  • The experiments have been performed to obtain zinc complex compound with smaller particle sizes, which is used as a charge control agent in manufacturing toner. Metallic salts and polyhydric alcohols have been studied to investigate their effects on the formation and the triboelectric charge of zinc complex-compound particle with different sizes. Reactants such as zinc chloride and 3,5-di-tert.-butyl salicylic acid have been used to form the complex compound. Polyethylene glycol (PEG-300), glycerin and ethylene glycol have been added into the zinc chloride solution beforehand to lower the reaction rate in the formation of zinc complex-compound. Aluminium(III) chloride has been mixed in the zinc chloride solution beforehand to restrain the particle size from growing. When PEG-300 and aluminium(III) chloride are used to lower the reaction rate and to restrain the particle size from growing, the average particle size of zinc complex compound decreases from $5.28{\mu}m$ to $2.33{\mu}m$, which was 44.1% of $5.28{\mu}m$.

  • Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of reducing particle size of corn from 1,000 to 500 ${\mu}m$ in simple and complex diets for nursery pigs and broiler chicks. In Exp 1., 192 nursery pigs were used in a 24 d growth assay. Treatments were: 1) 1,000 ${\mu}m$ corn in a simple diet; 2) 500 ${\mu}m$ corn in a simple diet; 3) 1,000 ${\mu}m$ corn in a complex diet; and 4) 500 ${\mu}m$ corn in a complex diet. Overall, pigs fed complex diets had 9% greater ADG (p<0.005) and 5% greater gain/feed (p<0.01) compared to pigs fed simple diets. Also, pigs fed the 500 ${\mu}m$ treatments had 3% better overall gain/feed than those fed the 1,000 ${\mu}m$ treatments (p<0.007). At d 9, apparent digestibilities of DM, N and GE were greater for complex diets and diets with smaller particle size (p<0.02). At d 23, there were no differences in nutrient digestibility resulting from diet complexity, but pigs fed diets with corn ground to 500 ${\mu}m$ had greater digestibility of DM (p<0.02) and GE (p<0.003) than pigs fed diets with corn ground to 1,000 ${\mu}m$. A second experiment was designed to determine if four days old broiler chicks were an acceptable model for predicting the effects of feed processing procedures on nursery pigs. Chicks fed complex diets had 3% greater gain/feed than chicks fed simple diets (p<0.001). Rate of gain and feed intake were improved by 3 and 2%, respectively, for chicks fed crumbled diets (p<0.03). However, there were several significant interactions among the main effects. For instance, crumbling did not affect gain/feed in chicks fed complex diets, but rate of gain and feed intake were increased by 7 and 6%, respectively, when simple diets were crumbled (diet complexity${\times}$diet form, p<0.001). Also, gain/feed of chicks was improved by 3% when particle size was reduced in meal diets, but not affected in chicks fed crumbles (diet form${\times}$particle size, p<0.005). Thus, our data suggested that reduction of particle size of corn was important for simple and complex diets and that a complex diet with 1,000 ${\mu}m$ corn gave no better performance than a simple diet with 500 ${\mu}m$ corn.

  • In Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, there are not only power plants and large steel complexes, but also small and medium-sized air pollutant emission facilities. The dust generated by these facilities has a very small particle size and a large surface area due to condensation and physical and chemical reactions, and is discharged containing various harmful substances. Therefore, this study analyzed the distribution of particulate matter and heavy metal concentrations by particle size in the vicinity of the steel complex, residential area, and reference point using an eight-stage Cascade Impactor. Overall, the direct impact sites with a short distance from the steel complex had the highest concentration, followed by the indirect impact sites, and the non-impact sites had the lowest concentration, indicating that they are directly affected by the steel complex. The atmospheric dust concentration distribution showed a bimodal distribution with a minimum value around the 1.1 to 2.1 ㎛ particle diameter. However, during the yellow dust event, the maximum concentration was biased toward coarse particles. The proportion of PM2.5 in the dust tended to be higher in winter, while the ratio between PM2.5 and PM10 was relatively higher in spring. Regardless of the location of the impact point, heavy metals in the dust were dominated by iron and aluminum, followed by zinc, lead, and manganese.

  • A kinetic model for particle coarsening behavior in the weld heat affected zone (HAZ) was proposed. Unlike the conventional approach, where the mean-sized particle is considered to grow continuously, the proposed model considered the critical particle size which can be derived from the Gibbs-Thomson equation. In this study, the proposed particle coarsening model was applied to study the behavior of (Ti, Nb )(C, N) complex particle in the weld HAZ. The predicted particle size distributions using the proposed model were in agreement with the experimental results.

  • The visual attention mechanism includes 2 attention models, the bottom-up (B-U) and the top-down (T-D), the physiology of which have not yet been accurately described. In this paper, the visual attention mechanism is regarded as a Bayesian fusion process, and a visual attention model based on particle filter is proposed. Under certain particular assumed conditions, a calculation formula of Bayesian posterior probability is deduced. The visual attention fusion process based on the particle filter is realized through importance sampling, particle weight updating, and resampling, and visual attention is finally determined by the particle distribution state. The test results of multigroup images show that the calculation result of this model has better subjective and objective effects than that of other models.

  • The particle which has two different characteristics on both sides is called Janus particle which is emerging as a key material in microscale transport systems. For example, if one hemisphere has polarity and the other does not, then nonpolar sides would attract each other so that a complex cluster is formed. Thus, this fascinating material can be used as an element of twisting ball panel display, complex micro-scale clusters, drug delivery unit, and active detecting beads. The keywords in developing Janus particle are size and uniformity. Former researches solved uniformity but downsizing still remains a problem. There are three methods to generate small size particles in microchannels: co-flowing, cross-flowing, and elongational flows. In this research, we generate Janus particles smaller than 10-${\mu}$m in diameter using elongational flow in microchannels. And we use UV initiator with Hydrogen UV source to solidify micro size particles. One hemisphere of the particle is coated with rhodamin for visualization.

  • The complex variable reproducing kernel particle method (CVRKPM) and the FEM are coupled in this paper to analyze the two-dimensional potential problems. The coupled method not only conveniently imposes the essential boundary conditions, but also exploits the advantages of the individual methods while avoiding their disadvantages, resulting in improved computational efficiency. A hybrid approximation function is applied to combine the CVRKPM with the FEM. Formulations of the coupled method are presented in detail. Three numerical examples of the two-dimensional potential problems are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method.

  • Microcapsules were prepared by complex coacervation between gelatin and gum arabic. The object of this work is evaluation of the effect of jelly strength, hardening agent on the particle size distribution, surface morphology and DSC. It was found that the 300bloom jelly strength caused microcapsules' size larger. When the amount of hardening agent increased, the particle mean diameter was larger. The amount of hardening agent was determined to be 10m1 for getting suitable size to finish the fabric.

  • The electromagnetic wave (EM) absorption properties of various particle size have been investigated in a sheet-type absorber using the $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_{7}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ alloy powder. With decreasing the average particle size, the complex permeability (${\mu}_{r}$) and permittivity (${\varepsilon}_{r}$) increased and the matching frequency is shifted toward lower frequency. The fabricated EM wave absorbers showed permeability $2{\sim}6$, permittivity $17{\sim}23$ for a $-325{\sim}+400$ mesh sample, and the calculated power absorption was as high as 80% in the frequency range over 2 GHz.
