  • Depending on the operating characteristics, track circuit is installed for the purpose of direct or indirect control of the signal device, point switch machine and other security device. These are mainly used for train detection, transmission of information, broken rail detection and transmission of return current. Especially, the return current is related to signal system, power system and catenary line, and track circuit systems. It is one of the most important component shall be dealt for the safety of track side staff and for the protection of railway-related electrical system according to electrification. Therefore, an accurate analysis of the return current is needed to prevent the return current unbalance and the system induced disorder and failure due to an over current condition. Also, if the malfunction occurred by the return current harmonics, it can cause problems including train operation interruption. In this paper, we presented measurement and analysis method at return current and it's harmonics by high speed train operation on the honam high speed line.

  • Purpose: We evaluated treatment outcomes of thymic carcinomas to determine prognostic factors for survival. Materials and Methods: Between May 1988 and May 2009, 41 patients had pathologic diagnosis of thymic carcinoma in Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Of these, 40 patients were followed up to 188 months after treatment. The mean age of all patients was 58.3 years and male to female ratio was 23 to 17. Results: Among 30 patients who underwent surgical resection, 26 achieved R0 resection and postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) was performed in 22 patients (73%). Various chemotherapeutic regimens were given with local treatment modalities, surgery and/or radiotherapy, in 12 patients. The 5-year locoregional control (LRC), distant metastasis-free survival, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival were 79.4%, 53.0%, 42.6%, and 63.6%, respectively. Patients with Masaoka stage I or II showed excellent prognosis of 5-year PFS around 90%. In advanced stages, invasion of the great vessels or atrium by thymic carcinomas was negative prognostic factor for PFS in univariate analysis. Lymph node involvement was statistically significant factor for LRC and PFS. Local or regional recurrence was infrequent after surgical resection followed by PORT, while distant metastasis was the major component of treatment failure. Conclusion: Complete resection followed by PORT provided remarkable local control without severe acute toxicities in patients with stage II and favorable stage III thymic carcinoma. Invasion of the great vessels or atrium was statistically significant prognostic factor for PFS.

  • Since a device such as a rocket motor requires very high reliability, a reasonable reliability design process is essential. However, Korea has implemented a design method for applying a safety factor to each component. In classic reliability analysis, input variables such as mean and standard deviation, used in the limit state function, are treated as deterministic values. Because the mean and standard deviation are determined by a small amount of data, this approach could lead to inaccurate results. In this study, reliability analysis is performed for bolted joints and o-ring seals, and the Bayesian approach is used to statistically estimate the input variables. The estimated variables and failure probability, calculated by the reliability analysis, are derived in the form of probability distributions.

  • In this paper, filters are designed to reduce transients overvoltage in inverter fed high-voltage large-capacity induction motor drive system. Design issues for a LCR filter at the inverter output terminals to reduce the dv/dt of the inverter output pulse and a RC filter at the induction motor input terminals to match the characteristic impedance between cable and induction motor are examined in detail. These filters are modeled to be suitable to high-voltage large-capacity induction motor. The performance of the filter is evaluated through simulation using EMTP(ElectroMagnetic Transients Program). We presented filters that used high voltage large-capacity induction Motor on the basis of this. Effect of the filter is analyzed for variation of the cable length. Characteristics of filters are analyzed to reduce harmonic in voltage waveform of induction motor input terminal. The switching surge voltage became the major cause to occur the insulation failure by serious voltage stress in the stator winding of induction motor. Filter for to mitigate transients overvoltage presents a required component in drive system of high-voltage large-capacity induction motor. Also, proposed filters are proved through simulation using EMTP.

  • A Distributed File System (DFS) provides a mechanism in which a file can be stored across several physical computer nodes ensuring replication transparency and failure transparency. Applications that process large volumes of data (such as, search engines, grid computing applications, data mining applications, etc.) require a backend infrastructure for storing data. And the distributed file system is the central component for such storing data infrastructure. There have been many projects focused on network computing that have designed and implemented distributed file systems with a variety of architectures and functionalities. In this paper, we describe a complete distributed file system which can be used in large-scale search-oriented systems.

  • In this paper, a numerical model for a Kevlar/Epoxy and Carbon-Kevlar/Epoxy tube used as an energy absorbing component has been developed and then results have been verified through experiment. The 2D shell element and Chang-Chang failure criterion of LS-DYNA that is commercial explicit FE code was used. Mechanical material properties for the model were obtained by material testing in advance. The numerical results were compared with quasi-static test results under axial compressive loading at 10mm/min. From the results, in the case of the Kevlar/Epoxy tube, load-crushed displacement curves were very close to the experiments and SEA (specific energy absorption) shows a good agreement with experimental one within less than 6%. However, the Carbon-Kevlar/Epoxy tube shows some differences with the experimental results.

  • As the business environment is rapidly changing with globalization and complexity of information flows, the uncertainty is also very increased for project environment. Although many studies have been conducted to find out the critical factors for project success, there still exist different views to define project success. Furthermore, implementing success formula for one project does not necessarily guarantee a success for another project since there are other elements that impede the success of project. In this regards, it is imperative to examine what are the barriers to project success. This study aims to examine the barriers that impede the success of project. Past literature was thoroughly reviewed to collect and develop a preliminary list of elements that affected project performance negatively. Experts were interviewed to refine the list and the final list of the measurement items were developed. A survey questionnaire was developed with the final list of measurement items, and a survey was conducted on the practitioners with project experience. After the survey, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the final list to extract the component dimensions which in turn formed the group of project barriers. The exploratory factor analysis provided ten factors, which are difficulty of process management, failure of project feasibility analysis, cost overruns and lack of cost benefits, unclarity project plan, strategic consistency error, stakeholder conflict, inaccuracy of requirement definition, disturbance of communication, technical environment change, negative attitude of top management.

  • Redundant arrays of independent disks (RAID) without a power-fail-safe component in small and mid-sized business suffers from intolerably long resynchronization time after a unclean power-failure. Data blocks and a parity block in a stripe must be updated in a consistent manner, however a data block may be updated but the corresponding parity block may not be updated when a power goes off. Such a partially modified stripe must be updated with a correct parity block. However, it is difficult to find which stripe is partially updated (inconsistent). The widely-used traditional parity resynchronization manner is a intolerably long process that scans the entire volume to find and fix inconsistent stripes. This paper presents a fast resynchronization scheme with a negligible overhead for small and mid-sized RAIDs. The proposed scheme is integrated into a software RAID driver in a Linux system. According to the performance evaluation, the proposed scheme shortens the resynchronization process from 200 minutes to 5 seconds with 2% overhead for normal I/Os.

  • Until the discovery of universal gravitation, a magnet had been considered to be a unique and magical stuff which exhibited an interacting force between two objects separated afar. Perhaps because of this belief, magnets were used widely as a medicinal stuff in East-Asia. In the present article, the records regarding the applications of a magnet for oriental medicine in written Korean history were surveyed. The records were categorized in terms of efficacy, prescription, and clinical case of taking-medicine. The records revealed that a magnet was used as an important component in the medicine for curing kidney filtering failure. Magnet was also prescribed to heal heart problems. Typical magnet-containing medicines included the SHINRYUKTANG, JIHWANGTANG, and INSAMBAEKHOTANG. Interestingly, it was revealed that some of the kings (Hyojong, Yungjo) in the era of Josun dynasty (1392-1910) believed the efficacy of the magnet-containing medicine and took it for curing their health problems.
