There have been studies about dog’s personality and behavior, which is helpful to breed dogs as guide or companion. In this study, a questionnaire was developed using 54 Jindo dogs, which considered ten items about aggressiveness and sociability. The scores were analyzed by principle component analysis (PCA), after accounting for four variables: age, gender, growing place, and coat-colors. Our results from the PCA indicated three principle components, which classified ‘aggressiveness’, ‘sociability’ and unknown factor. The four variables did not significantly affect aggressiveness(P>0.05). However, there was a relationship between coat-color and sociability, i.e., the Jindo dogs with fawn color were more sociable than the white ones(P<0.1).
To prepare for the threat of a future epidemic in the post-COVID-19 era, research based on the one-health concept (i.e., the health of humans, animals, and the environment as "one") is essential. Cross-species infections are being identified as a result of the high infection rate and viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in humans. The possibility of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from humans to mink has been determined. In addition, the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from humans to cats through contact has been considered possible. The data so far show that livestock and poultry are less likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2. However, if infections are established through a new mutation, the resulting diseases are expected to have enormous ripple effects on various fields, such as human food security, the economy, and trade. In addition, there are concerns about the endemic prospect of SARS-CoV-2 and the high accessibility of companion animals. This is because the evolution of the virus likely occurs in animal hosts. Once SARS-CoV-2 is established in other species, they might serve as intermediate hosts for the re-emergence of the virus in the human population. Thus, it is necessary to ensure a rapid response to future outbreaks by accumulating research data on the animal infection of SARS-CoV-2. These data can have implications for the development of animal models for vaccines and therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, in this study, epidemiological reviews were analyzed, and response strategies against SARS-CoV-2 infection in animals were presented using the One-health approach.
This study aimed to see if as companion animals living with human beings, dogs could provide emotional stability or play a therapeutic role for human beings. Of 12 middle school boys as victims of school violence, 6 were assigned to the experimental group that was provided with an animal-assisted therapy program over a total of 12 sections, one section per week, 60 minutes per section, between September and November 2011, followed by post-test 1 and, one month later, post-test 2. In the experimental composition, the remaining 6 boys were assigned to the comparison group that was allowed to read freely. Analysis was performed by using the scales of depression and self-esteem, and the results showed that the experimental group provided with the animal-assisted therapy program generated more significant therapeutic effects than the comparison group. The therapeutic effects were found to persist one month after the completion of the program. Therefore, it is believed that sensitive adolescents who suffer from depression or have lost self-esteem because of school violence can significantly benefit from an animal-assisted therapy program by reducing the recovery time or by getting lots of help with emotional stability. Further research on the basis of this study is expected to help adolescents with emotional therapy in other areas.

The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of gram-negative bacteria isolated from companion animals with sepsis, and to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the isolates. Bacterial pathogens were isolated from specimens of dogs and cats submitted to National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service between 2008 and 2009. A total of 44 gram-negative pathogens were isolated from necropsied organs. The most common isolates were E. coli (n = 33), K. pneumoniae (n = 4) and B. bronchiseptica (n = 4). Most of gram-negative isolates were susceptible to ceftiofur (68.2%), colistin (84.1%), florfenicol (84.1%) and spectinomycin (61.4%). Most of those were resistant to ampicillin (77.3%), erythromycin (86.4%), flumequine (65.9%), lincomycin (97.7%), oxytetracycline (61.4%), penicillin (100%), streptomycin (63.6%), spiramycin (97.7%), sulfamethoxazole (90.9%), tylosin (97.7%) and tiamulin (100%). In conclusion, colistin and florfenicol could be useful against sepsis due to gram-negative bacteria.
This study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial resistance pattern and distribution of resistance gene in 44 Enterobacteriaceae and 21 Pseudomonas (P) aeruginosa isolated from hospitalized dogs and cats in animal hospital from 2010 to 2011 in Daegu. Among Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia (E) coli was highly resistant to ampicillin (56.7%), followed by tetracycline (53.3%), cephalothin, streptomycine, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, gentamicin and norfloxacin (40.0~43.3%). The remaining isolates of Enterobacteriaceae had high resistance to ampicillin (64.3%) and streptomycin (42.9%). Whereas, P. aeruginosa was low resistant to all antimicrobials tested (less than 15%). int I 1 gene was detected in 20 (57.1%) of 35 antimicrobial resistant Enterobacteriaceae and 2 (9.5%) of 21 P. aeruginosa., but int I 2 gene was not detected in all isolates. The eight resistance genes were found either alone or combination with other gene (s): $bla_{TEM}$, aadA, strA-strB, clmA, tetA, tetB, sul I and sul II. About 78% of integron-positive isolates were resistance to more than four antimicrobial agents. The findings suggest that class I integrons are widely distributed in E. coli among Enterobacteriaceae from dogs and cats and multi-drug resistance related to the presence of class I integrons. The prudent use of antimicrobials and continuous monitoring for companion animals are required.
The purpose of this study is to establish the analgesic effects of electroacupuncture for Korean native goat. Electroacupuncture was applied to the 6 Korean native goats. In 3 of them, rumenotomy was performed, and in the other 3, laparotomy was done. The analgesic induction time was 15 to 30 minutes. The acupoints used were Tian-ping (Celestial Peace, GV-5), Bai-hui (Hundred Meetings, GV-20), left 13th thoracic nerve and left 3rd lumbar nerve. Electroacupuncture was performed in lateral recumbency. Needles were inserted 1-2 cm deep, and connected to the electroacupuncture apparatus. The electrical stimulation condition was 30 Hz and 2-6 volts. Initially, the voltage of analgesia mode was maximized in each channel. And, the output was slowly reduced to the critical point that goats could tolerate without obvious discomfort or pain. Surgical operation was done successfully under electroacupuncture analgesia in 6 Korean native goats. In addition, the changes of temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate were studied during acupuncture analgesia. For 3 months after surgery, no experimental animals showed clinical problem in 6 Korean native goats.

Microorganism residing in the gut has been known to have important roles in the animal body. Microbes and host microenvironment are highly related with host's health including energy metabolism and immune system. Moreover, it reported that gut microbiome is correlated with diseases like obesity in human and dogs. There have been many studies to identify and characterize microbes and their genes in human body. However, there was little information of microbiome in companion animals. Here, we investigated microbiota communities in feaces from twenty - four Beagles (aged 2 years old) and analyzed the taxonomy profile using metagenomics to study the difference among gut microbiome based on body condition score (BCS). gDNA was isolated from feaces, sequenced and clustered. Taxonomy profiling was performed based on the NCBI database. BCS was evaluated once a week according to the description provided by World Small Animal Veterinary Association. Firmicutes phylum was the most abundant followed by Bacteroidetes, Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. That main microbiota in gut were differently distributed based on the BCS. Fusobacteria has been known to be associated with colon cancer in human. Interestingly, Fusobacteria was in the third level from the top in healthy dog's gut microbiome. In addition, Fusobacteria was especially higher in overweight dogs which had 6 scales of BCS. Species Fusobacterium perfoetens was also more abundant when dogs were in BCS 6. It implied that F. perfoetens would be positively related with overweight in dogs. These finding would contribute to further studies of gut microbiome and their functions to improve dog's diets and health condition.
Since wireless communication cost is relatively expensive, the mobile games using cellular phones or PDAs are mostly played after being downloaded unlike more updated types of phone-to-phone or online games. In particular, the upbringing games, in which garners foster virtual companion animals or vegetables as their avata, have been spotlighted. It is essential to supply variety of items for upbringing avatas. However, due to diverse tastes for avatas and limited storage of mobile terminals, game manias must download their desired items from homepages. In addition, game developers must inform users through SMS messages whenever a new item is created. To do so, they must link WEB server and WAP server to Call Back URL or ARS. This paper proposed a linkage method suitable for JAVA-based mobile phone operating system. The proposed method will consequently increase life cycle of a game and reinforce profitability.
Oral malodor in companion animals is noticed by owners at first and it makes owners unpleasant. Therefore oral malodor affects the relationship between pet and owner. Oral malodor is produced by some putrefactive bacteria which putrefy proteins to volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) such as methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide and dimethyl sulfide in the food remnants. And oral malodor is mostly consisted with these VSC. On oral examinations in dogs with oral malodor, it is common that plaque and calculus index were increased than normal dogs'. But organoleptic method is subjective to evaluate halitosis, in this study we measured VSC using organoleptic method and portable sulfide monitor to clarify the relationship between halitosis and periodontal disease in dogs with halitosis. And we found that plaque index and calculus index were significantly related with VSC (P<0.05, P<0.05) in measurement using Halimeter. However there was not significant relationship between gingivitis index and VSC. In conclusion, there was the significant, positive relationship between periodontal disease and halitosis.

Background: Although there are growing demands for stem cell-based therapy for companion animals in various diseases, a few clinical trials have been reported. Moreover, most of them are the results from only one or a few times of stem cell injection. Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe a long-term treatment with allogeneic adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) in a dog with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is a rare canine disease. Methods: The dog with RA received intravascular injection of allogeneic ASCs derived from two healthy donors once a month for 11 months. To assess therapeutic effects of ASCs, orthopedic examination and clinical evaluation was performed. Cytokines of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in the plasma were measured using ELISA analysis. Results: Despite this repeated and long-term administration of allogeneic ASCs, there were no side effects such as immunorejection responses or cell toxicity. The orthopedic examination score for the dog decreased after ASCs treatment, and the clinical condition of the dog and owner's satisfaction were very good Conclusions: Although ASCs has been suggested as one of the options for RA treatment because of its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive functions, it has never been used to treat RA in dogs. The present report describes a case of canine RA treated with allogeneic ASCs for long-term in which the dog showed clinical improvement without adverse effects.
