ON $\varepsilon$-BIRKHOFF ORTHOGONALITY AND $\varepsilon$-NEAR BEST APPROXIMATION

  • In this Paper, the notion of $\varepsilon$-Birkhoff orthogonality introduced by Dragomir [An. Univ. Timisoara Ser. Stiint. Mat. 29(1991), no. 1, 51-58] in normed linear spaces has been extended to metric linear spaces and a decomposition theorem has been proved. Some results of Kainen, Kurkova and Vogt [J. Approx. Theory 105 (2000), no. 2, 252-262] proved on e-near best approximation in normed linear spaces have also been extended to metric linear spaces. It is shown that if (X, d) is a convex metric linear space which is pseudo strictly convex and M a boundedly compact closed subset of X such that for each $\varepsilon$>0 there exists a continuous $\varepsilon$-near best approximation $\phi$ : X → M of X by M then M is a chebyshev set .

A Case Study of Space Utilization on Compact Houses in Japan to build Compact-but-effective Houses in Korea (강소주택 실효성 논의를 위한 일본 소형주택 공간 활용 사례 분석)

  • The objective of this study is to find a possible application of small space utilization of GangSo Housing, so called compact-but-effective housing, through analyzing that of Japanese small housing. We analyze openness of view and flexibility of spaces divided by the physical and architectural aspects as first component and the psychological and interior space aspects as second component. The results showed that Japanese small houses have various unit plan compared to uniformity of Korean houses. Openness of view in Japanese small housing is accomplished by letting in light from the outside using position and shape of the window, looking more spacious using courtyard, void spaces, or sliding door hanging from the ceiling, and creating deception of view using floor-wall plan and appropriate materials. Flexibility of spaces is achieved by combination of first and second components, multipurpose of space and furniture, and variety of storage methods. It is necessary to improve spatial efficiency with consideration of volume-metric planing rather than flat-plane and develop various unit plans to meet residents' needs and demands on compact-but-effective houses.

EXPANDING MEASURES FOR HOMEOMORPHISMS WITH EVENTUALLY SHADOWING PROPERTY

  • In this paper we present a measurable version of the Smale's spectral decomposition theorem for homeomorphisms on compact metric spaces. More precisely, we prove that if a homeomorphism f on a compact metric space X is invariantly measure expanding on its chain recurrent set CR(f) and has the eventually shadowing property on CR(f), then f has the spectral decomposition. Moreover we show that f is invariantly measure expanding on X if and only if its restriction on CR(f) is invariantly measure expanding. Using this, we characterize the measure expanding diffeomorphisms on compact smooth manifolds via the notion of Ω-stability.

  • It is well-known that the most interesting non-integrable almost Hermitian manifold are the nearly Kaehlerian manifolds ([2] and [3]), and that there exists a complex but not a Kaehlerian structure on Riemannian product manifolds of two normal contact manifolds [4]. The purpose of the present paper is to study nearly Kaehlerian product manifolds of two almost contact metric manifolds and investigate the geometrical structures of these manifolds. Unless otherwise stated, we shall always assume that manifolds and quantities are differentiable of class $C^{\infty}$. In Paragraph 1, we give brief discussions of almost contact metric manifolds and their Riemannian product manifolds. In paragraph 2, we investigate the perfect conditions for Riemannian product manifolds of two almost contact metric manifolds to be nearly Kaehlerian and the non-existence of a nearly Kaehlerian product manifold of contact metric manifolds. Paragraph 3 will be devoted to a proof of the following; A conformally flat compact nearly Kaehlerian product manifold of two almost contact metric manifolds is isomatric to a Riemannian product manifold of a complex projective space and a flat Kaehlerian manifold..

ERGODIC SHADOWING, $\underline{d}$-SHADOWING AND EVENTUAL SHADOWING IN TOPOLOGICAL SPACES

  • We define the notions of ergodic shadowing property, $\underline{d}$-shadowing property and eventual shadowing property in terms of the topology of the phase space. Secondly we define these notions in terms of the compatible uniformity of the phase space. When the phase space is a compact Hausdorff space, we establish the equivalence of the corresponding definitions of the topological approach and the uniformity approach. In case the phase space is a compact metric space, the notions of ergodic shadowing property, $\underline{d}$-shadowing property and eventual shadowing property defined in terms of topology and uniformity are equivalent to their respective standard definitions.

  • It has been conjectured that, on a compact 3-dimensional orientable manifold, a critical point of the total scalar curvature restricted to the space of constant scalar curvature metrics of unit volume is Einstein. In this paper we prove this conjecture under a condition that ker $s^{\prime}^*_g{\neq}0$, which generalizes the previous partial results.

  • Let X be a compact metric space, B be a unital commutative Banach algebra and ${\alpha}{\in}(0,1]$. In this paper, we first define the vector-valued (B-valued) ${\alpha}$-Lipschitz operator algebra $Lip_{\alpha}$ (X, B) and then study its structure and characterize of its maximal ideal space.

  • On a compact n-dimensional manifold M, it has been conjectured that a critical point metric of the total scalar curvature, restricted to the space of metrics with constant scalar curvature of volume 1, should be Einstein. The purpose of the present paper is to prove that a 3-dimensional manifold (M,g) is isometric to a standard sphere if ker $s^*_g{{\neq}}0$ and there is a lower Ricci curvature bound. We also study the structure of a compact oriented stable minimal surface in M.

  • In this paper we study the preservation of various notions of expansivity in discrete dynamical systems and the induced map for n-fold symmetric products and hyperspaces. Then we give a characterization of a compact metric space admitting hyper N-expansive homeomorphisms via the topological dimension. More precisely, we show that C0-generically, any homeomorphism on a compact manifold is not hyper N-expansive for any N ∈ ℕ. Also we give some examples to illustrate our results.
