  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze subject matters opened on Dept of Home Economics Education in Korea and U.S.A. For this study, 17 undergraduate catalog and college course guidelines of Korea and the 15 undergraduate catalog and course guidelines of U.S.A. were collected. Collected materials were compared and analyzed. For this comparision and analysis, classified the subject matters as three steps based on these data. Collected data were analyzed by arithmetic mean, percentage, frequency. The conclusions are as followings ; 1. The number of the Home Economics Education relative subject matters opened in Korea is 10% below, and U.S.A.'s is 20~30%. The ratio of U.S.A. is higher than that of Korea. 2. The domain of clothes & textiles and foods and nutrition is 50% in Korea, So, There is unbalance in Korea. 3. U.S.A. oftened various names of subject matters by characteristics more than in Korea.

  • This study was designed to investigate the teacher belief related to children literacy between Korea and U.S.A. using the quantitative research. The instrument for this study was constructed with 35 Likert-scaled questions in a survey questionnaire. Additionally, this study found that there existed significant difference with 20 questions between Korea and U.S.A. based on teacher's belief related to children's literacy and relationship between teachers who learns the whole language and the scores of teacher beliefs about literacy in the research. Seventy-six teachers who work at early childhood settings in State College, Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap, and Lemont in Central Pennsylvania participated in U.S.A. and ninety-one teachers who work at early childhood setting in Seoul and Pusan in Korea participated in this survey. This research has provided a framework for investigating the teacher beliefs about teaching literacy in order to discover the whole language effect on the system of teacher beliefs. This study focused on teacher beliefs towards the whole language approach between Korea and U.S.A.

  • This study analyzed and standardized the harmful substances of organic compounds(dioxins) in disposable diapers for infant's clothing. Commercial samples obtained from Korea, Japan, America and German were determined by HRGC/HRMS. Experimental Methods were consisted of comparision of extracting solvent, analysis of PCDD/Fs, and analysis of PCDD/Fs of extraction in disposable diaper. The results were as follows. No high TEQ values in TCDD(1), PCDD(0.5) and HxCDD(0.1) were found for commercial disposable diapers from country Korea, Japan, U.S.A and German. In extraction for 6hrs experiments, HpCDD and OCDD were detected in disposable diapers of U1, U2 and G2, respectively. In extraction fur 24hrs experiments, HpCDD, OCDD and OCDF were detected in disposable diapers of J3, U1, U2 and U3. So we need to set standards of measurement for harmful materials contained in textile goods. This will make a safe and comfortable clothing environment for all users, regardless of age.

  • The Purpose of this study is to determine how Korean and United Sates families manage resourcese. Further, socioeconomic and social psychological determinants of frequency of family resoures management will be investigated for each country. Comparision of results well be made to find similarities and differences between Korea and the U.S. Most studies of family resource management have used urban samples, so this study adds to understanding of another segment of the populations. Family resource management variables, as dependent variables, were measured by asking respondents how often they used a variety of wasys to handle finances and time. Independent variables were : (a) total household income, (b) respondents education, (c) respondents ages, (d) householder size, (e) family adaptability, (f) family cohesion, and (g) interpersonal communications. Data for the Korean sample were collected in rural areas of South Korea during summer 1989, U.S. data were collected in two counties of Illinois. The data used in this study include 473 Korean samples and 301 U.S. families. In both samples, the respondent was the financial manager, the person who usually handled the finances and paid the bills. The data were analyzed by frequencys, t-test, and multiple regression analysis methods. As a results, U.S. respondents tended to engage in family resource management more frequently than Korean respondents. This could be attributed to a longer history of consumer education and financial management education taught in the public schools and through the Cooperative Extension Service in the U.S. Social-psycological variables were significant predictors of frequency of family financial management in both samples. the differences in both samples are that, in Korea, frequency of family financial management increased as household size and educational years increased, however, in the United States, the relationships of these variables were not significant. Some similarities and differences were found in Korea and the U.S. families, and this results represents that interpersonal communications are important determinants, even in different cultures. One hadn, the difference of socio-cultural factors result as the difference of some statisical differences. Findings from this study have important implications for research and education, and can be applicated to study of family resource management in other rural areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare in the U.S. and Korea regarding adult children's quality of relationship and care provision for their elderly parents. The study sample consist of 320 adult children in the U.S. and 554 adult children in Korea with at least one parent living. The U.S. study sample is drawn from the State of California, and the Korean sample is drawn from Gyeongsangnamdo Province. The study result shows that the U.S adult children score higher than the Korean adult children in the quality of relationship measure for their elderly parents. And Korean adult children score higher than the U.S. adult children in the care provision measure for their elderly parents. It is found that the most significant factor influencing American adult children's care provision is caregiving attitude for elderly parents, while for Korean adult children, it is the quality of the relationship between adult children and elderly parents. This study results can serve as a foundation for understanding the U.S. and Korean differences regarding adult children's support for their elderly parents and for providing a solution to caregiving issues for elderly parents.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the methods of estimation, comparing U.S. SCS method and $\Phi$-index with effective rainfall. And also comparision was made among SCS method, Chow method and Mockus method as to the peak discharge of design storm hydrograph by small river basin. Hydrological data of the Shin river basin which was used in this study and the results of study are as follow; 1) As a result of applying the SCS method to determine the effective rainfall out of total rainfall, it turned out that the everage CN of the basin as obtained by the analysis of hydrologic soil-cover complex was varied as follows; AMC-I was 27.9%, AMC-II 16.4%, AMC-III 8.1% less than the value given by SC method using discharge measurement. 2) The comparision of effective rainfall by the ungaged SCS method with that of gauged $\Phi$-index method showed that the $\Phi$-index method showed that the $\Phi$-index method gives large value by 4.7% to those given by hydrograph. The result of analysis by the SCS method resulted in great difference from discharge measurement. 3) The comparision of SCS method, Chow method, and Mockus method showed that dimensionless hydrograph of SCS method and Chow method were close to the peak discharge of the gauged unit hydrograph, while the other methods gave far different results. 4) Attempts were made, for a better adaptation to the Shin river basin, to introduce lag time formula constant of dimensionless hydrograph of the SCS method by using the peak discharge of the gauged flow hydrograph.

  • Purpose - Recently, the Korean government is seeking to internationalize KRW and reduce its heavy reliance on the U.S. dollar and better cope with risks from external turbulence. However, there has been too little study on this subject in comparision with its importance. The main objective of the paper is to distinguish the descrete stages of the KRW internationalization and recognize the costs and benefits of each stage. Research design, data, methodology - In order to achieve its goal, this study accomplishes a formal policy analysis based on potential factors of currency internationalization and an examination of legal practices in relation to Foreign Exchange Transaction Regulation (the Regulation). Results - This study found that securing monetary policy may not be easy under liberalized capital account for a small open economy like Korea in view of the trillema. In addition, the inherent ambiguity of the Regulation may increase the costs of KRW internationalization. Conclusions-This study revealed the negative system for the control of foreign exchange of the Korean government. The excessive regulatory restrictions on foreign exchange may hinder the process of KRW internationalization. Some legal and policy reforms are needed to improve related regulation and infrastructure.
