The effects of the presence of a submerged plant, Zizania latifolia, on physico-chemical characteristics, including Eh, pH, and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sediments were studied under pot culture condition. It was shown that Eh value at reduced layer of the sediments was higher in the planted pots than in the non-planted. It was also revealed that $NH_4^+-N$ concentration of the sediments in the planted pots was lower than that of the non-planted, which might be due to the uptake by the plants. In contrast, $NO_3^--N$ concentration in the sediment increased in the presence of the plants compared to the non-planted, which might be attributed to oxygen released from the roots to the reduced layer. The concentration of organic phosphorus in the sediments was much higher than that of NAIP at the beginning of the planting experiment. However, at the end of the experiment, it was reversed; NAIP concentration was much higher than that of organic phosphorus, possibly indicating the transformation of organic phosphorus to NAIP during the experimental period. Both concentrations of $NH_4^+-N$ and $PO_4^{3-}-P$ in the overlying and percolated water were lower in the planted pots than in the non-planted. The concentration of $NO_3^--N$ in the percolated water, however, was higher in the planted pots than in the non-planted. The data was discussed with regard to the potential effects of a submerged plant on dynamics of phosphorus and nitrogen in the rhizosphere of the sediment.
In biological systems, the mineral that forms hard tissue is of an apatitic nature, and hydroxyapatite($Ca_5OH(PO_4)_3$: HA) is generally considered as the prototype for such a mineral. Thus, the precipitation of HA, having biological implications, has been the subject of several investigations. Crystal growth studies using HA seeds in supersaturated solutions have enhanced our understanding of the process and mechanism involved in seeded crystal growth. From these studies, it has become apparent that the precipitation rate of HA onto the seed crystals depends on the various conditions, especially on the additives. The relation between the supersaturated solution containing fluoride and the process of HA crystal growth enhances the understanding of mechanism of HA crystal growth. Until recently, the studies have been on the crystal growth of enamel minerals and synthetic HA seeds in the supersaturated solution containing 1~2 ppm fluoride. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the effect that fluoride of high concentration has on the crystal growth kinetics of HA. In order to produce the composition found in the secretory enamel fluid, experimental solutions of 1mM Ca, 3mM P, and 100mM Tris as background electrolyte were used. Then this experimental solutions were added to 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ppm fluoride. The effect of fluoride at high concentrations on the precipitation was examined in a bench-top crystal growth model adopting a miniaturized reaction column. Chemical analysis was employed for characterization of working solutions before and after the experimentation. Remarkable findings were : 1) the amount of crystal growth was gradually accelerated as the fluoride concentration increased until 6 ppm, but decreased in 8 and 10 ppm fluoride; 2) the amount of fluoride ion consumed in crystal formation was constant despite the increase in fluoride concentration.

The disinfection of drinking water to control microbial contaminants results in the formation of secondary chemical contaminants, DBPs (disinfection by-products). It was studied the formation pattern of DBPs in drinking raw water after hypochlorite, chlorine disinfectant, was added in this study. It was determined TOC (total organic carbon), residual chlorine, turbidity and DBPs in raw water from Han-river during 1~14 days. Total DBPs was $101.3ng/m{\ell}$ (789.6 nM) after 7days and THMs (trihalomethanes) are the dominant portion of 69%. HAAs (haloacetic acids) and chloral hydrate were determined 19% and 10% respectively, and HANs (haloacetonitriles), HKs (haloketones) and chloropicrin were analyzed in trace level. Chloroform occupied about 89% in total THMs in concentration of $61.5ng/m{\ell}$, 95% of HANs was DCAN (dichloroacetonitrile) in $0.72ng/m{\ell}$, 50% of HAAs was TCAA (trichloroacetic acid). On the study of relationship in formation among the DBPs, HANs forms with THMs competitively to the point of the concentration of $40ng/m{\ell}$ of THMs. For HAAs, it did not show the prominent tendency. But it was observed that the compounds of large oxidation state are formed at first, and becomes to the compounds of low oxidation states.

In order to measure the deposition velocity of $I_2$ vapor for radish plants and its translocation factor for their roots, radish plants were exposed to $I_2$ vapor for 80 min. at different growth stages between 29 and 53 d after sowing. The exposure was performed in a transparent chamber during the morning time. Deposition velocities ($ms^{-1}$) were on the whole in the range of $1.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}2.0{\times}10^{-4}$ showing an increasing tendency with an increase in the biomass density. The results showed some agreement with existing reports that a higher relative humidity would lead to a higher deposition velocity. The acquired deposition velocities were lower than by factors of several tens than some field measurements probably due to a very low wind speed (about $0.2\;ms^{-1}$) in the chamber. Translocation factors (ratio of the total iodine in the roots at harvest to the total plant deposition), estimated in a more or less conservative way, were $1.3{\times}10^{-3}$ for an exposure at 29 d after sowing and $5.0{\times}10^{-3}$ for an exposure at 53 d after sowing. In using the present experimental data, meteorological conditions and chemical and physical forms of iodine need to be carefully considered.
In this study, we investigated the permeation property of single gases ($N_2$, $O_2$, $SF_6$, $CF_4$ through hollow fiber polymeric membrane (PSF, PC, PI) as a function of pressure and temperature to decide operating condition for $SF_6$ gas separation process. The results showed the gas permeation varied differentlydepending on the properties of gases and membrane. When permeance of each gases was represented as a function of temperature and pressure in 3 dimensional space, the surface of permeance was shown approximately flat. Thus, we established permeance models with forms of first-and second-order polynomial. These two models showed high goodness of fit. This indicates that the two polynomial models have enough applicability to predict the gas separation process.

The chemical compositions and textural relationships of the Nb-Zr oxide minerals including pyrochlore [ideally (Ca,Na)$_2$Nb$_2$O$\sub$6/(OH,F), with up to 24% UO$_2$ and 16% Ta$_2$O$\sub$5/] and baddeleyite [ideally ZrO$_2$, with up to 6% Nb$_2$O$\sub$5/] in the Sokli carbonatite complex, Kola Peninsula, Arctic are described. These two minerals in carbonatites are the major hosts for the HFSEs such as U, Th, Ta, Nb, Zr and Hf and thus are interest both economically and petrologically. The Sokli carbonatite complex (360-370 Ma) in Northern Finland, which forms a part of the Paleozoic Kola Alkaline Province (KAP), is mainly composed of multi-stages of carbonatite and phoscorite associations (P1-C1 P2-C2, P3-C3, D4 and D5) surrounded by altered ultramafic rocks (olivinite and pyroxenite) and cut by numerous small dikes of ultramafic lamprophyre. The Sokli complex contains the highest concentration in niobium and probably in tantalum, which are economically very important to modern steel technology, among the ultramafic-alkaline complexes of the KAP. Pyrochlore and baddeleyite mostly concentrate in the phoscorites. Pyrochlores in the Sokli complex are generally rounded octahedra and cubes in shape, red brown to grey yellow in color, and 0.2 to 5 mm in size. They are found in all calcite carbonatites, phoscorites and dolomite carbonatites, except P1-C1 rocks. These pyrochlores display remarkable zonations which depend on host rock compositions, and have significant compositional variations with evolution of the Sokli complex. The common variation scheme is that (1) early pyrochlore is highly enriched in U and Ta; (2) these elements decrease abruptly in the intermediate stage, while Th and Ce increase, and (3) late stage pyrochlore is low in U, Ta, Th, and Ce, and correspondingly high in Nb. Baddeleyites in the Sokli complex occur in the early P1-C1 and P2-C2 rocks and rarely in P3. They crystallized earlier than pyrochlores, and occasionally show post-magmatic corrosion and replacement. The FeO and TiO$_2$ contents of baddeleyites are much lower than those of the other terrestrial and lunar baddeleyites, whereas Nb$_2$O$\sub$5/ and Ta$_2$O$\sub$5/ contents are the highest among the reported compositions. Ta/Nb and Zr/Nb ratios of pyrochlores and baddeleyites decrease towards later stage facies, which is in accordance with the whole rock compositions. The variation of Ta/Nb and Zr/Nb ratios of pyrochlores and baddeleyites is considered to be a good indicator to trace an evolution of the carbonatite complexes.
This paper describes the changes of characteristics of pig slurry according to storing depth. Most of the substances containing pollutants, such as were Management of manure and wastewater from animal confinement facilities is a critical factor for pollution control. With proper treatment processing method in both solid and liquid forms, it can be used as a fertilizer and soil conditioner. In Korea, liquid-manure handling system is very popular because its treatment and application is easy and labor saving. In the storage tank treatment, the period of fermentation process and solids-liquid separation averages six months and the supernatant liquid is being used as a fertilizer. In this study, the changes in chemical characteristics of pig slurry at varying depths of the storage tank were investigated. Results showed that the pH value of the fermented pig slurry was > 7, while the major pollutants such as BOD, SS, N and P were highest in the bottom of the tank. Therefore, the above findings proved that varying depths in the storage tank can influence the concentration of pollutants of the fermented pig slurry.

The characteristics of deposits formed by the Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon, dissecting the mountains such as Byungpung Mt. and Samin Mt. in western part of Damyang county, Jeonmam province. Results from field survey and bore hole logging by KIGAM are used in interpreting depositional environment, in this study. By the result of deposits near of the channels Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon, and main channel of Youngsan River, the depth of sediment layers in this area is 4~7m, far thinner than formerly estimated. Weathered material of local rocks forms the base of the sedimentary layers. It can be assumed that the location channel of the Youngsan river has been stable ever since the start of the sedimentary events. Sediment particles of tributaries are angular than those of Youngsan River. Particles are larger and sorting is poor. It is interpreted as mount flash flood deposits. Main sources of sediments at the valley bottom or deposition dominated area are the terrace deposits or slope deposits over the gentle foot-slope or front of surrounding mountains. Some particles show polygonal cracking on the surface originated from the strong chemical weathering, while most of these has high angularity. It means various geomorphic processes operate to produce and transport the particles in this area.Isolated hills within the sedimentary plains are made with weathered materials of local bedrock. In the case of foot-slope of the hills, thin sedimentary layers are found. So it can be concluded that surface features of deposition zone of the Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon is formed by the filling of lower part of the valley and its feature partly controlled by the relief of the weathering front.
Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted, emerging Flavivirus that causes Guillain-$Barr{\acute{e}}$ syndrome and microcephaly in adults and fetuses, respectively. Since ZIKV was first isolated in 1947, severe outbreaks have occurred at various places worldwide, including Yap Island in 2007, French Polynesia in 2013, and Brazil in 2015. Although incidences of ZIKV infection and dissemination have drastically increased, the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of ZIKV have not been sufficiently studied. In addition, despite extensive research, the exact roles of individual ZIKV genes in the viral evasion of the host innate immune responses remain elusive. Besides, it is still possible that more than one ZIKV-encoded protein may negatively affect type I interferon (IFN) induction. Hence, in this study, we aimed to determine the modulations of the IFN promoter activity, induced by the MDA5/RIG-I signaling pathway, by over-expressing individual ZIKV genes. Our results show that two nonstructural proteins, NS2A and NS4A, significantly down-regulated the promoter activity of IFN-${\beta}$ by inhibiting multiple signaling molecules involved in the activation of IFN-${\beta}$. Interestingly, while NS2A suppressed both full-length and constitutively active RIG-I, NS4A had inhibitory activity only on full-length RIG-I. In addition, while NS2A inhibited all forms of IRF3 (full-length, regulatory domain-deficient, and constitutively active), NS4A could not inhibit constitutively active IRF3-5D. Taken together, our results showed that NS2A and NS4A play major roles as antagonists of MDA5/RIG-I-mediated IFN-${\beta}$ induction and more importantly, these two viral proteins seem to inhibit induction of the type I IFN responses in differential mechanisms. We believe this study expands our understanding regarding the mechanisms via which ZIKV controls the innate immune responses in cells and may pave the way to development of ZIKV-specific therapeutics.
A new Korean standard for the determination of Cr(VI) in soils has been officially published as ES 07408.1 in 2009. This analytical method is based on the hot alkaline digestion and colorimetric detection prescribed by U.S. EPA method 3060A and 7196A. The hot alkaline digestion accomplished using 0.28 M $Na_2CO_3$ and 0.5 M NaOH solution (pH 13.4) at $90{\sim}95^{\circ}C$ determines total Cr(VI) in soils extracting all forms of Cr(VI), including water-soluble, adsorbed, precipitated, and mineral-bound chromates. This aggressive alkaline digestion, however, proved to be problematic for certain soils which contain large amounts of soluble humic substances or active manganese oxides. Cr(III) could be oxidized to Cr(VI) by manganese oxides during the strong alkaline extraction, resulting in overestimation (positive error) of Cr(VI). In contrast, Cr(VI) reduction by dissolved humic matter or Fe(II) could occur during the neutralization and acidic colorimetric detection procedure, resulting in underestimation (negative error) of Cr(VI). Futhermore, dissolved humic matter hampered the colorimetric detection of Cr(VI) using UV/Vis spectrophotometer due to the strong coloration of the filtrate, resulting in overestimation (positive error) of Cr(VI). Without understanding the mechanisms of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) transformation during the analysis it could be difficult to operate the experiment in laboratory and to evaluate the Cr(VI) results. For this reason, in this paper we described the theoretical principles and limitations of Cr(VI) analysis and provided useful guidelines for laboratory work and Cr(VI) data analysis.
