  • The aim of this study is to synthesis basic resins for the preparation of PU flame-retardant coatings that contain phosphorus and chlorine. After synthesizing intermediates of tetramethylene bis(orthophophate) (TMBO) and neohexanediol trichlorobenzoate (TBA-adduct), the condensation polymerization was performed with the intermediates, 1,4-butanediol, and adipic acid to obtain four-component copolymers. In the condensation polymerization, the content of phosphorus was fixed to be 2%, and the content of trichlorobenzoic acid (TBA) that provides chlorine component was varied to be 10, 20, and 30wt%, and we designated the prepared modified polyesters containing chlorine and phosphorus as TTBA-10C, TTBA-20C and TTBA-30C. Average molecular weight and polydispersity index of the prepared TTBAs decreased with increasing TBA content because of the increase in the number of hydroxyl groups that retards reaction. We found that the thermal stability of the prepared TTBAs increased with chlorine content at high temperatures.

  • In this study, we examine the feasibility of using chlorine in clinker as an early-strength cement by the effect of accelerating the cement hydration reaction of chlorine. Clinker with a chlorine content of 200-1,000 ppm was prepared using actual cement kilns, and 46 cement samples were prepared by adding gypsum and admixtures(GGBFs and limestone). We measured consistency, setting, 1-28 days compressive strength and analyzed them statistically. Test results indicated that an increase of the chlorine content resulted in shortening of initial and final setting time and the improvement of 1 day compressive strength. But the 28 days compressive strength was decreased. Specifically, when the chlorine content was increased from 230 to 965 ppm, the 1 day compressive strength increased up to 4.6 MPa, improvement effect was superior to that of increasing Blaine in the range of 3,400-3,970 cm2/g.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of chlorine on the yield, chemical constituents and physical properties of Burley leaf tobacco. The results obtained are as follows. 1. There was no significant differences in growth and yield among chlorine application levels. 2. When chlorine being applied 4kg/10a or more, the cured leaf showed higher chlorine content and lower leaf quality remarkably. It was estimated that the critical application of chlorine was 3kg/10a. 3. Total nitrogen and alkaloid contents of cured leaf were increased by chlorine application, while the phosphorus, calcium and magnesium were not affected. 4. The reflectance color of red and yellow were decreased by cvhlorine application in cured leaf of field grown tobacco.

  • To investigate the effects of reduction of leaf processing factories on the uniformity of processed leaf quality, the contents and their C.V.(Coefficient of Variation) of chemical constituents of flue-cured leaf tobacco produced from 1997 to 2001 and processed at various factories were analysed. The average leaf chemical contents of 12 grades for 5 years ranged as follows ; nicotine 2.00∼0.85%. total sugar 10.7∼16.9%, total nitrogen 2.36∼2.78%, crude ash 14.6∼15.6% and chlorine 0.50∼0.75%. The variations of chemical contents among crop years was higher in total sugar content while lower in crude ash content. The C.V. of chemical content in same grade leaves was higher in chlorine content while lower in total nitrogen and crude ash contents, and the ratio of C.V. among processing factories/C.V. in total population was higher in total sugar content while lower in crude ash content. When the leaves were processed at one factory, the deviations of chemical contents reduced considerably. Particularly, the decreasing effect of deviation was higher in total sugar content.

  • Chitosan non-woven fabrics were acetylated to improve their antimicrobial properties. The active chlorine content, antimicrobial properties, storage stability, and surface properties of acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics were investigated. The active chlorine content of the fabrics increased upon reduction of the degree of the acetylation or increase in sodium hypochlorite concentration. Acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics showed powerful antimicrobial activity by efficiently killing Escherichia coli and forming a growth inhibition zone for Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy observations demonstrated that the acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics were not damaged in sodium hypochlorite solution.

  • Iron oxide produced form the pickling process at the cold rolling mill in iron & steelmaking industry, use for raw material of electronic an colorant product. Recently, decreasing of the chlorine content in iron oxide is demanded at the market. In this study, under the field test of the spray roaster and the screw conveyer for dechlorination, the experiments of the chlorine content in iron oxide were investigated. From the results of experiment, the chlorine content in iron oxide can be reduced to 1,100 ppm from the spray roaster and, 383 ppm from the screw conveyer.

  • This study was focused on the maximization of flame-retardancy of polyesters by a synergism of simultaneously introduced chlorine and phosphorus into polymer chains of modified polyesters. To prepare modified polyesters, reaction intermediates, TD-adduct (prepared from trimethylolpropane /2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA)) and TMBO (prepared from tetramethlene bis (orthophosphate)), were prepared first, then condensation polymerization of the prepared intermediates, adipic acid, and 1,4-butanediol were carried out. In the condensation polymerization, the content of phosphorus was fixed to be 2wt%, and the content of 2,4-DCBA that provides chlorine component was varied to be 10, 20, and 30wt%, and we designated the prepared modified polyesters containing chlorine and phosphorus as ABTTs. The prepared intermediates and modified polyesters were characterized with FT-IR, NMR, GPC, and TGA analysis. Average molecular weight and polydipersity index of the preparation of ABTTs were decreased with increasing 2,4-DCBA content because of the incease in hydroxyl group that retards reaction. We found that the thermal stability of the prepared ABTTs increased with chlorine content at high temperatures.

  • In order to obtain the maximum flame retardancy as well as the minimum deterioration of physical properties of PU flame-retardant coatings, chlorine and phosphorus functional groups were introduced into the pre-polymer of modified polyesters. In the first step, the tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate) (TBOP) and neohexanediol dichloroacetate (DCA-adduct) intermediates were synthesized. In the second step, 1,4-butanediol and adipic acid monomers were polymerized with the two kinds of intermediates to obtain copolymers. The modified polyesters containing chlorine and phosphorus (ATBA-10C, -20C, and -30C) were synthesized by adjusting that the content of phosphorus compound was fixed as 2wt% and the contents of chlorine compound (dichloroacetic acid) were varied as 10, 20, and 30wt%. Average molecular weight and polydispersity index of the preparation of ATBAs were decreased with increasing DCA content because of the increase in hydroxyl group that retards reaction.
