This study examines the importance of learning language and cultural integration in general English class focused on TOEIC reading comprehension. The understanding of cultural learning and learners' cultural awareness has long been a subject of debate. This study was not only to analyze the improvement of students' interest and reading comprehension ability of TOEIC through cultural learning, but also to ensure students who learn American culture overcome cross-cultural miscommunication and improve their English reading comprehension skills. Pre-post surveys and the pre-post TOEIC tests were used to measure language proficiency and American cultural knowledge to two groups: the experimental and control group. The results from the study were as follows: First, students had better TOEIC scores with improved motivation after understanding American culture relevant to the lessons. Second, reading comprehension skills with regards to TOEIC also improved, compared with the students who were not exposed to American culture due to lack of opportunity.
The aim of the present study was to investigate a simile comprehension of children with and without mental retardation. Thirteen children with mental retardation and ten normal children with matched receptive vocabulary ability participated in the study. They were between five and eight years old in the age of receptive vocabulary. Fourteen picture plates were used and each plate consisted of three pictures. The findings were as fellows. First, children with mental retardation made significantly more errors than normal children in the comprehension of simile. Second, mental retarded children and normal children did not have a significant correlation between receptive vocabulary development and comprehension of simile. Finally, on simile interpretation type, children with mental retardation were likely to think a tenor into a vehicle because they failed to recognize the syntactic structure of simile, 'A is like B'. Thus, It is important to teach mental retarded children the syntactic structures of simile and to provide them with a variety of experience as well as to let them know an exact meaning of words.
The purpose of this study was to examine how the home and classroom literacy environment affect preschool children's story comprehension. The subjects were 213 pairs of children (aged 4-5) and their mothers, and 107 classrooms. The Home Literacy Environment Rating Scale (Park & Kim, 2008), Classroom Literacy Environment Observation Scale (Kim, Kim, Im, & Lee, 2008) and the Children's Comprehension Ability Test (Jung & Kim, 2003) were used in this study. The collected data were analyzed by means of two-way ANOVA, partial correlations, Pearson correlations, hierarchical regressions. Our results indicated that preschool children's story comprehension increases when both home and classroom literacy environment are well resourced and supported. In particular, it is essential that parents spend as much time as possible reading books with their children and that teachers provide children with an amply resourced literacy environment together with appropriate activities in class geared towards story comprehension improvement.

Purpose: This study was done to compare the comprehension and knowledge about delirium in nurses working at long-term care hospitals (NLH) with nurses working at a general hospital (NGH). Method: The participants were 191 nurses from a general hospital and 7 long-term care hospitals in Chungnam. The tool for comprehension consisted of the needs and importance of delirium education and the confidence of management for early detection, caring and prevention of delirium. The tool for knowledge of delirium developed by the author consisted of causing factors, symptoms, caring and prevention of delirium. Result: The comprehension of need and importance of delirium education was higher than the confidence for delirium management in participants. NLH nurses had a higher level in comprehension of the need and importance of delirium education and a lower level in confidence of delirium management than NGH nurses. The mean for delirium knowledge was 75.32% for all participants. The knowledge of NLH nurses was significantly lower than those of NGH nurses. All nurses showed low scores in confidence and knowledge of delirium prevention. Conclusion: A systematic educational program for nurses to enhance the ability for assessment, early detection and prevention of delirium for institutionalized elderly patients needs to be developed.
This study attempts to provide a comprehensive framework for listening strategy use among university students in Korea in relation to TOEIC listening scores. In particular, this study tests whether motivation, based on the self-determination theory, mediates listening strategy use on listening comprehension (LC) process and whether reading comprehension ability moderates the use of listening strategy in LC achievement. One hundred seventy six freshmen students participated in the study during their first semester required English course. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess students' motivation and LC strategy use. The responses were statistically analyzed via the moderator and mediator model. The results indicate that internalized motivation mediates the use of listening strategy in LC achievement; however, reading comprehension skill doesn't affect students' use of listening strategies in relation to listening skill achievement. In other words, students who have internalized motivation were able to utilize listening strategies effectively in terms of achievement of the TOEIC listening skills. The findings of the current study offer in-depth understanding of the relationship among use of LC strategies, intrinsic motivation, and listening skill achievement shared by the mediator and moderator models.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of semantic mapping as a science text reading strategy on high school students' inferential understanding. For this purpose, eight science text reading classes were conducted a reading strategy using semantic mapping for 46 students in two science-focused classes in the third grade of a high school. To investigate the effects of semantic mapping reading strategy on students' inferential comprehension, students' pre- and post-reading ability tests results were analyzed. In order to find out the change in inferential comprehension, the level of the inferential comprehension was analyzed using the analysis framework for developed in this study. For the classification of inferential comprehension, the levels of the inferential comprehension were converted into scores. The results of the analysis of changes in students' inferential comprehension showed that semantic mapping reading strategy classes influenced the changes in high school students' inference, especially bridge inference and elaborative inference among sub-elements of inferential comprehension.
The aim of this study is to improve the basic learning ability of those who make poor progress in mathematics and to keep positive and active learning attitudes in class afterward by using problems whith both make them advance their basic learning ability and supplement lack of previous learning in class or after school. supplementary problems were developed by focusing the ability of basic calculation, the comprehension of concepts, principles, and rules by analyzing necessary contents precisely each domain after itemizing learning contents each unit. the results of the study are this: 1) The students who solved the problems, that were developed to improve the basic learning ability and to supplement the earlier learning during their classes or giving homework, made significant progress in their scholastic achievement; more than those who were not involved. 2) Meaningful changes were demonstrated in the motivation for achievement among the domains of learning attitudes before and after the experiment but, not in their interest, the consciousness of purpose, attention, voluntary and efficient learning as shown in their learning habits. In this study, therefore, the problems which were developed to improve the basic learning ability and to supplement the earlier learning by focusing on the competence for basic calculation, and the comprehension of concepts, principles and rules were effective positively only in the area of motivation for achievement. there were no meaningful differences in the other domains.
The purpose of this study is to measure the level and importance of the key competencies of technical high school students in order to improve their key competencies. The subject was 12 teachers in charge of school-to-work education in a technical high school and 7 managers responsible for an apprentice in a company. The results of this study showed there was a difference in perception of the key competencies between teachers in charge of school-to-work education and managers responsible for that part in a company. Especially, both of two groups, teacher group and manager group, estimated apprentice's comprehension ability of the English documents low and also regarded its importance as low. So the comprehension ability of the English documents needs to be reconsidered as the key competencies. It appeared that the reading comprehension ability of Chinese characters and the ability of listening courteously needed to be added to the existing key competencies. To cultivate them, the key competencies should be examined accurately which technical high school students have to master. And on the basis of this, an instrument to measure the key competencies needs to be developed.
