on the performance measures.

  • A numerical analysis was made for the unsteady flow fields of rotor system of a Tilt-Rotor aircraft in cruise mode. The Reynolds-averaged thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations were discretized by Roe's upwind differencing scheme and integrated in time by the LU-SGS algorithm. The computational domain of the rotor system was constructed by six multi-block Chimera grids. Simulated unsteady flow fields of rotating blades were studied in several different view points.

  • This paper proposes modified Lanczos vector superposition method for efficient dynamic analysis of structures. Proposed method is based on the modified Lanczos algorithm that generates stiffness-orthonormal Lanczos vectors. Proposed method has better computing efficiency than the conventional Lanczos vector superposition method in the analysis of multi-input-loaded structures. The efficiency of proposed method is verified through numerical examples. Comparison with other vector superposition methods is also presented through numerical examples.

  • In this paper, the effect of modification of geometric variables on the performance of a centrifugal compressor blade has been studied numerically. The compressor contains six main blades and six splitter blades. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with shear stress turbulence (SST) model are discretized by finite volume approximations and solved on hexahedral grids for flow analysis. The design variables from blade lean angle at tip and middle of the blade have been modified. The isentropic blade efficiency and pressure have been predicted with the variation of the variables. Frozen rotor simulation is performed and adiabatic wall condition has been used. One of the six blades of compressor has been used for simulation to reduce the computational load. Optimum number of meshes has been selected by grid-dependency test, and this is used for all the simulations with changing geometric variables. The detailed flow analysis results have been reported as well as the effects of the variables.

  • A new algorithm using meshless particle method for the analysis of crack propagation problems is presented. The meshless particle method requires only a set of nodes and the description of boundaries in its formulation. The method is particulary useful for crack propagation problems due to the absence of any predefined element connectivity. Formulation procedures for the construction of displacement and shape functions are described. A numerical integration scheme and a strategy for the consideration of crack propagation are also described. Numerical examples show that the proposed method is very convenient and efficient in modeling crack problems and can guarantee the accuracy of solution in crack propagation analysis.
