  • As a study on ballistic protection performance of a weapon system that is used in combat simulation, this paper aims to propose an improvement effect of the ballistic protection performance varying with incident angle of a bullet. For this, live-fire ballistic tests were performed to determine either complete penetration(CP) and partial penetration(PP) of three types of general armor plates made of uniformly rolled steel plates against a small caliber threat using 5.45 mm bullets with various speed. The major test parameter was the material of the weapon system and incident angle of the bullet with the target. Further, to quantitatively analyze the ballistic protection performance, three existing measurement methods were used for ballistic limit velocity. The test results showed that the ballistic protection performance with the incident angle of 30 degrees was 4% to 14% varying with the material of the armor plates greater than that of 0 degrees, which was approximately 1.1 times the performance improvement on average when compared to the conventional angle of incidence of the 0 degree. Those test results are expected to contribute to developing a more realistic combat simulation addressing the parameter improving the ballistic protection performance of an armor plate.

  • In recent years, naval vessels have been developed to fulfill a variety of missions by being equipped with various cutting-edge equipment and ICT technologies. One of the main missions of Korean naval vessels is anti-ballistic missile warfare to defend key units and areas against the growing threat of ballistic missiles. Because the process of detection and interception is too complex and the cost of failure is much high, a lot of preparation is required to effectively conduct anti-ballistic missile warfare. This paper describes the development of a simulation model of anti-ballistic missile warfare with combat systems and equipment to be installed on future naval vessels. In particular, the DEVS formalism providing a modular and hierarchical modeling manner was applied to the simulation model, which can be utilized to efficiently represent various anti-ballistic missile warfare situations. In the simulation results presented, experiments were conducted to analyze the effectiveness of the model for effective detection resource management in anti-ballistic missile warfare. This study is expected to be utilized as a variety of analysis tools necessary to determine the optimal deployment and configuration of combat resources and operational tactics required for effective anti-ballistic missile warfare of ships in the future.

  • As naval warfare changes to composite warfare that includes simultaneous engagements against surface, underwater, and air enemies, performance and tactical analysis are required to respond to naval warfare. In particular, for practical analysis of composite warfare, it is necessary to study engagement simulations that can appropriately utilize the limited performance resources of the detection system. This paper proposes a DEVS (Discrete Event Systems Specifications)-based simulation model for composite warfare analysis. The proposed model contains generalized models of combat platforms and armed objects to simulate various complex warfare situations. In addition, we propose a detection performance allocation algorithm that can be applied to a detection system model, considering the characteristics of composite warfare in which missions must be performed using limited detection resources. We experimented with the effectiveness of composite warfare according to the strength of the detection system's resource allocation, the enemy force's size, and the friendly force's departure location. The simulation results showed the effect of the resource allocation function on engagement time and success. Our model will be used as an engineering basis for analyzing the tactics of warships in various complex warfare situations in the future.

  • Desertification has been expanding with a remarkable speed across the Northeast Asia. Desertification in Northeast Asia significantly influences Korea's economy and environmental health conditions in recent years. For these reasons, a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Korea have carried out the reforestation projects to combat desertification in China and Mongolia. Several tree plantation projects were implemented in Mongolia and China. The objective of this study was to analyze and evaluate the performance of tree plantation aid projects carried out by Korean NGOs in Mongolia. The performance of tree plantation projects was examined through effectiveness, efficiency, equity and responsiveness of those projects. The performance was analyzed with the survival rate of planted trees and planting cost, the recognitions of Mongolian people. The analysis of the performance showed that the tree plantation cooperation projects carried out by Korean NGOs in Mongolia had comparatively high performance from a larger point of view. Especially, effectiveness and responsiveness of their projects were highly marked in spite of all the difficulties of carrying out the tree plantation. Such a high effectiveness represented the relatively higher survival rates of trees and Mongolian's positive recognition of plantation projects. Furthermore, the responsiveness also turned out to be high with a great satisfaction of the Mongolian people for plantation projects conducted by the Korean NGOs. Survey results indicated that the efficiency and equity of the projects would be increased by promoting the cooperation projects for tree planting throughout Mongolia with reinforcing infrastructures. By comparison between Korean NGOs and Mongolian Government plantation projects, confirmed the importance of sustained financial support and maintenance activities in the plantation sites.

  • In general, credibility for some analysis results is very important to most decision makers. Especially, it is even more critical for military commander to choose the best course of action by using the simulation results when he want to decide to allocate his available weapon system assets. Therefore, improving the credibility of simulation output is one of the key issues in military research fields. In this paper, we proposed a new simulation framework to improve the credibility of weapon's effectiveness analysis results. Multi-agent based simulation tool is applied and compare current process to the proposed framework. We also showed an example case when a communication repeaters are installed to expand the commanding area scope. The example clearly tells why this new simulation framework is more efficient and improve the credibility of simulation results.

  • This study emphasizes the essential need in the military for effective measurement and monitoring of soldiers' physical fitness, health, and exercise capabilities to enhance both their overall fitness and combat effectiveness. The effective assessment of physical fitness is considered a core element of management, aligning with principles of modern management. Particularly, preparing soldiers with robust physical fitness is deemed crucial for adapting to dynamic changes on the battlefield. In this research, the RFM (Recency, Frequency, Monetary) customer analysis and clustering methods, validated in e-commerce, are introduced as a basis for applying an AI-driven customer analysis approach to assess military personnel fitness. To achieve this, the study explores the incorporation of the RSC (Reveal, Sustainable, Control) analysis model. This model aims to effectively categorize and monitor military personnel fitness. The application of the RFM technique in the RSC analysis model quantifies and models military fitness, fostering continuous improvement and seeking strategies to enhance the effectiveness of fitness management. Through these methods, the study develops an AI customer analysis technique applied to the RSC clustering analysis method for improving and sustaining military personnel fitness.

  • ROK Navy Landing Ship Fast(LSF-II) is equipped with special equipment that is not compatible with other combat ships due to special missions. So there are almost no maintenance capabilities except for simple repair parts replacement and maintenance parts. The researcher determined that the way to solve these problems was to apply Performance Based Logistics (PBL), and reviewed the cases of PBL applications abroad and domestically. To confirm the current maintenance capability, we visited LSF-II operation unit to identify maintenance capabilities for each mounted equipment, and interviews with operators and maintenance practitioners confirmed the limitations of outsourcing maintenance and the need to apply PBL. In order to analyze the effect of PBL application, the measure of effectiveness and measure of performance were selected based on the opinions of LSF-II operation/maintenance practitioners and PBL experts and the practical experience of this researcher. A survey was conducted on operation/maintenance practitioners and professional personnel. Based on the survey results, the effect of applying PBL was analyzed using the AHP technique, and an efficient PBL application plan was proposed for LSF-II.

  • Under combat simulation environment when inputting the detection performance data of the real system into the simulated object the given data affects the simulation analysis result. ACQUIRE-Target Task Performance Metric (TTPM)-Target Angular Size (TAS) model is used as a target acquisition model to simulate the detection ability of entities in the main combat simulation tool. This model estimates the decomposition curve of the object sensor and output the detection distance according to the target type. However, it is not easy to apply the performance of the new detection object that the user wants to input to the target acquisition model. Users want to input the detection distance into the target acquisition model, but the target acquisition model requires sensor decomposition curve data according to encounter conditions. In this paper, we propose a method of inversely deriving the sensor decomposition curve data of the target acquisition model by taking the detection distance to the target as an input. Here, the sensor decomposition curve data simultaneously satisfies each detection distance for three types of targets: personnel, ground vehicles, and aircraft. Finally, the detection distance of various reconnaissance equipment is applied to the detection object, and the detection effect according to the reconnaissance equipment is analyzed.
