  • The value of beauty and the resources in the southern coastal sea is most important not only ecologically but also economically in Korea. Since 1980s, intensive use and consequent coastal water pollution have caused an increase in the frequency of red tides outbreak in this area. In this study, seawater and sediment were collected in summer and winter of 1998 and 1999, respectively. The status of seawater eutrophication, sediment oxygen demand(SOD), and nutrients release from sediment were measured. There was an obvious trend that COD and total phosphorous concentrations of summer sediments obtained from aquaculture farms were higher than those of winter sediments. It was concluded that sediments accumulated in the shellfish farms of southern coastal sea caused oxygen deficit in the bottom layer of seawater and played an important role for eutrophication.

  • Concentrations of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were measured in seawater, sediment, and biota collected from Gunsan coast, Korea to investigate their occurrence, distribution, and risk of exposure to humans through seafood consumption. The total concentrations of PFASs in seawater, sediment, and biota ranged from 5.97 to 74.9 ng/L, 0.01 to 13.3 ng/g dry weight, and 0.02 to 5.73 ng/g wet weight, respectively. Predominant PFAS compounds differed across matrices, indicating that the distribution of PFASs in multiple environmental samples is governed by their carbon-chain length. The concentrations of PFASs in seawater were significantly negatively correlated with salinity (P<0.01), suggesting terrestrial input (including land-used PFASs) as the major source of PFAS contamination in coastal environments. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) through seafood consumption were 0.05 and 0.06 ng/kg body weight/day, respectively. The EDIs of PFOA and PFOS measured in this study were lower those the proposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Canada guidelines, indicating limited health risk for Korean population from PFASs through consumption of seafood from Gunsan coastal environment.

  • In order to determine the temporal and spatial variations of nutrient profiles in the shallow pore water columns (upper 30 cm depth) of intertidal sandflats, we measured the salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water and seawater at various coastal environments along the southern coast of Korea. In the intertidal zone, salinity and nutrient concentrations in pore water showed marked vertical changes with depth, owing to the active exchange between the pore water and overlying seawater, while they are temporally more stable and vertically constant in the sublittoral zone. In some cases, the advective flow of fresh groundwater caused strong vertical gradients of salinity and nutrients in the upper 10 cm depth of surface sediments, indicating the active mixing of the fresher groundwater with overlying seawater. Such upper pore water column profiles clearly signified the temporal fluctuation of lower-salinity and higher-Si seawater intrusion into pore water in an intertidal sandflat near the mouth of an estuary. We also observed a semimonthly fluctuation of pore water nutrients due to spring-neap tide associated recirculation of seawater through the upper sediments. Our study shows that the exchange of water and nutrients between shallow pore water and overlying seawater is most active in the upper 20 cm layer of intertidal sandflats, due to physical forces such as tides, wave set-up, and density-thermal gradient.

  • Seawater flow characteristics around a manganese nodule mining device in deep sea were analyzed through numerical investigation. The mining device influences the seawater flow field with complicated velocity distributions, and they are largely dependent on the seawater flow speed, device moving speed, and injection velocity from the collecting part. The flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy distributions are compared at several positions from the device rear, side, and top, and it is possible to predict the distance from which the mining device affects the seawater flow field through the variation of turbulent kinetic energy. With the operation of the collecting device the turbulent kinetic energy remarkably increases, and it gradually decreases along the seawater flow direction. Turbulent kinetic energy behind the mining system increases with the seawater flow velocity. The transient behavior of nodule particles, which are not collected, is also predicted. This study will be helpful in creating an optimal design for a manganese nodule collecting device that can operate efficiently and which is eco-friendly.

  • It was analysed that spatial and temporal change patterns of COD, TN and TP were measured monthly from 2002 to 2005 in Jumunjin Harbour. Cenerally, concentration of upper layer higher than lower layer, concentration difference of COD, TN and TP on upper lower layer at inner zone in Jumunjin Harbour higher than sea area front of breakwater. Seasonal change width of COD concentration different, but seasonal change pattern of COD, $NH_{4}-N$ and TN clearly showed. Water quality improvement effect of seawater exchange facilities and sewage treatment plants is analysed quantitatively using averaged spatial and temporal data set. Change of COD small at 2003, concentration reduced about $34{\sim}47%$ at all zones on 2004 and 2005. TN was influenced largely effect of seawater exchange facilities. Concentration reduction at zone 1, 2, 3 estimated about $60{\sim}70%,\;40{\sim}60%,\;40%$, respectively. As a consequence, concentration reduction of COD and TN that is, effect of water quality improvement influenced seawater exchange facilities appeared not only at inner zone, also sea area front of breakwater and entrance of Jumunjin Harbour.

  • Appearance of cold water in the coastal area off Ulsan-Campo, Southeastern coast of Korea, during summer has been well observed. To see the effect of this cold water on zooplankton distribution, we have collected zooplankton at 4 to 8 sites in the near coast as well as off coast for three times about two weeks of interval from July to August, 2001. Appearance of cold water was confirmed and total of about 195 zooplankton taxa were identified. Both the numbers of taxa appeared and zooplankton abundances did not show significant difference among the three sampling periods. On the other hand, the numbers of taxa appeared were generally greater in off coastal area while zooplankton abundances were greater in the near coastal area. These two variables showed different relationship with seawater temperatures. That is, the numbers of taxa appeared showed positive correlation with seawater temperatures (p<0.05) but abundances showed no significant relationship (p>0.05) with seawater temperatures of which variations were comparable with seasonal variations. It was postulated that the upwelling induced appearance of cold water enriched the nutrients, enhanced phytoplankton production and then provided better food conditions for smaller zooplankton in the near coastal part of this study area. In this context it was postulated that zooplankton distribution in the upwelling area might be controlled by food condition rather than seawater temperatures in spite of the large temperature variations caused by the appearance of cold water.

  • In the present paper, Helmholtz resonator, which is widely used as a sound-amplification device, is applied to the development of seawater-exchanging breakwater. The incident waves can induce a large response in the resonator when incident wave frequency is close to one of natural modes of the resonator. Largely amplified potential energy due to the resonance supplies clean seawater into the harbor side throughout the channel. Flow supplied by the resonator circulates the seawater of harbor and helps to improve water quality. Within the framework of linear potential theory, matched asymptotic expansion method is employed to analyze the wave responses in a resonator. The semi-circular shape of the resonator has been chosen as an analytic model for mathematical simplicity. The wave responses of both single and arrays of Helmholtz resonator are investi¬gated. To validate an analytic solution, model test is conducted at 2-dimensional wave tanle Wave hcights in the resonator and velocity at the channel are measured for the state of valve-on and valve-off.

  • Distribution pattern of seawater intrusion was analyzed from the spatial distribution map of chloride using the geostatistics and CIS analyses. The chloride distribution map made by kriging(ordinary kriging and co-kriging) after exploratory spatial data analysis. Kriging provides an advanced methodology which facilitates quantification of spatial features and enables spatial interpolation. TDS, Na$^{+}$, Br$^{[-10]}$ were selected as second parameters of co-kriging which is higher value of correlation coefficients between chloride and others groundwater properties. Chloride concentration is highest in yeminchon and coastal area. And result in co-kriging was accurate than ordinary kriging.

  • The seawater exchange breakwaters can be effectively employed to conserve or enhance the water quality inside harbors by transmitting the exterior water into the harbor. In the present study, three shapes of the breakwater, that is, the flow conduit embedded type, the wave chamber type and the oscillating water channel type are compared far their water exchanging capability through regular wave experiments. The results show that the net influx of water appears differently depending on wave period for each breakwater type. The net influx of the wave chamber type is much greater than that of the flow conduit embedded type. It is also ascertained that the influx of the oscillating water channel type can be greatly enhanced by attaining the resonance condition inside the channel at the wave periods frequently occurring at the fields where the breakwaters are to be installed.

  • Recently, the injection of cement stabilizer is used as one of ways to improve soft sea-bottom. However, this method makes an argument with $Cr^{6+}$subject to emerge to the seawater from the cement stabilizer. To investigate the amount of$Cr^{6+}$field measurements were carried out in Ochun harbor of Chunsoo Bay. The analysis shows the amount of $Cr^{6+}$in the seawater met the demand of environmental criterion.
