This study investigated whether Korean mothers' emotion socialization beliefs are related to emotional functioning in children differing across gender. We interviewed Korean mothers (N = 100) of first graders (55 boys; 45 girls) about their sensitivity, their reactions to children's distress, and children's emotion regulation. Two components of emotion regulation were distinguished: regulation and negativity. Results revealed that mothers' proactive sensitivity and their supportive reactions were related to their children's regulation, whereas unsupportive reactions were related to children's negativity. Child gender moderated the associations between mothers' socialization beliefs and children's emotion regulation: mothers' proactive sensitivity was more strongly associated with competent regulation in girls than in boys. Mothers' unsupportive reactions were related to increased negativity only in girls. Results are discussed from a cultural perspective, focusing on gender differences in the links between maternal socialization and children's emotional outcomes in Korea.
This study investigated emotional regulation, motive for emotional regulation and behavior problems of children. 64 boys and 58 girls in fourth grade and their mothers were selected for the subject. The children were interviewed about eight interpersonal conflict situations, while their mothers completed the CBCL(Child Behavior Check List). Major findings were as follows: emotional regulation, motive for emotional regulation and behavior problems differed according to the children's gender. Girls used more appropriate display rules for managing negative emotions, and more often, prosocial motives than boys. While girls displayed greater immature behavior, boys displayed more hyperactive and aggressive behavior. Negative emotional regulation was the most predictable variable for boy's behavior problems. Positive emotional regulation and prosocial motives were significant variables predicting girl's behavior problems. These findings implicate that emotional regulation and motive for emotional regulation are important factors in preventing behavior problems of school-age children.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of fathers' playfulness on their children's social competence and emotional regulation, and the moderating effects of the fathers' play participation level on the relationship between his playfulness and his child's social competence and emotional regulation. Methods: The participants in this study were 139 children and their fathers. The children were aged between four and five years old attending nine preschools in Seoul. The collected data was analyzed through Pearson's correlations, and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. Results: First, fun-loving fathers had a significant effect on the cooperation and sociability of their children. Second, fun-loving fathers had a significant effect on their children's emotional regulation. Third, fathers' play participation level moderated the relationship between them enjoying silliness and their children's sociability. Fourth, fathers' play participation level moderated the relationship between them being fun-loving and their children's emotional regulation. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study address the need for a high level of fathers' play participation in relation to the development of their children's social competence and emotional regulation.
This study examined the relationships between children's cool executive function(cool EF), hot executive function(hot EF) and self-regulation according to the developmental changes. Children aged 3-5 years (N = 104) participated in this study. The participants completed cool and hot EF tasks and teachers reported on the children's cognitive regulation, emotional regulation, and behavioral regulation by means of questionnaires. The results indicated that cool EF and hot EF had different developmental patterns according to different age groups. High levels of cool/hot EF predicted better abilities in terms of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral regulation respectively. The relationship between coo/hot EF and cognitive/behavioral regulation were moderated by age, except in the case of emotional regulation. This paper also offers a detailed discussion of results and recommendations for future studies.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationship between the related variables of children's internalization and externalization of problems. A total of 709 elementary school students residing in Daegu City and Kyungpook province completed questionnaires which assessed family interaction functions, emotional regulation, self-control, and internalization and externalization of problems. The sample variance-covariance matrix was analyzed using AMOS 19.0, and a maximum likelihood minimization function. Goodness of fit was evaluated using the SRMS, RMSEA, and its 90% confidence interval, CFI, and TLI. The results were as follows : First, the function of family interaction, and emotional regulation had a significant direct effect on the internalization of problems. Moreover, emotional regulation, self-control and internalization of problems had a statistically substantial direct effect on the externalization of problems. Second, family interaction functions did not have a statistically significant direct on children's externalization of problems, although it may well have an indirect effect on children's externalization of problems through emotional regulation and self-control. Finally, self-control did not enjoy a direct effect on children's internalization of problems.
The purposes of this study were firstly, to examine the emergence of complex strategies for emotional regulation in 3 and 4 years old children, and secondly, to analyze the corresponding relationship of the preschoolers' strategies for emotional regulation and their mothers' responses. The subjects comprised 66 preschoolers(33 boys, 33 girls) and their mothers in J city. The results were as follows. First, the preschoolers' strategies for emotional regulation in frustrating episodes occurred in the following order; instrumental behaviors, cognitive reappraisal, distraction behaviors, and comforting behaviors. Second, the mother's responses to frustrating episodes occurred in the following order; cognitive reappraisal, instrumental behaviors, comforting behaviors, and distraction behaviors. Third, the corresponding relationship of the preschooler's strategies for emotional regulation and the mothers' responses to frustrating episodes were found to be of a similar patterns (e.g. preschoolers' cognitive reappraisal strategy and mothers' cognitive reappraisal response).
This study examines child emotional intelligence in relation to mother's emotional expressiveness and reaction to child negative emotions. A sample of 352 children and mothers from 4 elementary schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi participated in the study. Child emotional intelligence and mother's reaction to child negative emotions were evaluated by child-report, and mother's emotional expressiveness was assessed by mother-report. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, two-way analysis of variances, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analyses. The findings were as follows. First, mothers of boys showed more oversensitive-reaction to child negative emotions than mothers of girls. Mothers of 6th-graders showed more emotion-minimizin-greaction to child negative emotions than mothers of 5th-graders. Second, girls showed a higher level of overall emotional intelligence than boys. Girls showed a higher level of emotion expression and emotion regulation than boys. The 5th-graders showed higher level of emotion expression than 6th-graders; however, 6th graders showed a higher level of emotion perception than 5th-graders. Third, more emotion-coaching-reaction and less oversensitive-reaction by mothers predicted a better emotional intelligence of children. A mother's appropriate emotional socialization behaviors associated with child emotional intelligence were discussed.
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between children's emotional regulation, perceived self-competence and behavior problem. The subjects were 357 elementary school students in Busan. The questionnaires on children's emotional regulation, perceived self-competence and behavior problem were used. The results were as follows: (1) According to sex, there were significant differences in children's emotional regulation scores(venting and support pursuit), and according to birth order, there were significant differences in children's perceived self-competence scores and behavior problem scores. (2) There were significant correlations between children's emotional regulation scores and behavior problem scores, and also there were significant correlations between children's perceived self-competence scores and behavior problem scores. (3) Children's perceived self-competence and emotional regulation explained children's anxiety behavior, withdrawal behavior, aggressive behavior, distracted behavior and regressive behavior.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of socio-demographic variables, family emotional environment and maternal discipline style on school children's emotional regulation. Subjects of this study consisted 953 elementary school students drawn from 4 elementary schools in Cheong-ju city and Cheongwon-gun. Data were analyzed by the methods frequency, percentage, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical regression using SPSSWIN 12.0 program. The results of this study were as follows: First, girls used greater problem-focused coping than boys did. Children in sixth grade used more problem-focused coping regulation compared to those in fourth grade. When children perceived higher level of family communication, emotional support, participation of family rituals, family worries, and parental conflict, they were more likely to use problem-focused coping. Additionally, both maternal supportive discipline and behavioral controlling discipline styles increased children's problem-focused coping. Second, girls presented greater emotional venting than boys did. Children in sixth grade expressed higher level of emotional venting compared to those in fourth grade. While family communication, family worries, and parental conflict increased children's emotional venting, family emotional support and participation of family rituals decreased it. Only mothers' psychological controlling discipline positively predicted children's emotional venting. Third, girls presented higher level of children's aggressive expression than boys did. The lower level of family support increased children's aggressive expression. Higher level of family worries and parental conflict increased it as well. Also, children's aggressive expression was positively predicted by mothers' psychological controlling discipline. Fourth, girls presented greater avoidance than boys did. Children in sixth grade expressed higher level of emotional avoidance compared to those in fourth grade. In family emotional environment, while family support lowered children's emotional avoidance, family worries and parental conflict increased it. Moreover, mothers' psychological and behavioral controlling discipline styles positively explained children's emotional avoidance. In conclusion, family emotional environment was the strongest factor to predict school children's emotional regulation among other variables.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of paternal parenting sense of competence, paternal satisfaction, conflict-coping behaviors, and preschooler's emotional regulation on preschooler's social skills. Participants were 85 5- to 6-year-old preschoolers(41 boys, 44 girls) and their fathers. The Social Skill Rating Scale(Suh, 2004), the Parenting Sense of Competence(Shin & Chung, 1998), the Parental Satisfaction Scale(Seo & Lee, 2002), Conflict-coping behaviors(Cho & Kim, 2000) and the Emotional regulation(Kim & Kim, 1999) were used. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The major findings were summarized as follows: (1) there were no differences between the boys' and girls' social skills. (2) parental satisfaction and emotional regulation explained social skills - cooperation. (3) conflict-coping behaviors(rationality and request for others) and emotional regulation explained social skills - self-control. (4) emotional regulation explained social skills - assertion. In conclusion, parental satisfaction, conflict-coping behaviors, and preschooler's emotional regulation influence differently according to the subscale of preschooler's social skills.
