  • In the wastewater treatment experiment by anaerobic-aerobic packed bed unit, it was found that the high and stable removal efficiency of nitrogen could be obtained. The extent of nitrogen removal gradually decreased with the rise of recycle ratio and DO concentration. On the other hand, the extent of phosphorus increased with the increase of DO concentration. COD showed high removal efficiency over the entire range tested. The simulation of T-N behavior was carried out satisfactorily by using the kinetic equations for biofilm and the reactor model which considered the packed bed as a plug flow reactor.

  • A three phase fluidized bed bioreactor immobilized with Thiobacillus sp. IW was tested to remove hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan with high loading rate. In a single gas treatment, the bioreactor removed 92- 98% of hydrogen sulfide with loading rate of 15- 66 g/l/h and removed 87-98% of methylmercaptan with loading rate of 14-60 gl/sup -1/h/sup -1/. In the mixed gas treatment, the removal efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan maintained at 89-99% for various inlet loading rates and were not affected by the inlet loading ratio of both gases in low loading rates. When the inlet concentration of methylmercaptan increased 3.8 times and was maintained for 30 h to observe the response of the bioreactor to sudden environmental change, the removal efficiency of methylmercaptan was maintained at an average of 91%.

  • The mixed gas of Hydrogen and Oxygen is gained from water electrolysis reaction. It has constant volume ratio 2 : 1 Hydrogen and Oxygen, and it is used as a source of thermal energy by combustion reaction. This gas has better characteristics in the field of economy, efficiency of energy, and environmental intimacy than acetylene gas and LPG used for gas welding machine. So several studies of this gas are actively in progress nowadays. The object of this study is the optimization of power condition in the side of electrical for the high efficiency of water electrolysis equipment. First, chemical analysis of electrolysis is conducted, and the relation of electrical energy and chemical energy is quantitatively investigated. For basic experiment, unit electrode of singular electrolysis electrode is manufactured and experimented, results are compared and analyzed with simulation, and the electrolysis is electrically equivalent.

  • The treatment performances of anaerobic-aerobic activated sludge process were investigated under various operation conditions. The treatment system proposed in this study gave a relatively stable performance against hourly change of the flow rate and showed a satisfactory removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds under experimental conditions. The average removal efficiency of total nitrogen gradually decreased as the influent total nitrogen concentration was increased. High C/N ratio of the wastewater was required for the complete removal of nitrogen. Glucose as a carbon source was more efficient than starch and the removal ability for all components become higher with the increase of the fraction of glucose.

  • In this study, poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) microparticles containing gemcitabine hydrochloride were prepared by a supercritical fluid process, called aerosol solvent extraction system (ASES), utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide as antisolvent. The influence of process parameters such as temperature, pressure, $CO_2$ and solution flow rate, solution concentration, and feed ratio of drug to polymer on the morphology and characteristics of the microparticles was studied in detail. The gemcitabine-loaded microparticles exhibited a spherical shape with a smooth surface. The entrapment efficiency of gemcitabine increased with increasing temperature, solution concentration and $CO_2$ flow rate and with decreasing drug/polymer feed ratio. The maximum drug loading obtained from the ASES process was found to be about 11%. The ASES-processed PLLA microparticles containing gemcitabine showed a relatively high initial burst due to the presence of surface pores on the microparticles and the poor affinity between drug and polymer.

  • In this study, a tandem water and hexane washing process was developed to improve the recovery efficiency of paclitaxel derived from Taxus chinensis. The polar impurities contained in the sample were effectively removed by washing with water at a sample/water ratio of 1:40 (w/v) for 10 min. In addition, the non-polar impurities were effectively removed by washing with hexane at a sample/hexane ratio of 1:160 (w/v) for 20 min. A high purity of paclitaxel (>30.0%) was obtained in a short operating time (~30 min) by sequential washing with water and hexane.

  • This study is purposed to analyze thermodynamic properties on the hydrogen production by ethylene glycol steam reforming. Various reaction conditions of temperatures(300~1,600 K), feed compositions(steam/carbon= 0.5~4.5), and pressures(1~30 atm) were applied to investigate the effects of the reaction conditions on the thermodynamic properties of dimethyl ether steam reforming. An endothermic steam reforming competed with an exothermic water gas shift reaction and an exothermic methanation within the applied reaction condition. Hydrogen production was initiated at the temperature of 400 K and the production rate was promoted at temperatures exceeding 500 K. An increase of steam to carbon ratio(S/C) in feed mixture over 1.0 resulted in the increase of the water gas shift reaction, which lowered the formation of carbon monoxide. The maximum hydrogen yield with minimizing loss of thermodynamic conversion efficiency was achieved at the reaction conditions of a temperature of 900 K and a steam to carbon ratio of 3.0.

  • Characteristics of an autothermal reformer at various operating parameters have been studied in this paper. Numerical method has been used, and simulation model has been developed for the analysis. Full Combustion reaction, Steam Reforming(SR) reaction, Water-Gas Shift(WGS) reaction, and Direct Steam Reforming(DSR) reaction are assumed as dominant chemical reactions in the autothermal reformer. Simulation results are compared with experimental results for code validation. Operating parameters of the autothermal reformer are inlet temperature, Oxygen to Carbon Ratio(OCR), Steam to Carbon Ratio(SCR), and Gas Hourly Space Veolcity(GHSV). SR reaction rate decreases with low inlet temperature. If OCR is increased, $H_2$ yield is increased but optimal point is suggested. WGS reaction is activated with high SCR. When GHSV is increased, reforming efficiency is increased but pressure drop may decrease the system efficiency.

  • Tropical organic soils having more than 65% of organic matters are named "peat". This soil type is extremely soft, unconsolidated, and possesses low shear strength and stiffness. Different conventional and industrial binders (e.g., lime or Portland cement) are used widely for stabilisation of organic soils. However, due to many factors affecting the behaviour of these soils (e.g., high moisture content, fewer mineral particles, and acidic media), the efficiency of the conventional binders is low and/or cost-intensive. This research investigates the impact of different constituents of cement-sodium silicate grout system on the compressibility behaviour of organic soil, including settlement and void ratio. A microstructure analysis is also carried out on treated organic soil using Scanning Electron Micrographs (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that the settlement and void ratio of treated organic soils decrease gradually with the increase of cement and kaolinite contents, as well as sodium silicate until an optimum value of 2.5% of the wet soil weight. The microstructure analysis also demonstrates that with the increase of cement, kaolinite and sodium silicate, the void ratio and porosity of treated soil particles decrease, leading to an increase in the soil density by the hydration, pozzolanic, and polymerisation processes. This research contributes an extra useful knowledge to the stabilisation of organic soils and upgrading such problematic soils closer to the non-problematic soils for geotechnical applications such as deep mixing.
