Clinical Diagnoses, Psychopathology, and Neurocognitive Tests in Children Referred for Scholastic Difficulties and Their Parents (기초학습부진으로 의뢰된 일 광역시의 일반학급 초등학생의 심리, 정신과적 평가 및 부모의 특성)

  • Objectives:This study examined the prevalence of psychiatric problems in children with scholastic difficulties who had been referred for mental health services from the Office of Education in Ulsan Metropolitan City. Methods:Child psychiatrists evaluated the referred children using the DSM-IV. Evaluation tools included the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III, the Children's Depression Inventory, the Korean form of the State-trait anxiety Inventory for children, the ADHD rating. Results:Seventy-six children consisting of 64 boys (84.2%) and 12 girls (15.8%) participated in the study. The average age was 10.3 (SD=0.93) years old. Approximately 74% of the children referred for scholastic difficulties were diagnosed with mental retardation. The Axis I diagnosis among these children were ADHD (86.8%), depression (21.1%), learning disorder (9.2%), communication disorder (4.8%), pervasive developmental disorder (3.6%), internet addiction (1.3%), and mood disorder (1.3%). Their overall measure according to the Child Depression Inventory was 22.7 (SD=16.8), that for the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children was 33.3 (SD=7.9)/32.4 (SD=9.5), and that for the ADHD rating scale was 18.9 (SD=10.9). Conclusion:These results suggest that many children with scholastic difficulties have both complex psychiatric and educational problems.

Relationship on Social Maladaptation, Depression, Ego Resilience and Daily Life Satisfaction of Intermarried Korean Men (국제결혼한 한국남성의 사회부적응 우울 및 자아탄력성과 일상생활만족에 대한 연구)

  • The purposes of this study were to find the correlation of social maladaptation, depression, ego resilience and daily life satisfaction, and to explore the mediating role of ego resilience between social maladaptation, depression and daily life satisfaction. The subject of the survey was 184 intermarried Korean men. The data were analyzed with frequency, Pearson's correlation and structural equation modeling by SPSS and AMOS. Instruments were social maladapatation and depression of Shin(2001)'s Mental Health Scale, Block and Kremen(1996)'s Ego Resilience Scale, and Bradburn(1969)'s Structure of Psychological well-being, and Olson and Barnes(1982)' Quality of Life. The major findings were as follows: Social maladapataion and depression were negatively correlated with ego resilience and daily life satisfaction. Ego resilience was positively correlated with daily life satisfaction. Ego resilience mediated the effects of social maladaptation, depression and daily life satisfaction. Social maladaptation and depression influenced ego resilience. Ego resilience influenced positively daily life satisfaction. In conclusion, it is important to intervene intermarried Korean men's daily life satisfaction through special education program and counseling in order to build ego resilience.

Parental Emotion Socialization in Military Families

  • Reintegration after military deployment is a significant family stressor. Guided by Eisenberg's heuristic model of socialization of emotions, the present study examined the relationships between parental emotion socialization, children's emotionality and children's internalizing symptoms using a military sample. It was also investigated whether gender of parents and children impacted parental emotion socialization. Questionnaires were gathered from 248 families with a 4-12 year old child (M = 7.78) in which a parent had been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Children's emotionality was positively correlated with children's internalizing symptoms and non-supportive parental emotion socialization. Independent-t-tests and two-way ANOVAs showed that mothers reported more supportive reactions towards children's negative emotions than fathers. Father reports of expressive encouragement were positively associated with child reports of anxiety and depression. Child gender did not influence how parents responded to negative emotions. Implications and future directions were discussed.

A Study on the Relationships of Mother's Empathy in Mother-Child Play with Parenting Stress and with Other Variables (놀이상황에서 보이는 어머니의 공감적 행동과 양육스트레스 및 관련 변인에 대한 연구)

  • This study was performed to clarify which variables affected a mother‘s empathic behavior shown in a mother-child play session. Mother’s empathy was videotaped and recorded during mother-child twenty minute play sessions. The variables considered in the research were the mother‘s parenting stress, age and education level, and the child’s sex and birth order. Twenty four mothers volunteered to participate in this study. The age of their children was restricted to 5 years. The results were as follows; First, mothers were verbally more accepting to their second or third child, and allowed their second of third child to lead more than their first child. And older mothers were more likely to accept their children's lead. Seconds, the mothers' parenting stress for acceptance of their children and stress of depression were higher in college graduate mothers than high school graduate mothers. Third, the mother's empathy and level of parenting stress did not show any significant relationships.

The Effects of Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on the Improvement of Depression and Anxiety in Adolescents with Problematic Internet Use

  • Objectives: The overuse of the Internet among adolescents has increased dramatically in recent years, leading to pathological or problematic Internet use. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for the treatment of problematic Internet use, particularly for adolescents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of group CBT for problematic Internet use in adolescents. Methods: A total of 17 patients aged 12-17 years who met Young's diagnostic questionnaire criteria of problematic Internet use participated in a school-based eight-session group CBT program. The level of problematic Internet use among participating students was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Scale (IAS). Depression and anxiety levels were evaluated using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), respectively. Each construct was assessed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and at a one-month follow-up visit. Statistical significance was based on a p-value of <0.05. Results: Immediately after the program, the IAS, CDI, and State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) scores were significantly lower than before the program. At the one-month follow-up assessment, the IAS scores remained low, and the CDI and SAI scores were even lower than immediately after the program. Conclusion: Group CBT was effective for adolescents with problematic Internet use, and was also demonstrated to improve depression and anxiety.

The Moderating Effect of Teacher Relationship Adaptation Between Adolescents' Domestic Abuse Experience and Depression (청소년들의 가정학대 경험과 우울감의 관계에서 교사관계 적응의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the moderating effect of teacher relationship adaptation between adolescents' domestic abuse experience and depression. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 495 adolescents in high school in S city, Chungcheongnam-do, and the data collected were analyzed by using mean comparison analysis, correlation analysis, and moderating effect analysis. The major findings are as follows. First, depression of adolescents differed according to gender and academic achievement. Second, domestic abuse experience and depression showed significant positive correlation, but teacher relationship adaptation had a negative correlation with domestic abuse experience and depression. Third, the result of moderating effect analysis showed that the teacher relationship adaptation had a moderating effect on the relationship between domestic abuse experience and depression. Finally, based on this study, we discussed ways to reduce the depression of adolescents.

Relationship between Daily Life Conflicts, Depression, Family Resilience, and Marital Happiness of Intermarried Korean Men (다문화가족 남편의 일상생활갈등, 우울 및 가족탄력성과 결혼행복과의 관계)

The subjects of the survey were 184 intermarried Korean men. The data were analyzed with frequency, Pearson's correlation and structural equation modeling by SPSS and AMOS. The instruments included Jang (2007)'s Daily Life Conflict, Shin (2001)'s Mental Health Scale, Yu (2004)'s Family Health Scale, and Natham et al. (1973)'s Marital Happiness Scale. The major findings were as follows: Daily life conflicts and depression were negatively correlated with family resilience and marital happiness. Family resilience was positively correlated with marital happiness. Family resilience mediated the effects of daily life conflicts, depression and marital happiness. Daily life conflicts and depression influenced family resilience. In conclusion, in order to build family resilience it is important to intervene in intermarried Korean men's marital happiness through special education programs and counseling.

Psychiatric Problems in the Student Victims of School Violence and Their Parents (학교폭력 피해학생과 부모의 정신의학적 문제)

  • Objectives : This study was conducted in order to investigate the influences of school violence on the mental health of student victims and their parents. Methods : A total of 56 (aged 7-18) student victims and their parents were selected to participate in a survey. The students had experienced school violence from June 2012 to October 2013. They completed a set of self-report questionnaires, including socio-demographic characteristics, family relationship, Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Child Depression Inventory (CDI), Beck Depression Inventory, Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, and Parental Bonding Instrument to evaluate psychiatric complications and to understand the emotional bonding between them. Results : The student's level of impact of event was significantly related to the parent's level of impact of event (p<.001). The student's high CDI score showed positive correlation with high level of impact of event (p<.001). In addition, higher level of the student's perceived emotional support and understandability of family showed association with lower level of impact of event (p<.01, p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that the psychiatric sequelae of school violence is seriously affected by family support and parent's level of impact of event. Therefore, more active intervention is needed for both students and their parents.

INFLUENCES OF PARENTING ATTITUDE ON THE DEPRESSIVE TRAIT IN YOUNG ADOLESCENTS (부모의 양육태도가 중학생의 우울성향에 미치는 영향)

  • Objects : This study was conducted to investigate the relationships between parenting style and depressive trait in adolescents. Methods : 287 Middle school students were asked to complete self-report questionnaires including the Parental Bonding Instrument(PBI) and the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Results : Relations between two sets of variables were examined by means of the Pearson's correlation coefficient. It was suggested that the relationship with their mothers had more influence on the depressive trait of adolescents. The mean scores of children's depression inventory were significantly higher in group whose parents had been overprotective and less careful, than whose parents had been careful and not overprotective. Conclusion : The results support that the adolescents' depression is significantly related to the parenting style. Among parental bonding types, the high care-low overprotection type was most favorable and the low care-high overprotection type was worst.

  • This study was purposed to examine the effect of parents' overprotection on students' depression by moderating their avoidance coping. It was conducted self-reporting survey of 230 students from provincial universities. The measuring tools used in this study were PBI(The Parental Bonding Instrument), CES-D(The Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale), Avoidance coping Style Scale. We used the analysis method SPSS 21.0 to calculate frequency, percentage and internal consistency reliability. To verify this research, we executed a correlation analysis and a hierarchical mid-term analysis. The results of the study are as follows. First, parents' overprotection, depression and avoidance coping all have a static correlation. Second, it has been confirmed that avoidance coping is a moderating variable in relations between parents' overprotection and depression. Study limitations and suggestions for further research are discussed.
