  • The damage rates of peach pyralid moth(Dichocrocis punctiferalis), which damages the chestnut fruits, were investigated annually from 1995 to 2010 according to year, region, and maturity. The damage rate by D. punctiferalis was the highest (34.5%) in 1998 and was the lowest (17.9%) in 2000. The pattern of the damage rate showed a repeating three-year cycle. There was a negative correlation ($-0.6261^*$) between rainfall and damage rate. There was a positive correlation ($0.5826^*$) between temperature and damage rate. The average damage rate of all surveyed regions was 22.2%. Of the surveyed areas, Hapcheon had the highest at 27% and Hamyang had the lowest at 15.0%. The damage rate of chestnut fruit depending on the maturity was 26.1% in an early maturing cultivar (Dantaek), and 19.3% and 21.1% in a late maturing cultivar (Eungi) and a medium maturing cultivar (Chukpa), respectively.

  • This study was conducted to develop environmental techniques to reduce chestnut insect pests. The study sites were selected in intensive chestnut orchards of Jinju city, Gyeongnam province. In early and middleripening cultivars of chestnut tree, the damage of chestnut fruits by Dichocrocis punctiferalis was significantly lower in wromstop than other treatment such as Capture-machine, Nemacatch and Naphthalene (p<0.05), while there was no significant difference among treatments in late-ripening cultivars. The control effect of D. punctiferalis showed the highest in wormstop treanment with 90.68% and 80.58% in early and middle-ripening cultivars. The control effects for Curculio sikkimensis in late-ripening cultivars of chestnut tree was 80.58% in Nemacatch and 77.90% in Wormstop treatment.

  • This study examined the economic effects of low tree-form culture, Cost-Benefit analysis was done based on additional costs and benefits from investment in low tree-form culture. In addition, this study analysed the sensitivity of profitability due to the changes in chestnut prices and wages. Investment in low tree-form culture was analysed to be profitable in Chungju, Gongju and Buyeo areas but in Jinju area. Sensitivity analysis of changes in prices and wages also showed that investment in low tree-form culture was economically feasible in Chungju, Gongju and Buyeo areas except for Jinju area.

  • Occurrence of scarabs at sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki var. Fuyu) orchards was investigated by mercury light traps every one week interval in several areas in Gyeongnam province including, Jinju, Sacheon, Sancheong, and Gimhae, from April to September in 2000 and 2001. In addition, damage of persimmon by scarabs was observed every ten days interval at three orchards in Jinju and at one in Gimhae from late May to late October. Although sixteen species of 12 genera were attracted to the traps, species and number of catches were different according to orchards and years. Holotrichia morosa was most dominant in Jinju, Sacheon, and Sancheong. Total number of scarabs attracted to the traps was highest at the orchard surrounded by chestnut orchards in Sancheong. Fruits of sweet persimmon were not damaged by scarabs at the studied orchards. However, leaves and calyxes were slightly damaged by Adoretus tenuimaculatus. Maximum average numbers of the damaged leaves and calyxes throughout the year by A. tenuimaculatus were 0.33 leaves from 10 new shoots and 0.07 calyxes from 15 fruits. Gametis jucunda and Popillia mutans damaged flowers and calyxes. Maximum average numbers of damaged flowers and calyxes by these 2 species were the same as 0.03 from 15 flowers and 15 calyxes, respectively. These levels of damage suggest that the scarabs are not economically injurious to sweet persimmon fruits in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to provide a fundamental information for a income raise of agricultural and mountain villagers and a policy planning by analyzing 145 chestnut producing farms in Korea. The results of this study are as follows : 1. Though the proportion of forest by-products in farm household economy was very slight, it is very important for agricultural and mountain villagers who have relatively lower income level to become a valuable income source. 2. As chestnut cultivating orchards have very small-scale that account for 50.0% of 0.5 to 1.0 hectares and 40.3% of 1.0 to 3.0 hectares reaching 90.3% of total farmers, the small-scale ownership makes the normality and rationalization of management difficult, and therefore the economity of scale has to be accomplished. 3. The difficulties on chestnut cultivating management were in order of the following ; Labour-power shortage(38.5%), desease and pest demage(24.8%), economity(15.2%), management(11.7%), inferiority of site condition(5.9%), technical acquirement(3.8%). 4. In the matter of storaging facilities, 87.6% of total surveyed farmers were recognizing the need of storaging facilities, but only 12.4 of surveyed farmers were possessing these facilities, and therefore the measurement has to be considered such as the forest associations invests to cold storaging facilities unable to privately invest, in order to increase a receiving price of producers.
