Although extensive efforts have been devoted to the optimal design of composite laminated plates in recent years, some practical issues still need further research. One of them is the handling of the uncertainties in material properties, which were ignored in most researches in the past. In this paper, the convex modeling is used in calculating the failure criterion, given as constraint, to consider the uncertain material properties in the thickness optimization. Numerical results show that the optimal thickness increases when the uncertainties of elastic moduli considered, which shows such uncertainties should not be ignored for safe and reliable designs.
The objective of this study is to formulate a general 3D material-structural analysis framework for the thermomechanical behavior of steel-concrete structures in a fire environment. The proposed analysis framework consists of three sequential modeling parts: fire dynamics simulation, heat transfer analysis, and a thermomechanical stress analysis of the structure. The first modeling part consists of applying the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) where coupled CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with thermodynamics are combined to realistically model the fire progression within the steel-concrete structure. The goal is to generate the spatial-temporal (ST) solution variables (temperature, heat flux) on the surfaces of the structure. The FDS-ST solutions are generated in a discrete form. Continuous FDS-ST approximations are then developed to represent the temperature or heat-flux at any given time or point within the structure. An extensive numerical study is carried out to examine the best ST approximation functions that strike a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The second modeling part consists of a finite-element (FE) transient heat analysis of the structure using the continuous FDS-ST surface variables as prescribed thermal boundary conditions. The third modeling part is a thermomechanical FE structural analysis using both nonlinear material and geometry. The temperature history from the second modeling part is used at all nodal points. The ABAQUS (2003) FE code is used with external user subroutines for the second and third simulation parts in order to describe the specific heat temperature nonlinear dependency that drastically affects the transient thermal solution especially for concrete materials. User subroutines are also developed to apply the continuous FDS-ST surface nodal boundary conditions in the transient heat FE analysis. The proposed modeling framework is applied to predict the temperature and deflection of the well-documented third Cardington fire test.
In this study, a progressive damage modeling is developed to predict functional failure pressure of GRP pipes subjected to internal hydrostatic pressure. The modeling procedure predicts both first-ply failure pressure and functional failure pressure associated with the weepage phenomenon. The modeling procedure is validated using experimental observations. The random parameters attributed to the filament winding production process are identified. Consequently, stochastic simulation is conducted to investigate the influence of induced inconsistencies on the functional failure pressures of GRP pipes. The obtained results are compared to realize the degree to which random parameters affect the performance of the pipe in operation.
In this study, a new modeling framework for predicting temperature and structural behaviors of structures under fire condition is proposed. The proposed modeling framework including fire simulation, heat transfer and structural analysis is applied to simulate fire tests performed on the steel-concrete composite structures in Cardington, UK, for model validations. Good predictions are shown for spatial-temporal temperatures and deflections of fire-damaged steel-concrete structures.
The composite beam connections often encountered fracture failure in the welded bottom flange joint, and a bottom flange bolted connection has been proposed to increase the deformation ability of the bottom flange joint. The seismic performance of the bottom flange bolted composite beam connection was suffered from both the composite action of concrete slab and the asymmetric load transfer mechanisms between top and bottom beam flange joints. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive numerical study on the working mechanism of the bottom flange bolted composite beam connections. Three available modelling methods and a new modelling method on the flange-stud-slab interactions were compared. The efficient numerical modeling method was selected and then applied to the parametric study. The influence of the composite slab, the bottom flange bolts, the shear composite ratio and the web hole shape on the seismic performance of the bottom flange bolted composite beam connections were investigated. A hogging strength calculation method was then proposed based on numerical results.
To develop an effective geometric modeling is essential in order that precise material properties of the 3-D braided composite can be estimated. in this study RVE(representative volume element) which is the smallest volume element representing whole material properties is developed to estimate the mechanical properties of 3-D flat board shaped braided composite using volume averaging method.
This study is focused on an integrated numerical modeling enabling one to investigate the dynamic behavior and failure of 2-D textile composite and 3-D orthogonal woven composite structures weakened by micro-cracks and subjected to an impact load. The integrated numerical modeling is based on: I) determination of governing equations via a three-level hierarchy: micro-mechanical unit cell analysis, layer-wise analysis accounting for transverse strains and stresses, and structural analysis based on anisotropic plate layers, II) development of an efficient computational approach enabling one to perform transient response analyses of 2-D plain woven and 3-D orthogonal woven composite structures featuring the matrix cracking and exposed to time-dependent loads, III) determination of the structural characteristics of the textile-layered composites and their degraded features under various geometrical yarn shapes, and finally, IV) assessment of the implications of stiffness degradation on dynamic response to impact loads.
Composite laminated structures supported on elastic foundations are being increasingly used in a great variety of engineering applications. Composites exhibit larger dispersion in their material properties compared to the conventional materials due to large number of parameters associated with their manufacturing and fabrication processes. And also the dispersion in elastic foundation stiffness parameter is inherent due to inaccurate modeling and determination of elastic foundation properties in practice. For a better modeling of the material properties and foundation, these are treated as random variables. This paper deals with effects of randomness in material properties and foundation stiffness parameters on the free vibration response of laminated composite plate resting on an elastic foundation. A $C^0$ finite element method has been used for arriving at an eigen value problem. Higher order shear deformation theory has been used to model the displacement field. A mean centered first order perturbation technique has been employed to handle randomness in system properties for obtaining the stochastic characteristic of frequency response. It is observed that small amount of variations in random material properties and foundation stiffness parameters significantly affect the free vibration response of the laminated composite plate. The results have been compared with those available in the literature and an independent Monte Carlo simulation.
