The purpose of this study was to develop an appropriate scale for evaluating early years children's English textbooks and to confirm the validity and reliability for the scale thus developed. The scale was administered to 563 Korean early childhood English teachers. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) of the 24 item scale demonstrated Cronbach' ${\alpha}$ = .94 for internal consistency of the total items. Confimatory Factor Analysis (CFA) supported a four-factor structure. Cross-Validation for the retest accepted the four-factors. Those four factors were as follows; Contents & Organization as factor 1, Illustrations & Designs as factor 2, Materials & Topics, as factor 3 and Objectives as factor 4. The author suggests that these afore mentioned factors will prove to be most useful for evaluating the children's English textbooks which are apparently published in an often quite indiscriminant manner.
As the rate of foreign workers increasing, the rates of their children are rising, as well. The children's native countries vary from Japan, China to Indonesia, and difficulty of learning is expected in their entering the regular education due to the differences in the contents and curriculum they had learnt. This study analyzed the science textbooks of five Asian elementary schools including Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Iran-in diversified sides focusing on the content of earth science, for the children of foreign workers. The characteristics of the elementary science textbooks of the subject countries were compared in seven criteria-the rate of earth science in the textbooks, how units are arranged, whether the earth science contents are included, the contents highly related to their socio-cultural traits, photographs, scientific inquiries, and test items. The textbooks showed numerous differences with their own characteristics, and it is expected that the children of foreign workers would face difficulties in studies taking parts in the Korean formal education. Hereupon, this study proposes the needs of development of sub-materials for the children of foreign workers adapting to schools, and reinforcement of educating teachers for understanding children, with a national plan for the children excluded from education due to problems such as an illegal residence.
This study analyzed the contents of "Reading" textbooks for 1st-6th grades. The focus of the analysis was on philosophical thinking methods designed to help children to think for themselves. Following the analysis, methods were designed for the application of effective use of Philosophy in the elementary school curriculum. Analysis of works of children's literature in "reading" textbooks show patterns of logical, ethical and creative thinking. Therefore, "reading" textbooks can be used to help children to think philosophically. Five stages of discussion can be applied in the classroom; these are: establish the issues, outline the process of discussion, discuss the issues, evaluate and summarize the discussion, apply the learning to other subjects. Teachers can use philosophical thinking methods to improve the quality and quantity of instruction with various questions, having children express their opinions, interpreting their thoughts clearly, maintaining logical consistency, and evaluating the procedures and results of discussion. These methods can be used in the teaching-learning process in the elementary school to develop rich findings and meaningful communication.

This study was conducted to reduce children's fat intake and to establish healthy dietary lifestyles. To achieve these goals, we searched, collected, and analyzed the materials related to the fat education, based on which the research personnel-professors and graduate students in nutrition and child education and elementary school teachers-discussed to figure out major topics, objectives, and detailed contents and activities appropriate for fat intake reduction. We also organized an advisory committee composed of 15 professionals in related fields to discuss the adequacy and validity of the specific contents. Finally, we systematically organized the contents and developed children's textbooks and teacher's guidebooks. Considering the different cognitive development stages of junior and senior elementary students we developed two different textbooks for each of them which are easy to read and understand, fun to play with lots of activities, and designed to practice into daily life. The contents cover three major topics-the concept of lipid, lipid in food, lipid in life and are composed of 6 units in total. To help teachers understand and and to instruct, teacher's guidebooks contain an overview of the education, specific information and practical guidelines for each class. We developed these education materials with the aim of lowering children's fat consumption and eventually promoting their health welfare; hopefully we expect these materials would be useful for children's nutritional education in the field.
This study was conducted to reduce sodium (Na) intake and to establish healthy dietary lifestyles of children. To achieve these goals, we searched, collected, and analyzed the materials related to the Na education, based on which the research personnel-professors and graduate students in nutrition and child education and elementary school teachers discussed to figure out major topics, objectives, and detailed contents and activities appropriate for Na intake reduction. Also a survey was done on the sodium intake and nutrition knowledge of the elementary students. We also organized an advisory committee composed of 15 professionals in related fields to discuss the adequacy and validity of the specific contents. The emphasis in environmental education for children should be on awareness, appreciation, and sensory experiences. By offering children opportunities to experience the elements of nature that surround them, teachers elevate children's comfort level and familiarity with the natural world. But many children have little contact with nature, because of urban living, hurried schedules, TV's attraction, and the low value most schools place on outdoor activities. So, teachers have to expand the real out-of-door experiences into the classroom by sharing and making accessible books focusing on nature and the natural environment. Namely, quality children's literature is an excellent vehicle for extending a particular experience or introducing new ones. Building on outdoor experiences through stories encourages children to explore more deeply what they have observed and experienced-concepts are reinforced, new knowledge gained, vicarious experiences provided. There are three-fold classification of environmentalism, especially environmental ethics, and three-aspects of the history in children's literature. The analytical results of this study are as follow. The environmental ideology in elementary Korean textbooks varies from 'egocentrism-didacticism' to 'ecocentrism-fantasy'. This finding has implication for selecting children's books and teaching environmental contents in elementary school. Therefore teachers and parents need to get ready to receive ecocriticism.
This study makes suggestions on the contents of home economics to form adolescents' values of a healthy marriage and family. For this objective, family-related contents of high school home economics textbooks between Korea and the U.S. were comparatively analyzed using a qualitative interpretation method, based on the elements of a healthy family. Obtaining nine types of high school technology & home economics textbooks (2009 revised curriculum), two types of high school home economics science textbooks (2009 revised curriculum), and five types of the U.S. home economics textbooks for grade 10 to 12, contents elements, described contents, pictures, illustration, and activity tasks of the contents were examined. This study discussed the implications of family-related content in home economics high school textbooks of Korea as well as presented suggestions to be used as basic data for the development of subject content. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. In the results of analyzing the family-related contents in home economics textbooks of both countries, Korean home economics textbooks emphasized the contents meeting a democratic and gender-equal family relationship, maintenance & creation of healthy family life culture, rational resource management, and support for children's growth & development. However, U.S. home economics textbooks focused on elements such as economic stability of family, stable food, clothing, and shelter, open conversation, support of children's growth & development, rational resource management, sharing family roles, healthy citizenship, and harmony between work and family.
In this paper, some factors such as the perspective of children, instructional materials(especially activities in textbooks for elementary school mathematics), and teacher's questioning styles are discussed as ones influenced on students' immersion in leaner-centered instruction. This discussion is based on the author's two implementations of the kind of two instructions. About the first theme, constructivists assert that even children who are in elementary school can have reflective abstracting ability. Teachers' asking questions with the belief differ from ones with traditional perspective of children, which is relevant the third factor. They value and respect learners' thinking outcomes, even though they are not sometimes wrong and have errors. Also, they have them opportunities to think different from others and to ask how they get their answers. To do these, they frequently ask open-ended questions, not closed. All of them is possible through the activities provided in textbooks. Some characteristics which can prompt such teacher's questions using activities in elementary mathematics textbooks are discussed.

This research is aimed to examine the differences through comparative analysis of the Earth Science contents in the science textbooks between Korea and DPRK. The contents of level and scope in science textbooks between Korea and DPRK are analysed by TIMSS frameworks. The results of this research are as follows : 1. The science textbooks of DPRK is lower in quality of paper, printing to that of Korea, and the illustrations, editing design in the textbooks of DPRK are fewer, monochromic and monotonous while those in Korea. 2. The contents of Earth Science in DPRK's science textbooks rank 37.0%, but those of Korea's science textbooks rank 25.5% of the whole textbooks. The learning units related to Earth Science are generally similar to the level and scope in science textbooks between Korea and DPRK. The type of inquire activities in the textbooks of DPRK largely takes on the model experiment, and it was shown that the number of experiments directly made by children is very small compared to Korea' textbooks. 3. There are lots of differences in Earth Science learning terms and predicates used in the textbooks between Korea and DPRK.
Seven textbooks for children used in homes and schools (sudangs) of the Chosun dynasty were examined to investigate how they taught emotional intelligence in traditional Korean society. The contents of the books were analyzed according to the 4 abilities of emotional intelligence described by Salovey and Mayer (1966): (1) perception, appraisal, and expression of emotion, (2) emotion's facilitation of thinking, (3) understanding and analyzing emotions, and (4) regulation of emotion to promote emotional and intellectual growth. The analysis showed that most of the books valued emotional intelligence and taught children how they perceive, appraise, and express emotions. The emotional ability to facilitate thinking was also emphasized, whereas the ability to understand and analyze emotions was seldom mentioned. It was also found that the regulation of emotion was emphasized; that is, children were educated to control and depress their emotions rather than to express them naturally.
