  • This paper investigates a power supply of medium voltage with enhanced ignition characteristics for plasma torch. Series resonant half-bridge topology is presented to be a suitable ignition circuitry. The ignition circuitry is integrated into the main power conversion system of a multi-phase staggered three-level dc-dc converter with a diode front-end rectifier. The plasma torch rated for 3MW, 2kA and having the physical size of 1m long is selected to be a high enthalpy source in waste disposal system. The steady-state and transient operations of plasma torch are simulated. The parameters of Cassie-Mary arc model are calculated based on 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. Circuit simulation waveform shows that the ripple of arc current can be maintained within ${\pm}10%$ of its rated value under the existence of load disturbance. This power conversion configuration provides high enough ignition voltage around 5KA during ignition phase and high arc stability under the existence of arc disturbance noise resulting in a high-performance plasma torch system.

  • Chesin-1 telephone currently used in Korea is quite similar in design to early Japanese model of Type-4 telephone which is now being replaced by Type-600 having much improved characteristics. Chesin-1 telephone has a relatively high side-tone level, since the line impedance was taken as a purely resistive component for simplicity in the design of its transmission networks. To meet a current trend of using a smaller diameter of wire for telephone line, it is necessary to improve the present type which has a limited receiving efficiency. A new telephone set has been designed to have an amplifier and a R-C coupled side-tone balancing network. The set offers 8dB gain in the overall performance of transmitting and receiving without any unbearable side-tone disturbances. The paper describes both theoretical and experimental characteristics of the new set.

  • This paper presents a single-pole eight-throw switch, based on an eight-way power divider, using substrate integrate waveguide(SIW) technology. Eight sectorial-lines are formed by inserting radial slot-lines on the top plate of SIW power divider. Each sectorial-line can be controlled independently with high level of isolation. The switching is accomplished by altering the capacitance of the varactor on the line, which causes different input impedances to be seen at a central probe to each sectorial line. The proposed structure works as a switching circuit and an eight-way power divider depending on the bias condition. The change in resonant frequency and input impedance are estimated by adapting a tapered transmission line model. The detailed design, fabrication, and measurement are discussed.

  • This paper presents the three-port DC-DC converter modeling and controller design procedure, which is part of the solid-state transformer (SST) to interface medium voltage AC grid to bipolar DC distribution network. Due to the high primary side DC link voltage, the proposed converter employs the three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) topology at the primary side and 2-two level half bridge circuits for each DC distribution network. For the proposed converter particular structure, this paper conducts modeling the three winding transformer and the power transfer between each port. A decoupling method is adopted to simplify the power transfer model. The voltage controller design procedure is presented. In addition, the output current sharing controller is employed for current balancing between the parallel-connected secondary output ports. The proposed circuit and controller performance are verified by experimental results using a 30 kW prototype SST system.

  • The mobile device industry demands much higher levels of integration and lower costs coupled with a growing awareness of the complete system's configuration. A subsystem module package is similar to a board-level circuit that integrates a system function in a package beyond a System-in-Package (SiP) design. It is an advanced IC packaging solution to enhance the PDN and achieve a smaller form factor. Unlike a system-level design with a decoupling capacitor, a subsystem module package system needs to redefine the role of the capacitor and its configuration for PDN performance. Specifically, the design of package's form factor should include careful consideration of optimal PDN performance and the number of components, which need to define the decoupling capacitor's value and the placement strategy for a low impedance profile with associated cost benefits. This paper will focus on both the static case that addresses the voltage (IR) drop and AC analysis in the frequency domain with three specific topics. First, it will highlight the role of simulation in the subsystem module design for the PDN. Second, it will compare the performance of double-sided component placement (DSCP) motherboards with the subsystem module package and then prove the advantage of the subsystem module package. Finally, it will introduce three-terminal decoupling capacitor (decap) configurations of capacitor size, count and value for the subsystem module package to determine the optimum performance and package density based on the cost-effective model.

  • Lithium batteries are widely used in mobile electronic devices due to their higher voltage and energy density, lighter weight and longer life cycle when compared to other secondary batteries. In particular, a high demand for lithium batteries is expected for electric cars. In the case of the lithium batteries used in electric cars, driving distance must be calculated accurately and discharging should not be done below a level that makes it impossible to crank. Therefore, accurate information on the state-of-charge (SOC) becomes an essential element for reliable driving. In this paper, a novel method for estimating the SOC of lithium polymer batteries using AC impedance is proposed. In the proposed method, the parameters are extracted by fitting the measured impedance spectrum on an equivalent impedance model and the variation in the parameter values at each SOC is used to estimate the SOC. Also to shorten the long length of time required for the measurement of the impedance spectrum, a novel method is proposed that can extract the equivalent impedance model parameters of lithium polymer batteries with the impedance measured at only two specific frequencies. Experiments are conducted on lithium polymer batteries, with similar capacities, made by different manufacturers to prove the validity of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we analyze experimental results by applying the PHILS model to a lab-scale superconducting current limiter system for its actual application in medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) systems. Superconducting current limiters exhibit effective current-limiting performance in circuit breaker operations, particularly in limiting large fault currents within a short period, addressing the challenges posed by the increasing use of renewable energy and the integration of DC medium-voltage distribution systems. The development of such superconducting current limiters faces various technical and cost disadvantages, especially when applying a medium-voltage 35kV level system, which is intended for future introduction. The proven lab-scale superconducting current limiter system and the PHILS model are combined and integrated into the actual system. Our plan involves analyzing the limiter's performance, assessing its impact on the system, and preparing for its application in future medium-voltage systems. Utilizing RTDS, a simulation was conducted by connecting actual scaled-down equipment and systems, with the analysis results presented.

  • In the near future, CNTFET(Carbon NanoTube Field Effect Transistor) is considered as one of the most promising candidate for the replacement of modern silicon-based transistors by utilizing the ballistic or near-ballistic transport capability of CNT(Carbon NanoTube). For the large-scale fabrication of high performance CNTFET, semiconducting CNTs have to be well-aligned with a fixed pitch and high densities in the each CNTFET. However, due to the immaturity of the CNTFET fabrication process, CNTs can be unevenly positioned in a CNTFET and existing HSPICE library file cannot support the circuit level evaluation of performance variation caused by the unevenly positioned CNTs. To evaluate the performance variation, linear programming methodology was suggested previously, but the errors can be made during the calculation of the current and the gate capacitance of a CNTFET. In this paper, the reasons causing errors will be discussed in detail and the new methodology to reduce the errors will be also suggested. Simulation results shows that the errors can be reduced from 7.096% to 3.15%.

  • In this paper, a low-cost impedance spectroscopy system(LCISS) suitable for modeling the electrochemical power sources such as fuel cells, batteries and supercapacitors is designed and implemented. Since the developed LCISS is composed of simple sensor circuits, commercial data acquisition board and LabVIEW software, a graphic language with powerful HMI(Human-Machine Interface), it is expected ta be widely used in substitution of the expensive EIS instruments. In the proposed system, the digital lock-in amplifier is adopted to achieve the accurate measurements even in the presence of the high level of noises. The developed hardware and software is applied to measure the impedance spectrum of the Ballard Nexa 1.2kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack and an equivalent impedance model is proposed based on the measurement results. The validity of the proposed equivalent circuit and the developed system is proven by the measurement of the ac power losses of the PEM fuel celt stack by the ripple current.

  • In this study, a release test bed is designed to evaluate the dynamic behaviors of a coil spring. From the release tests, the dynamic behaviors of a coil spring are analyzed. A lumped parameter spring model was established for numerical simulation of a spring. The design variables of a coil spring are optimized by using the design of experiments approach. Two-level factorial designs are used for the design optimization, and the primary effects of the design variables are analyzed. Based on the results of the interaction analysis and design sensitivity analysis, the level of the design variables is rearranged. Finally, the mixed-level factorial design is used for the optimum design process. According to the optimum design of the opening spring, the dynamic performance of the spring-operated mechanism increases by 2.90.
