통합과 분리학급 장애유아의 놀이 유형에 관한 연구 (Play Types of Preschool Children with Disabilities : Mainstreaming versus Segregated Classrooms)

  • This study investigated differences in play types of preschool children with disabilities both in mainstreamed and segregated classrooms. The play behaviors of 50 preschool children with disabilities were observed and videotaped during free play time. Differences were found in children's dramatic and group play. Conclusions were that mainstreamed preschool program emphasizing a play-based curriculum could be an effective model for children with disabilities by providing for a variety of play types. Implications for mainstreaming education and for teacher education were discussed.

장애아동의 행동에 대한 어머니의 귀인 성향과 양육행동 (A Study of Maternal Attributions and Parenting Behaviors of Children with Developmental Disabilities)

  • This study examined the role of maternal attribution in parenting behaviors of mothers who have a child with developmental disabilities. Using an attributional model, it assessed whether maternal attributions about the child's knowledge, capacity, expectation, and responsibility for behavior problems have effects on maternal behaviors of affect, authoritarian control, and overprotect. The sample consisted of 161 mothers of elementary children with developmental disabilities. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that maternal attribution about the child's capacity for misbehavior had positive influence on maternal affect and negative influence on authoritarian control behaviors, and that maternal attribution of responsibility for misbehavior positively influenced maternal authoritarian control and overprotect behaviors. Also, maternal attribution about the child's knowledge for misbehavior had negative influence on maternal overprotect behaviors. In addition, such background factors as number of disability, maternal education, and job of mother were significant predictors for maternal attribution, while maternal self-esteem was a strong significant predictor for mothering behaviors. The findings suggest the importance of maternal attributions in parenting.

인형극이 장애유아 수용 증진에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Puppetry for Improving the Acceptance of Young Children toward Young Children with Disabilities)

  • This study attempted to investigate which the effects of puppetry about disabilities for improving the acceptance of young children with disabilities. Total of 60 preschoolers served as experimental and control group and were administered pre and post test. The experimental group was presented with puppetry 6 times. The result showed that the acceptance to young children with disabilities was altered through puppetry. Significant gender difference was found in accessbility to young children with disabilities, girls were more improved than boys. However, there was no difference in perception about young children with disabilities and their classroom activity.

  • This study investigated the effect of circle activities about disabilities on preservice early childhood teachers' mainstreaming attitudes, teaching efficacy and teaching performance. Subjects were 40 preservice early childhood female teachers(20 each in the experimental and control groups). Experimental group circles met weekly for 4 hours over 24 weeks. Circle activities included viewing and discussing films and readings about disabilities, and observation and participation in mainstreaming classrooms of kindergartens and child welfare centers. Results were that the experimental group preservice teachers' attitudes and efficacy toward mainstreaming were positive in comparison with those of the control group. Experimental group preservice teachers' mainstreaming teaching performance improved by comparison with the control group.

학령 전 발달장애 자녀를 둔 어머니의 양육시간과 관련 요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on Care Time of Mothers with Preschool Children with Developmental Disabilities)

  • This study is focused on the amount of time spent on child care by mothers with preschool children with developmental disabilities. It is designed to find out how much time mothers spend taking care of their children and to identify related factors. The subjects of this study are 162 mothers of children with developmental disabilities residing in Seoul. The findings are as follows: First, mothers with preschool children with developmental disabilities spent 6 hours and 50 minutes per day caring for their children during weekdays and 6 hours and 10 minutes on weekend days. This is double the amount of time spent by the average mother with preschool children. Second, mothers spent much more time caring for their disabled children than they do for their children without disabilities. Third, determinants of a mother's time for caring their disabled child during weekdays were mother's employment, the number of children, and gender of the disabled child. On weekend days, determinants of mother's care time were the number of children and husband's help for childrearing.

  • This study investigated kindergarten teachers'experience and perception of the practice of mainstreaming for young children with disabilities. Ethnographic research methodology included participant observation and in-depth interviews. Participants were 8 teachers of classrooms mainstreaming young children with disabilities. Results were that: most mainstreaming classroom teachers perceived the necessity of the practice of mainstreaming for young children with disabilities in the kindergarten. They felt the necessity of whole mainstreaming in the kindergarten. Most mainstreaming classroom teachers recognized that mainstreaming classroom teachers need to have professional knowledge for the successful practice of mainstreaming young children with disabilities in kindergarten.

장애아 보육시설의 물리적환경 실태조사 (A Study on Physical Environment of Child Care Centers for Children with Disability)

  • Eater Seal, the child care experts, observes that children with disability significantly benefit from receiving appropriated care along side their peers. Typically developing children serve as role models from which children with disabilities team age-appropriated communications and social behavior. Therefore the children with disability can actively participate in well-designed child care settings. But unfortunately in Seoul, Korea, only 2% of children with disability are taken care of in child care centers. And even the disabled children at the child care centers are mostly mentally or emotionally disabled because the building, programs and services of the centers are restrictive to the children with severe physical disabilities. This study reviewed Korean domestic physical environment of child care centers for children with disabilities. 15 centers located in Seoul were surveyed. Our survey revealed that the accessibility to buildings is poor. There are many places with difference in height of floors. Also, there are no elevators in all buildings surveyed. Accessibility to toilet is noted as significant problem, especially wet floors in toilets. In a nursing room, a space for psychological rest and special education is needed for children with mental disability. Technical specifications on how to make buildings and facilities accessible for the children with disability should be developed. The goal of this study is to provide basic information to develop domestic design guidelines to ensure that the child care centers are safe, convenient, and usable for everyone possible.

어머니의 양육태도와 장애유아의 사회적 능력과의 관계 (The Relationship between Maternal Parenting Attitudes and Social Competence in Preschool Children with Disabilities)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between maternal parenting attitudes and social competence in preschool children with disabilities. Among 3-to 7-year-old preschool children with disabilities in Daegu, 121 pairs of mother-child subjects were selected. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in the control area of maternal parenting attitudes on PMT according to child's age. Second, there were significant differences in the teacher ratings of social competence according to the severity of disability, child's age and father's education level. Third, the creativity area of maternal attitudes was significantly correlated with social competence.

  • The study examined some statistics of children with disabilities, relevant research and education, and welfare policies undertaken for the last three decades. The changed perceptions regarding children with disabilities have led education and legislation to great improvement. As a result, the number of children who are registered as having disabilities has been increased. Also, children who received any benefits of education and welfare have been consistently risen. The noticeable features of the existing studies are summarized as follows : An increase in number, a variety of the contents, specification of the topics, and a close connection to the basic studies. In spite of the progression and improvement observed in the areas of education and welfare policy making, more practical approaches are needed in order to reflect various needs of children with disabilities and their families.
