  • An analytical model about lateral crack occurring in abrasive wear of brittle solids is developed. Stress field around the lateral crack and stress intensity factor at the crack tip are analytically modeled. Abrasive wear by abrasive particle is experimentally studied. In soda-lime glass, it is observed that chipping by lateral crack occurs and produces the greatest material removal when normal load applied by the abrasive particle is about 1.5∼3.0 N. The prediction of lateral crack length from the model is compared with the experimentally measured length in soda-lime glass.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) is monitored during end milling with a sensor attached to the cutting fluid discharge nozzle. Cutting forces are also measured and compared with the AE signals to examine the reliability of the AE signals. It is demonstrated that the AE signals provide reliable informations about the cutting processes and tool states. Moreover, edge chipping and fracture of tools can be successfully detected using both the AE signals and cutting forces.

  • This study developed a method to quantitatively measure the size of cracks in concrete using X-ray CT images. We prepared samples with a diameter of 50 mm and a length of 100 mm by coring cracked concrete block that was obtained by chipping. We used a micro-focus X-ray CT, then applied the 3DMA method (3 Dimensional Medial axis Analysis) to the 3D CT images to find effective parameters for damage assessment. Finally, we quantitatively assessed the damage based on sample locations, using the damage assessment parameter. Results clearly show that the area near the chipping surface was damaged to a depth of 3 cm. Furthermore, X-ray methods can be used to evaluate the porosity index, burn number, and medial axis, which are used to estimate the damage to the area near the chipping surface.

  • Nowadays, dental zirconia is widely used as a framework material for a fixed dental prosthesis as well as a single restoration. However, clinical studies have reported high incidence of veneer chipping of zirconia-ceramic restorations compared to that of metal-ceramics. Several factors were raised as the possible causes of veneer ceramic chipping, however, it is still in debate. Recently, residual stresses in the veneer ceramics after cooling process gathers attention as one possible cause of chipping and many studies reported that the rate of cooling significantly influenced the types and the amount of residual stress. The purpose of current review was to briefly describe the effect of cooling rate on the residual stress in zirconia-ceramics. It was also described that the different behavior of residual stress between zirconia-ceramics and metal-ceramics following different cooling rate.

  • In masive concrete placement, cracking problem due to hydration heat is frequently encountered. One of measure to solve this problem is to make a construction joint. However, it is cumbersome to make it by chipping the surface of joint. In this study, push-out test for 18 specimens was conducted to compare the interface shear strength of consturction joints whose surfaces were prepared with three methods; chipping, rib-lath, folded rib-lath. Compared to the specimens made with conventional surface chipping, those with rib-lathe showd excellent preformance increasing shear resistance capacity and the role of shear key conceived by folding rib-lath played important role in enhancing shear resistance.

  • This study focuses on the effect of the elasticity modulus of jig material on blade edge shape in the grinding process of a sapphire medical knife. The ELID grinding process was applied as the edge-grinding method for sapphire material. Carbon steel and copper have been selected as the hard and soft jig materials, respectively. The blade edge created by ELID grinding was measured by a surface roughness tester and optical microscope. The shape of the ground edge and surface roughness were compared using the measurement results. As a result, it was found that chipping in the blade edge of the sapphire knife occurred more than in the case of jig material with a high-elasticity modulus because of the high normal force in the grinding process. Moreover, the maximum height surface roughness, $R_{max}$,of the ground surface was higher in the case of the jig material with a high-elasticity modulus due to the difference in elasticelongation. It was considered to lead to chipping from the notch effect.

  • For a nanoscale Cu/low-k wafer, inter-layer dielectric (ILD) and metal layers peelings, cracks, chipping, and delamination are the most common dicing defects by traditional diamond blade saw process. Sidewall void in sawing street is one of the key factors to bring about cracks and chipping. The aim of this research is to evaluate laser grooving & mechanical sawing parameters to eliminate sidewall void and avoid top-side chipping as well as peeling. An ultra-fast pico-second (ps) laser is applied to groove/singulate the 28-nanometer node wafer with Cu/low-k dielectric. A series of comprehensive parametric study on the recipes of input laser power, repetition rate, grooving speed, defocus amount and street index has been conducted to improve the quality of dicing process. The effects of the laser kerf geometry, grooving edge quality and defects are evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB). Experimental results have shown that the laser grooving technique is capable to improve the quality and yield issues on Cu/low-k wafer dicing process.

  • An on-line monitoring system of endmill failure such as weal, chipping, and fracture is developed using AE, cutting force Characteristic variations of AE and cutting force signals due to endmill failure are identified as follows. When endmill fracture occurs, AE count rate shows a rapid Increase in conjunction with a subsequent decrease while a standard deviation of the principal cutting force Increases significantly. The increase of AE count rate precedes the Increase of standard deviation of principal cutting force. Chipping results in relatively small increase and decrease of AE count rate without any significant variation of the cutting force Gradual increase of AE count rate and mean principal cutting force are Identified to be related with the wear of cutter. A cutter fracture detection algorithm is developed based on the present results. The signals me normalized to enhance the applicability of the algorithm to Wide those of fresh cutters, and qualitative characteristics of AE signals encountered at the moment of fracture are employed. It is demonstrated that the algorithm can detect the cutter fracture successfully.

  • The biocompatibility and the fatigue strength of Co-Cr-Mo alloy are excellent, so it is used well for the material of artificial joints. The head of artificial joint needs mirror surface for reduction of abrasive resistance. Mirror finishing of Co-Cr-Mo alloy with geometrically defined single crystal diamond cutting tools is handicapped by micro chipping of tool edge. In general, it is said that the micro chipping of diamond tool is caused by work hardening of Co-Cr-Mo alloy for the cut. In the present research, mirror finishing of Co-Cr-Mo alloy by applying ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting was carried out. The experimental results show that the micro chipping of diamond tool was suppressed and the tool wear was remarkably reduced as compared with the ordinary diamond cutting without elliptical vibration motion. It was confirmed that the good mirror surface of maximum surface roughness of 25 nmP-V was obtained for the cutting length of about 14 m. It is expected that mirror finishing of Co-Cr-Mo alloy can be achieved by applying ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting practically.

  • This paper aims to clarify the effects of grinding conditions on the grinding force, ground surface and chipping size of workpiece in surface grinding of various ferrites with the resin bond diamond wheel. The main conclusions obtained were as follows: In a constant peripheral wheel speed, the specific grinding energy is fitted by straight lines with grinding depth coefficient($\delta$) in a logarithmic graph. The effect of both depth of cut and workpiece speed on grinding energy becomes larger in the order of Mn-Zn, Cu-Ni-Zn and Sr. When using the diamond grain of the lower toughness, the roughness of the ground surface becomes lower. The ground surfaces show that the fracture process during grinding becomes more brittle in the order of Sr, Mn-Zn and Cu-Ni-Zn. The chipping size at the corner of workpiece in grinding increases with the the increases of the depth of cut and workpiece speed, and the decrease of peripheral wheel speed. The effect of both depth of cut and workpiece speed on chipping size becomes more larger in the order of Sr, Mn-Zn and Cu-Ni-Zn.
