  • Using content analysis this study examined Korean people's traditional view on children with disabilities, hoping to contribute to the selection of appropriate picture books for an understanding of disabilities in kindergartens and child care centers. Story book characters with disabilities mainly interacted with their families and village people, had lower positions, did not accomplish their work on their own, and suffered from others' anger and beating. Differences in types of disabilities were that physical disabilities were viewed positively, while mental disabilities were viewed negatively. The former had wider scope of activities and maintained more positive relationships with other characters than the latter; furthermore, the former had higher position than the latter and had cooperative interactions with people without disabilities.

  • Purpose: In 2012, the Child Welfare Act was revised to provide better support to children with severe disabilities in Japan. Previously, inpatient facilities had been classified according to the type of disabilities of patients. After the revision of the Act, however, these facilities were assigned into the category of "medical-type facilities for children with disabilities", or "welfare-type facilities for children with disabilities." The focus of the study is to evaluate the reorganization of the Child Welfare Act and to analyze the new layout of Center K after its transition from a facility for children with motional disabilities to a medical-type facility for children with disabilities. Methods: A literature review was conducted to identify the trend in the treatment for persons with disabilities and the process of policy making in Japan. Field research was performed twice in 2015 and 2016, before and after the renovation of the Center K facilities depending upon the revision of the Child Welfare Act. Results: There is an increasing tendency of the population of persons with disabilities in Japan, and the severity level of disability of children with disabilities. In the case of Center K, two types of ward constructed to meet the two types of disability has been reconstructed into three types of unit following the various severity level of disability. Implications: As a result, it could be argued that it is also necessary in Korea to reorganize the facilities for persons with disabilities to deal with the fact that the population of persons with disabilities in Korea has been growing and their degree of disabilities also getting severe.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was performed with a convenience sampling of 127 teachers from 19 daycare centers for children with disabilities and 175 teachers from 17 general daycare centers. A survey questionnaire was used to collect data, and the data were analyzed using the SPSS 17.0 program. Results: For the last one month, about 90% of the teachers working in daycare centers for children with disabilities had to care for sick children. When a child is sick, 50% of the teachers tended to contact with the parents of the child. The majority of the teachers caring for sick children experienced difficulties with no one available to give expert health care advice. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that there are many health issues in daycare centers for children with disabilities and therefore health professionals need to be available to the centers. Specifically, health management services and programs need to be developed and provided for children with disabilities.

  • The Guarantee of Rights and Support for Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act was enacted and revised in 2014. However, national measures for persons with developmental disabilities remain insufficient. In the film, "Grown Up," director Hyeyoung Jang filmed the daily life of her sister, who has developmental disabilities. She raised not only the issue of institutionalization in people with developmental disabilities in Korea but also the issue of a lack of policies that would be essential to them and their family members. In the future, I hope that as experts, child and adolescent psychiatrists in Korea will pay more attention to the lives of people with developmental disabilities outside the clinic and propose policies to help them and their family members.

Methods: There were a total 330 previous research papers about child-care inclusion, which means the practice of educating and caring for children aged 0 to 5 years old with disabilities alongside their typically developing peers at child-care centers. The studies were analyzed in terms of main research topic, subject, and research methods. Results: The major results of this study were as follow. First, a quantitative increase of the research since 2003 and a sharp increase of total research in this area since 2006 were found. Second, as a result of the main topic analysis, recognition and attitude research was the most frequently conducted, followed by the research about child-care programs, teacher and family support, and the effect of inclusive child-care. Third, more than half of the researches were done by teachers. Lastly, quantitative research methods were mainly used. Conclusion/Implications: Based on these findings, this study suggested to extend the research on inclusive child-care effect, intervention programs, non-disabled children, infants, and qualitative research.

  • This study examines the effects of project approach to promote social development of children with and without disabilities in inclusive classrooms. Participants in this study were 22 children with disabilities and 86 children without disabilities enrolled in 4 classes at two inclusive daycare centers. The experimental group implemented the project approach and the control group followed a traditional early childhood curriculum. An ANCOVA was conducted with mean difference scores in pre- and posttests between experimental and control groups. Significant differences between control and treatment groups existed in social development of children without disabilities, but no significant changes were found in children with disabilities. From the findings, we inferred that the project approach is an effective curriculum model for inclusion. Implications for classroom practices and recommendations for future research were suggested.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify how parenting stress and empowerment affect the quality of life in caregivers of children with disabilities. Methods: Caregivers assuming parenting responsibilities for children with disabilities under 18 yr of age were recruited at 8 local welfare centers, homes for children with disabilities, and parent associations in U city. They were asked to complete a questionnaire in a face to face interview or by self-report, and 265 data units were analyzed with stepwise multiple regression. Results: Parenting stress, empowerment and monthly income were statistically significant explaining 39% of the variance. Among the subconstructs of parenting stress and empowerment, parental distress ($\beta=-.42$, t=-6.45) and competence ($\beta=.30$, t=3.59) significantly influenced quality of life. Among the general characteristics, monthly income ($\beta=.10$, t=2.01) was found to be significantly related to quality of life. Conclusion: Nurses who work with children with disabilities and their caregivers need to focus on parental distress and competence to improve the quality of life of caregivers and to stimulate development in children with disabilities.
