Challenges Faced by a Mathematically Strong Student Intransferring his Success in Mathematics to Statistics: A Case Study

  • This study qualitatively investigates the nature of the challenges that a student who is highly successful in mathematics faces in learning college-level elementary statistics. The study draws on the constructs of eagerness, flexibility and willingness to characterize the necessary disposition for critical thinking that is essential in learning statistics. The case study is based on data collected through a survey assessment and a follow-up interview with a mathematics major enrolled in an elementary college statistics course at the time of the study. The qualitative analysis relies on the student's verbal descriptions of the challenges he was experiencing in the course. The findings suggest that while his strong inclination towards inquisitive learning and strong understanding of mathematical concepts supported this student's mathematics learning, the same characteristics might have been causing him difficulties in learning college-level elementary statistics.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the correlation among scores of the mathematics B-type grade of College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT), scores of Mathematics Level Assessment(MLA) and written test scores of Basic Mathematics Subject(BMS) made by students. Especially, we examined the relationship between CSAT grade with results of MLA and results of BMS through survey of students who changed their grades and learned about reasons. Paying Attention to Students and Promoting Students' Mathematics Understanding

  • Promoting students' mathematics understanding is an important research theme in mathematics education. According to general theories of learning, mathematics understanding is close to active learning or significant learning. Thus, if a teacher wants to promote his/her students' mathematics understanding, he/she should pay attention to the students so that the students' thinking is in active situation. In the first part of this paper, some mathematics teachers' ideas about paying attention to their students in Chinese high school are given by questionnaire and interview. In the second part of this paper, we give some teaching episodes about how experienced mathematics teachers promote their students' mathematics understanding based on paying attention on them.

Investigation and Analysis of Mathematics Application Ability of Student of Senior One

  • Students' mathematics application ability is a hot spot which mathematics education pays attention. So, I have carried on the test of mathematics application and the questionnaire survey to student of Senior One of the two middle schools. Through the test and the investigation, I discover that the level of the students' mathematics application ability is not high. To the simple application question, the difference of the male and the female is not big, but to the difficult application question, the male and the female has the remarkable difference. The students' lack of flexible and the original cognition monitoring ability in mathematics application process are afraid of studying mathematics application since childhood and lack of the training of this aspect. They thought mathematics foundation and reading understood ability is the key of mathematics application. Through analysis result of investigation, this paper proposed the way to raise mathematics application ability of students.

  • In this paper, we performed research about the successful and unsuccessful factors for college math education. In addition, on the basis of the results from the comparative study on the Korean/foreign students' attitude toward the role of computers in math study, we tried to find out the ways to reflect the results on college math education. As the ways to improve college math education we propose that the professors should emphasize the significance of math and explain the successful and unsuccessful factors for math learning during the initial period of each semester. Furthermore, the professors should recognize the importance of computers in math study and ask for the university authority's support to provide necessary softwares and establish computer labs.

Impact of Inquiry-Based Teaching on Student Attitude toward Mathematics

  • Large Midwest university faculty members proposed the Science and Technology Enhancement Program Project (STEP) to improve students' learning in the secondary mathematics classroom using modules of inquiry-based teaching. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the STEP Project on students' attitude toward mathematics. Hierarchical linear models (HLM) were used to evaluate the impact of the STEP Project. The sample group for the study was 130 ninth grade students enrolled in Integrated Algebra I in a large urban school district. The school was one of eight secondary schools that participated in the STEP Project. The classes in the treatment group were three of five classes ordered in terms of the highest, middle, and lowest mean GPA. The control group consisted of two other middle GPA classes. The classes had an average of 25 students. Teachers who previously had been involved in the STEP Project taught all treatment and control classes. The inquiry-based teaching activities provided by the project were confined to the treatment classes. The survey measuring students' attitudes toward mathematics were obtained for both groups of students. The inquiry-based teaching affected students' attitudes toward mathematics (p < 0.07, ES = 3.07). Especially, students who had preexisting low attitudes toward mathematics were significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.02, ES = 0.02), while the treatment positively affected African American students overall at p < 0.08 (ES = 0.58).

  • This study has its purpose to diversify teaching and evaluation for college mathematics, moreover increasing students loaming ability, who dislike or have lower ability to study. Cooperation, level learning and various evaluation make students better reaction in 1999 first term than in 1996 first term. Also we hope more researches for this field could be syudied.

  • Problem/Project based learning(PBL) is a student-centered teaching method in which students collaboratively solve problems and reflect their experiences. According to the results of PBL study and the experiences of the authors in PBL instruction, this paper introduced the necessities, output and significance of learning process PBL evaluation method and sums up our PBL evaluation process. The issue of appropriate and fair evaluation has been raised in untact (non-contact) university mathematics education due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) of the year 2020. To this end, when we had the course on for the summer semester held at S University in the summer of 2020. To ensure the fairness in evaluation and to improve the quality of our college math education, the PBL evaluation method was fully adapted. As a result, most of the students who took the lecture have learned a wide range of related knowledge without a single exception, and students agreed it is an ideal, fair, rational, and effective evaluation method applicable to other online courses in the era of untact education. This case was summarized in detail and introduced in this paper.

  • Given a set ${\Omega}$, the notion of ${\Omega}-fuzzy$ ideals in a near-ring is introduced, and related properties are investigated. Using fuzzy ideals, ${\Omega}-fuzzy$ ideals are described. Conversely, fuzzy ideals are constructed by using ${\Omega}-fuzzy$ ideals.
