The Relationships between Mothers' Parental Intelligence and Children's Abilities of Self-control and Empathy (어머니의 부모역할지능과 유아의 자기조절능력 및 공감능력과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mothers' parental intelligence and children's abilities of self-control and empathy. 180 children aged 5 were selected from 4 kindergartens in G city. The gender breakdown for the sample group was as follows : boys comprised 60.0% (108) and girls comprised 40.0% (72) of the total sample. The Parental Intelligence Scales (PIS) was used to rate mothers' parental intelligence. Children's self-control and empathy were also measured. The SPSS 12.0 program was used for the purposes of analyzing the data. The results of the study were as follows. Firstly, mothers' parental intelligence was related in a general sense with children's self-control. However, such a relationship did not appear between rejection in the area of parental intelligence and self appraisal in self-control, nor did it appear between acceptance in intelligence and emotion in self-control. Secondly, the variable of encouragement was the only one in evidence in terms of mothers' parental intelligence and how it was related with children's empathy.

A Comparison of Young Children's Multiple Intelligence Area and Social Behaviors in Montessori and General Programs of Day Care Centers (몬테소리와 일반 어린이집 유아의 다중지능 영역비교와 사회성)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in young children's multiple intelligence and social behaviors based not only on Montessori and general programs of day care centers but also on their gender and social- demographic factors. The subjects were 329 young children (182 boys and 147 girls aged from four to five) from two day care centers in Cheongju city. The instruments used in this study were HAPI (Hillside assessment of Perceived Intelligence) to measure the surveyee's multiple intelligence and Park & Lee's scale to measure their social behaviors. The frequencies, percentiles, mean, standard deviations, Cronbach a, t-teat, F and LSD were used to analyze the collected data through SPSS WIN program. The results of this study are as follows: 1) As for young children's multiple intelligence, there are differences according to young children's gender, order of birth, parents' level of education and teacher's working period out of social-demographic factors. 2) As for the young children's social behavior, there are differences according to young children's gender, mother's level of education and teacher's working period out of social-demographic factors.

The Relationship of the Preschool Children's Self Regulation Ability and Multiple Intelligences (유아의 다중지능이 자기조절 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among self-regulation and multiple intelligences of preschool children. The participants were 275 children between the ages 3, 4 and 5 and their mothers and teachers from kindergarten in Ulsan. The collected data were analyzed by using the SPSS v.21 computer program. The major results of this study were as follows; First, children's self-regulation ability was statistical significant disparity between sex and age. Second, children's Spatial Intelligence and Linguistic Intelligence were statistical significant disparity between sex and age. Logical-mathematical Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence were statistical significant disparity only age. Musical Intelligence, Intrapersonal Intelligence were statistical significant disparity only sex. but Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence was not statistical insignificant disparity between sex and age. Third, Intrapersonal Intelligence, Linguistic Intelligence, Spatial Intelligence, Logical-mathematical Intelligence and Interpersonal Intelligence were significant predictors on children's self-regulation ability. These results could be used as stepping stone in developing preschool children's self-regulation program in near future.

Discriminant Analysis of Children's Peer Status based on their Conflict-Resolving Strategies and Emotional Intelligence (갈등해결전략과 정서지능에 의한 아동의 또래지위 판별)

  • The purposes of this study were to test differences in conflict-resolving strategies and emotional intelligence based on children's peer status, and to verify the discriminance of conflict-resolving strategies and emotional intelligence for peer status. 58 popular children and 52 rejected children from 4 elementary school were selected, and the data were analyzed with independent sample t-test and discriminant analysis. The research findings are as follows: First, negotiation- and cooperation-strategies (sub-factors of conflict-resolving strategy) and emotional intelligence showed statistically significant differences between popular children and rejected children, while other sub-factors of conflict-resolving strategy and sub-factors of emotional intelligence showed indifference between them. Second, negotiation- and cooperation-strategies among 4 sub-factors of conflict-resolving strategy and 5 sub-factors of emotional intelligence were the most discriminant predictors for children's peer status. The results suggest systematic teacher training and program for the rejected children's improvement of negotiation- and cooperation-strategies in their peer relations.

The Influences of Young Children's Emotionality and Inter/Intrapersonal Intelligence on Behavioral Problems (유아의 긍정적, 부정적 정서성이 내면화 및 외현화 행동문제에 미치는 영향: 대인관계지능 및 개인이해지능의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study focused on the links between emotionality, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence, and behavior problems in a sample of 185 four- to five-year-old children in kindergarten and daycare centers in Seoul. All variables were measured by the teachers of surveyed children. Collected data were analyzed by Simple Regression and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. The main results of this study were as follows: Firstly, children's positive and negative emotionality each exerted negative and positive effects on their interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence. Secondly, children's positive emotionality had a negative influence on internalizing behavior problems. On the other hand, children's negative emotionality had a positive influence on internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Finally, effect of children's positive emotionality on their internalizing behavior problems was totally mediated by interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence. On the other hand, effect of children's negative emotionality on their internalizing and externalizing behavior problems was partially mediated by their interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence.

Kindergarten Children's Emotional Intelligence and Their Giftedness (유아의 정서지능과 영재성의 성별 차이 및 관계 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the gender differences in children's emotional intelligence or their giftedness, and to investigate the relationship between children's emotional intelligence and their giftedness. Subjects were 268 5-year-old kindergarten children who were composed of 131 male children and 137 female children. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. The major results of this study were as follows: First, female children showed higher emotional intelligence than male children. Second, there was no signifiant difference between male children and female children in their giftedness. Third, controlling for children's IQ, utilization of emotion, appraisal and expression of self-emotion, and relationship with peers were predictable variables of children's giftedness. Among the subareas of emotional intellignece, utilization of emotion was the most important predictor in explaining children's giftedness. The results showed that there was significant relationship between children's emotional intelligence and their giftedness.

Effects of Children's Temperament, Emotional Intelligence, Maternal Socialization Beliefs and Strategies on Preschoolers' Pro-social Behavior (유아의 친사회적 행동발달에 관한 연구 - 유아의 사회인구학적 특성 및 기질, 정서지능과 어머니의 양육신념 및 사회화 전략을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate which variables predicted preschoolers' pro-social behavior. Subjects consisted of 250 preschooler-mother pairs; children were 3 to 6 years of age Children's emotional intelligence and pro-social behavior were assessed by classroom teachers. Data on the mothers' socialization beliefs and strategies as well as children's temperament were gathered through maternal self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation and regression analyses. Results showed that children's temperament (withdrawal predisposition) and emotional intelligence (self emotional expression) predicted children's pro-social behavior. Mothers' perceptions of the importance of pro-social behavior correlated negatively with children's pro-social behavior.

A Study on Creativity According to Young Children's Gender and Intelligence (유아의 성별과 지능에 따른 창의성의 차이 연구)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine how children's creativity varies depending on gender and intelligence. Methods: The participants of this study were 100 five-to-six-year-olds from a kindergarten in city S. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS WIN 21.0 program. I conducted t-tests to examine differences in intelligence and creativity according to gender, and used two-way ANOVA for inspecting the differences according to gender and intelligence. Furthermore, I used additional one-way ANOVA for inspecting the interaction-effect of gender and intelligence concretely. Results: As a result, there are no differences in creativity according to a child's gender, but there are some variations in intelligence according to gender. In addition, the aspect of the relationship between children's creativity and intelligence varies according to gender. Conclusion/Implications: It is meaningful that this study determined that gender and level of intelligence influence an improvement in creativity. This study supplies variables and directions to be considered when an educational activity or program is developed for young children.

Children's Intelligence, Concept of Conservation, and the Relations With Learning English (아동의 지능, 보존개념의 발달과 영어학습과의 관계분석)

  • This study investigated the relations of children's age, intelligence, and the concept of conservation to their learning of English. Ten 4-year-old children from 1 child-care center and 13 7-year-old children from 1 elementary school were tested after completion of 8 sessions of experimental English classes. Children's intelligence was measured by K-WPPSI for 4-year olds and K-WISC for 7-year-olds. Children were tested for number and liquid conservations. A Korean teacher with 11 years of experience of teaching children at American elementary schools taught the 2 groups with the same subjects and methods. Data were analysed by independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Pearson's r. The results showed that children's age and the concept of conservation were related to English learning. No statistically significant relationship with IQ was found.

The Mediating Effect of Emotional Intelligence on the Relationship between Mothers' Attachments to Young Children and the Creative Personality of the Children (유아에 대한 어머니 애착과 유아의 창의적 인성간의 관계에서 정서지능의 매개효과)

  • This study examined the mediating effects of emotional intelligence on the relationship between mothers' attachments to young children and the creative personality of the children. Pearson's correlations between variables were analyzed, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify the direct and indirect effects of a mothers' attachments to young children and the emotional intelligence and creative personality of the children. The sample included a total of 228 children aged 4-5 who were attending nursery in Gwangju, Korea. Significant differences were observed by gender and age, but no significant differences were found to be associated with the mother's attachment to the child by age. However, emotional intelligence partially mediated the relationships between the mother's attachment to the child and the child's creative personality. The results suggest that emotional intelligence may edify the creative personality of young child as a mediating response to the mother's attachment.
