This work deals with the study of buckling and post buckling characteristics of laminated composite plates with and without localized regions of damage. The need of a detailed study on Finite Element Analysis of buckling and post buckling of laminated composite structures considering various aspects enhances the interest among researchers. Mathematical formulation is developed for damaged composite plates using a finite element technique based on Inverse Hyperbolic Shear Deformation Theory. This theory satisfies zero transverse shear stresses conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate and provides a non-linear transverse shear stress distribution. Damage modeling is done using an anisotropic damage formulation, which is based on the concept of stiffness change. The structural elements are subjected to in-plane loading. The computer program is developed in MATLAB environment. The numerical results are presented after through validation of developed finite element code. The effect of damage on buckling and post buckling has been carried out for various parameters such as amount of percentage of damaged area, damage intensity, etc. The results show that the presence of internal flaws will significantly affect the buckling characteristics of laminated composite plates. The outcomes and remarks from this work will assist to address some key issues concerning composite structures.
The paper describes a study about effects of upstream hills on design wind loads using two mathematical approaches: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Artificial Neural Network (NN for short). For this purpose CFD and NN tools have been developed using an object-oriented approach and C++ programming language. The CFD tool consists of solving the Reynolds time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model using body-fitted nearly-orthogonal coordinate system. Subsequently, design wind load parameters such as speed-up ratio values have been generated for a wide spectrum of two-dimensional hill geometries that includes isolated and multiple steep and shallow hills. Ground roughness effect has also been considered. Such CFD solutions, however, normally require among other things ample computational time, background knowledge and high-capacity hardware. To assist the enduser, an easier, faster and more inexpensive NN model trained with the CFD-generated data is proposed in this paper. Prior to using the CFD data for training purposes, extensive validation work has been carried out by comparing with boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) data. The CFD trained NN (CFD-NN) has produced speed-up ratio values for cases such as multiple hills that are not covered by wind design standards such as the Commentaries of the National Building Code of Canada (1995). The CFD-NN results compare well with BLWT data available in literature and the proposed approach requires fewer resources compared to running BLWT experiments.
Spray impingement and fuel film formation models were developed and incorporated into the computational fluid dynamics code. STAR-CD. The spray/wall interaction process was modeled by considering the change of behaviour with surface temperature conditions and the fuel film formation. We divided the behaviour of fuel droplets after impingement into rebound, spread and splash using the Weber number and the parameter K. The Spray impingement model accounts for mass conservation, energy conservation and heat transfer to the impinging droplets. The fuel film formation model was developed by integrating the continuity, Navier-Stokes and energy equations along the direction of fuel film thickness. Validation of the models was conducted using previous diesel spray experimental data and the present experimental results for the gasoline spray impingement. In all the cases, the prediction compared reasonably well with the experimental results. The spray impingement and fuel film formation models have been applied to the spray/wall impingement in high speed direct injection diesel engines.

One of the important severe accident management measures in the Light Water Reactors is water injection to the reactor core. The related phenomena are investigated by performing experiments and computer simulations. One of the most widely known is the QUENCH test-program. A number of analyses on QUENCH tests have also been performed by different computer codes for code validation and improvements. Unfortunately, any deterministic computer simulation is not free from the uncertainties. To receive the realistic calculation results, the best estimate computer codes should be used for the calculation with combination of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of calculation results. In this article, the QUENCH-03 and QUENCH-06 experiments are modelled using ASTEC and RELAP/SCDAPSIM codes. For the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, SUSA3.5 and SUNSET tools were used. The article demonstrates that applying the best estimate approach, it is possible to develop basic QUENCH input deck and to develop the two sets of input parameters, covering maximal and minimal ranges of uncertainties. These allow simulating different (but with the same nature) tests, receiving calculation results with the evaluated range of uncertainties.
The effect of an increasing percentage of nanofiller (glass cenosphere) with Glass/Epoxy hybrid composite curved panels modeled mathematically using the multiscale concept and subsequent numerical eigenvalues of different geometrical configurations (cylindrical, spherical, elliptical, hyperboloid and flat) predicted in this research article. The numerical model of Glass/Epoxy/Cenosphere is derived using the higher-order polynomial type of kinematic theory in association with isoparametric finite element technique. The multiscale mathematical model utilized for the customized computer code for the evaluation of the frequency data. The numerical model validation and consistency verified with experimental frequency data and convergence test including the experimental elastic properties. The experimental frequencies of the multiscale nano filler-reinforced composite are recorded through the impact hammer frequency test rig including CDAQ-9178 (National Instruments) and LABVIEW virtual programming. Finally, the nano cenosphere filler percentage and different design associated geometrical parameters on the natural frequency data of hybrid composite structural configurations are illustrated through a series of numerical examples.
A number of desirable characteristics concerning excellent durability, aesthetics, recyclability, high ductility and fire resistance have made stainless steel a preferred option in engineering practice. However, the relatively high initial cost has greatly restricted the application of stainless steel as a major structural material in general construction. This drawback can be partially overcome by introducing composite stainless steel-concrete structures, which provides a cost-efficient and sustainable solution for future stainless steel construction. This paper presents a preliminary numerical study on stainless steel-concrete composite beam-to-column joints with bolted flush endplates. In order to ensure a consistent corrosion resistance within the whole structural system, all structural steel components were designed with austenitic stainless steel, including beams, columns, endplates, bolts, reinforcing bars and shear connectors. A finite element model was developed using ABAQUS software for composite beam-to-column joints under monotonic and symmetric hogging moments, while validation was performed based on independent test results. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to investigate the effects of several critical factors on the behaviour of composite stainless steel joints. Finally, comparisons were made between the numerical results and the predictions by current design codes regarding the plastic moment capacity and the rotational stiffness of the joints. It was concluded that the present codes of practice generally overestimate the rotational stiffness and underestimate the plastic moment resistance of stainless steel-concrete composite joints.
The present paper is concerned with the design of a proper patch actuator network in order to track a desired displacement of the sidewalls of a one-storey frame structure; both, for the static and the dynamic case. Weights for each patch of the actuator network found in our previous work were based on beam theory; in the present paper a refinement of these weights by modeling the sidewalls of the frame structure as thin plates is presented. For the sake of calculating the refined weights approximate solutions of the plate equations are calculated by an extended Galerkin method. The solutions based on the analytical plate model are compared with three-dimensional Finite Element results computed in the commercially available code ANSYS. The patch actuator network is put into practice by means of four piezoelectric patches attached to each of the two sidewalls of the frame structures, to which electric voltages proportional to the analytically refined patch weights are applied. Analytical and numerical results coincide very well over a broad frequency range.
The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at KRISO, is used to simulate the turbulent flows around a submarine with the realizable $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence model. RANS methods are verified and validated at the level of validation uncertainty 1.54% of the stagnation pressure coefficient for the solution of the turbulent flows around SUBOFF submarine model without appendages. Another SUBOFF configuration, axisymmetric body with four identical stem appendages, is also computed and validated with the experimental data of the nominal wake and hydrodynamic coefficients. The hydrodynamic forces and moments for SUBOFF model and a practical submarine are predicted at several drift and pitch angles. The computed results are in extremely good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that all the computations at the present study were carried out in a PC and the CPU time required for 2.8 million grids was about 20 hours to get fully converged solution. The current study shows that CFD can be a very useful and cost effective tool for the prediction of the hydrodynamic performance of a submarine in the basic design stage.

This article presents a numerical investigation concerning the effect of two kinds of axially progressing internal flows (namely, upward and downward) on fluid.structure interaction (FSI) dynamics about a marine riser model which is subject to external shear current. The CAE technology behind the current research is a proposed FSI solution, which combines structural analysis software with CFD technology together. Efficiency validation for the CFD software was carried out first. It has been proved that the result from numerical simulations agrees well with the observation from relating model test cases in which the fluidity of internal flow is ignorable. After verifying the numerical code accuracy, simulations are conducted to study the vibration response that attributes to the internal progressive flow. It is found that the existence of internal flow does play an important role in determining the vibration mode (/dominant frequency) and the magnitude of instantaneous vibration amplitude. Since asymmetric curvature along the riser span emerges in the case of external shear current, the centrifugal and Coriolis accelerations owing to up- and downward internal progressive flows play different roles in determining the fluid.structure interaction response. The discrepancy between them becomes distinct, when the velocity ratio of internal flow against external shear current is relatively high.
