  • A fast gamma-ray dose rate assessment method for complex geometries based on stylized model reconstruction and point-kernel method is proposed in this paper. The complex three-dimensional (3D) geometries are imported as a 3DS format file from 3dsMax software with material and radiometric attributes. Based on 3D stylized model reconstruction of solid mesh, the 3D-geometrical solids are automatically converted into stylized models. In point-kernel calculation, the stylized source models are divided into point kernels and the mean free paths (mfp) are calculated by the intersections between shield stylized models and tracing ray. Compared with MCNP, the proposed method can implement complex 3D geometries visually, and the dose rate calculation is accurate and fast.

  • When computing the flow around complex three dimensional aircraft configurations, the generation of the grid is the most time consuming part. This paper presents a survey of the grid generation technique. The technique for treating problems arising in surface grid generation for complex geometries is addressed. Several example grids are shown, demonstrating the ability of the method to discretize complex geometries.

  • This work presents numerical and experimental analyses of the behavior of reinforced-concrete deep beams with unconventional geometries. The main goal here is to experimentally and numerically study these geometries to find possible new behaviors due to the material nonlinearity of reinforced concrete with complex geometries. Usually, unconventional geometries result from innovative designs; in general, studies of reinforced concrete structures are performed only on conventional members such as beams, columns, and labs. To achieve the goal, four reinforced-concrete deep beams with geometries not addressed in the literature were tested. The models were numerically analyzed with the Adaptive Micro Truss Model (AMTM), which is the proposed method, to address new geometries. This work also studied the main parameters of the constitutive model of concrete based on a statistical analysis of the finite element (FE) results. To estimate the ultimate loads, FE simulations were performed using the Monte Carlo method. Based on the obtained ultimate loads, a probabilistic distribution was created, and the final ultimate loads were computed.

  • A three-dimensional thermo-hydraulic computer code is developed for simulation of incompressible flows in complex geometries. The computer code employs a body-fitted, nonorthogonal grid system in order to efficiently handle the complex geometries encountered in many engineering applications. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations and the convection term is treated by higher-order bounded schemes. The cell-centered, nonstaggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is avoided by use of momentum interpolation practice. The computer code employs the SIMPLE algorithm for pressure and velocity coupling and the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence for turbulent calculation. The computer code has been tested through application to a variety of test problems and some results are presented in this paper

  • The present work presents the development of a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methodology viable for complex geometries and suitable for the simulation of rod-bundles. The use of LES and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) allows for a deeper analysis of the flow field and the use of stochastical tools in order to obtain additional insight into rod-bundle hydrodynamics. Moreover, traditional steady-state CFD simulations fail to accurately predict distributions of velocity and temperature in rod-bundles when the pitch (P) to diameter (D) ratio P/D is smaller than 1.1 for triangular lattices of cylindrical pins. This deficiency is considered to be due to the failure to predict large-scale coherent structures in the region of the gap. The main features of the code include multi-block capability and the use of the fractional step algorithm. As a Sub-Grid-Scale (SGS) model, a Dynamic Smagorinsky model has been used. The code has been tested on plane channel flow and the flow in annular ducts. The results are in excellent agreement with experiments and previous calculations.

  • Mass transfer experiment by naphthalene sublimation method has great advantages in measurement of local transfer coefficients in the region of a three dimensional flow or for a model of complex geometry, which is considered to be very difficult with conventional heat transfer measurements. Mass transfer data obtained by naphthalene sublimation technique are converted to the heat transfer data through heat/mass transfer analogy. This analogy is valid for a simple or laminar flow, but new insight is needed when applying to a turbulent flow or complex flow such as separation, reattachment and recirculation, The purpose of this research is to investigate how geometries and flow conditions incorporate heat/mass transfer analogy. Mass transfer experiments are performed using naphthalene sublimation technique for a flat plate, a circular cylinder, and rectangular cylinders. And mass transfer data are compared with earlier heat transfer measurements for the same geometries. Usefulness of analogy relation between heat and mass transfer is examined with these results.

  • In order to save time and efforts in generating finite element meshes in irregular houndaries of domains, it is needed to develop an automatic mesh-generator which can hoth promote the accuracy of solutions and reduce the run-time in operating finite ele- ment models. In this study, the advancing front technique of triangular mesh generation and the transforming technique from triangular meshes to quadrilateral meshes were used to de- velop a computer program for the automatic triangular and quadrilateral meshes in the mixed shape. Furthermore, to enhance the quadrilateral mesh quality, the techniques of Laplancian smoothing and interior mesh modification were employed. The mesh genera- tor was applied to evaluate its applicability to irregular and complex geometries such as Nakdong river bay. In has hoen shown that the automatic mesh generator developed is capable of automatically generating meshes for irreguiar and complex geometries with high qualities of meshes and with the simple input data of arbitrarily specified nodal spacing in bound- aries.

  • The development of new techniques for the dynamic measurement of linear viscoelastic properties is an active area of rheometry, and this paper surveys some novel deformation geometries which have been recently reported e.g. oscillating probe-type devices which are imbedded in or placed on the surface of the sample. Small amplitude band-limited pseudorandom noise is used for the displacement signal, with Fourier analysis of the complex waveform of the resistance force yielding the frequency dependent viscoelastic material functions (e.g. storage and loss moduli G", G"). Theoretical calculations of the fundamental equations relating force to displacement and instrument geometry, were carried out with the aid of the correspondence principle of linear viscoelasticity. The rapidity of the tests and flexibility in terms of sample preparation and stiffness mean that this basic technique should find many applications in rheometry. Three examples of oscillatory tests are presented in detail squeeze flow, imbedded needle and concentric sliding cylinder geometries.eometries.

  • The self-assembly of supramolecular dendrimers allows the rapid construction of nanosized structures with regularly ordered features that depend on the shape of the molecules and the relative strength of the intra-and intermolecular interactions. Here we report on a dramatic improvement in the degree of control and selectivity in the orientation of fan-shaped supramolecular molecules over a large area, which has been achieved by confined geometries and applied fields. The order and orientation of supramolecular dendrimers can be controlled by surface anchoring in confined geometries. POM, SEM, TEM, AFM and XRD results show that the molecules form the complicated defect-ordering in the microchannels with different feature sizes. We show that these defect domains are strongly influenced by the boundary and feature size of the surfaces. This technique can be used to create a grain size in the plane of the film that is much larger than that which can be achieved using previously reported soft-material based pattering.
