  • An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake flow behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using a constant temperature anemometer and flow visualization. Various vortex shedding modes are observed. Fin height and pitch are closely related to the vortex shedding frequency after a certain transient Reynolds number. The through velocity across the fins decreases with increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by the velocity distribution just on top of the finned tube. The weaker gradient of velocity distribution is shown as increasing the freestream velocity and the fin height, while decreasing the fin pitch. The weaker velocity gradient delays the entrainment flow and weakens its strength. As a result of this phenomenon, vortex shedding is decreased. The effective diameter is defined as a virtual circular cylinder diameter taking into account the volume of fins, while the hydraulic diameter is proposed to cover the effect of friction by the fin surfaces. The Strouhal number based upon the effective diameters seems to correlate well with that of a circular cylinder without fins. After a certain transient Reynolds number, the trend of the Strouhal number can be estimated by checking the ratio of effective diameter to inner diameter. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with the hydraulic diameter exhibit the best correlation with the circular cylinder's data.

  • In this paper, a design method for a ultra-wideband printed semi-circular-shaped dipole antenna operating in the band of 1-15 GHz is studied. The effects of the gap between the two arms of the semi-circular-shaped dipole and the radius of the semi-circle on the input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics are examined to obtain the optimal design parameters. The optimized printed semi-circular-shaped dipole antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and the experimental results show that the antenna has a desired extremely wideband characteristic with a frequency band of 1-15 GHz (175%) for a VSWR < 2.

  • In this paper, the radiation characteristics of a Circular Loop Antenna is studied in a moving homogeneous, isotropic and linear media with a constant velocity much less than the speed of light. In Stuffing the radiation characteristics, Srst vector potential on the loop antenna is derived in the moving media by appling Maxwell-Minkowaski's theory. Next, using the derived relations, the electric and magnetic Seld is calculated for the spec-i Sed wave length ana velocity of the media. The Seld patterns in the moving media are compared with those of stationary media. We find that the intensity of the field is reduced in the direction of the media velocity and increased in the opposite direction only for the component parallel with the plane of the antenna. The deviation from the stationary media is proportional to the velocity of the media and the frequency of source current.

  • Circular Distributed-feedback (DFB) guiding structures can be incorporated in most of the semiconductor laser devices because of the frequency-selective property applicable as an optical filter in optical communications. In this paper, we present a novel and simple modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) using Floquet-Babinet's principle to analyze the optical filtering characteristics of Bragg gratings with cylindrical profile. The numerical results reveal that this method offers a simple and convenient algorithm to analyze the filtering characteristics of circular DFB configurations as well as is extended conveniently to evaluate the guiding problems of circular multi-layered periodic structures.

  • In this paper, we focus on improving the performance of the piezoelectric diaphragms of valveless micropumps. A circular lightweight piezoelectric composite actuator (LIPCA) with a high level of displacement and output force has been developed for piezoelectrically actuated micropumps. We used numerical and experimental methods to analyze the characteristics of the actuator to select optimal design. With the developed circular LIPCA, we fabricated a valveless micropump by photo-lithography and PDMS molding techniques. The displacement of the diaphragm, the flow rate and the back pressure of the micropump were evaluated and discussed. With a semi-empirical method, the flow rate with respect to driving frequency was predicted and compared with experimental one. The test results confirm that the circular LIPCA is a promising candidate for micropump application and can be used as a substitute for a conventional piezoelectric actuator diaphragm.

  • Circular Bragg gratings(CBGs) canbe incorporated in most of the semiconductor laser devices because of the frequency-selective property applicable as an optical narrowband-pass filter in DWDM optical communications. In this paper, the optical filtering characteristics of CBGs are evaluated by a novel and simple analytic modal transmission-line theory(MTLT), which is based on Floquet-Babinet's principle. • Ocean structures and vehicles are exposed to severe ocean environment conditions such as waves, winds and currents. When such ocean structures and vehicles are designed, an accurate structure analysis is required to keep the system safely. Hydro-elastic analysis is one of key issues to design such structures and vehicles. In many previous investigations, numerical analyses for hydro-elastic problem have been used. In this study, an experimental analysis is carried out and the circular cylindrical shell is considered. Dynamical characteristics for a circular cylindrical shell are identified by experimental vibration analysis in air and water. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared in air and water to obtain hydro-elastic effects. Some interesting results are found in the variation of natural frequencies and damping ratios of the circular cylindrical shell for different water contact depths.

  • This paper describes a design for microstrip EMC cross dipole array antenna with circular polarization. To realize the wide bandwidth and circular polarization, the electromagnetic-coupled cross dipole is used. To obtain the uniform aperture illumination, offset technique for array is adopted. In 20-element array design, the calculated axial ratio and gain are about 0.1 dB and 9.9 dBi at 12GHz, respectively. The frequency characteristics of a fabricated 20-element array antenna are measured. The calculated results agree well with the measured ones.

  • The paper describes a theoretical study on the speed of torsional elastic waves propagating in a circular rod whose material properties vary periodically as harmonic functions of the axial coordinate. An approximate solution for the phase speed has been obtained by using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of small amplitude. This solution shows that the wave speed in the nonuniform rod is dependent on the wave frequency as well as the periodic variation of the material properties. It implies that the torsional waves considered in this paper are dispersive even in the fundamental mode.

  • A novel compact circular polarization operation of the microstrip antenna with four-slits and T-slits is proposed. The mechanism for compact size antenna is investigated with the behavior of the currents on the radiating patch. The equivalent surface current path due to the slits is lengthened, reducing the resonant frequency at a fixed patch size. The proposed compact CP design can have an antenna size reduction of about 33 ∼ 45% as compared to the conventional microstrip antenna. Details of the experimental and measured results are presented and analysed.
