  • In the context of additive noise steganography model, we propose a method to detect least significant bit (LSB) matching steganography in grayscale images. Images are decomposed into detail sub-bands with local linear transform (LLT) masks which are sensitive to embedding. Novel normalized characteristic function features weighted by a bank of band-pass filters are extracted from the detail sub-bands. A suboptimal feature set is searched by using a threshold selection algorithm. Extensive experiments are performed on four diverse uncompressed image databases. In comparison with other well-known feature sets, the proposed feature set performs the best under most circumstances.

  • The economic design of specification limits must be determined on an economic basis where we minimize total loss to society, which consists of both the producer and the consumer. Economic specification limits have been developed based on the assumption that the quality characteristic is normally distributed. Unfortunately, the assumption is not to meet some practical cases. In this paper, some non-normal distributions are considered for quality characteristic with geometrical features. An economic model for selecting the optimum specification limits on the basis of minimizing total cost is introduced. A case study is presented to illustrate the application in practice.

  • Autophagy is an important degradative pathway that eliminates misfolded proteins and damaged organelles from cells. Autophagy is crucial for neuronal homeostasis and function. A lack of or deficiency in autophagy leads to the accumulation of protein aggregates, which are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. Compared with non-neuronal cells, neurons exhibit rapid autophagic flux because damaged organelles or protein aggregates cannot be diluted in post-mitotic cells; because of this, these cells exhibit characteristic features of autophagy, such as compartment-specific autophagy, which depends on polarized structures and rapid autophagy flux. In addition, neurons exhibit compartment-specific autophagy, which depends on polarized structures. Neuronal autophagy may have additional physiological roles other than amino acid recycling. In this review, we focus on the characteristics and regulatory factors of neuronal autophagy. We also describe intracellular selective autophagy in neurons and its association with neurodegenerative diseases.

  • Skin cancer, which often occurs as a result of skin exposure to ultraviolet light radiation, usually presents with characteristic abnormal features, such as ulcerative lesions, irregular morphology, bleeding, and excessive growth. Therefore, skin cancer rarely resembles a benign tumor on visual inspection. Nonetheless, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma with nodular or polypoid features can have a similar appearance to that of benign tumors, meaning that they are sometimes misdiagnosed as benign. As benign and malignant tumors have some overlapping features, clinicians sometimes use additional imaging techniques such as ultrasonography to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis because even a malignant tumor that externally resembles a benign tumor generally has internal morphological features characteristic of malignancy, such as invasion and irregular borders. However, these imaging tools also have limitations, and punch or excisional biopsy can be needed if malignancy cannot be completely ruled out. Herein, we report a case of skin malignancy initially misdiagnosed as a benign epidermal cyst based on external visual inspection and ultrasonography.

  • Chordoma is a rare, clinically and morphologically well characterized tumor, which arises from remnants of the notochord, The majority(60%) occurs in the sacrococcygeal region, with 25% in the clival legion, and 15% in the spine. Although most chordomas do not develop metastasis, the long term prognosis is very poor due to local progressive tumor growth and tendency to recur if incompletely excised. The chordoma has characteristic cytologic features which make a preoperative diagnosis possible. We reviewed the cytologic findings of five patients with chordoma(one oropharynx, two clivus, and two sacrum). The patients were three male and two female, aged from 29 to 77 years(mean 60). Of five chordomas, there were local recurrences in two cases and metastasis of lymph node In one case. Four were FNA smears and one was squash smear taken from intraoperative consultation. All five cases show similar cytologic features. The dominating tumor cells were large with round nuclei and pale-stained vacuolated cytoplasm. The small round uniform cells and short spindle-shaped cells were frequently noted. The cells were surrounded by myxoid or mucoid matrix. The chordoma has characteristic cytologic features which make a preoperative diagnosis possible.

  • East Asia experienced extremely cold weather in January 2011, while the previous December and the following February had normal winter temperature. In this study National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data are used to investigate the characteristic features observed in the meteorological fields such as temperature, sea-level pressure, geopotential height, and wind during this winter period. In January the planetary-wave pattern is dominated by stationary-wave form in the mid-to-high latitude region, while transient waves are significant in the previous month. To understand the planetary-wave features quantitatively, harmonic analyses have been done for the 500-hPa geopotential height field. In the climatological-mean geopotential heights the wave numbers 1, 2, and 3 are dominant during the whole winter. In January 2011 the waves of number 1, 2, and 3 are dominant and stationary as in the climatological-mean field. In December 2010 and February 2011, however, the waves of number 4, 5, and 6 play a major role and show a transient pattern. In addition to the distinctive features in each month the planetary-wave patterns dependent on the latitude are also discussed.

  • This paper presents a real- time detection of on-road succeeding vehicles based on low level edge features and a boosted cascade of Haar-like features. At first, the candidate vehicle location in an image is found by low level horizontal edge and symmetry characteristic of vehicle. Then a boosted cascade of the Haar-like features is applied to the initial hypothesized vehicle location to extract the refined vehicle location. The initial hypothesis generation using simple edge features speeds up the whole detection process and the application of a trained cascade on the hypothesized location increases the accuracy of the detection process. Experimental results on real world road scenario with processing speed of up to 27 frames per second for $720{\times}480$ pixel images are presented.

  • Compared with other features of the image, color features are less sensitive to noise and background complication. Besides, this adding to object segmentation has more accuracy of image retrieval. This paper presents object segmentation and HAQ(Histogram Analysis and Quantization) algorithm approach to extract features(the object information and the characteristic colors) of an image. The empirical results shows that this method presents exactly spatial and color information of an image as image retrieval's feature.

  • This paper presents a axial flux permanent magnet synchronous generator(AFPMSG), which is suitable for both vertical-axis and horizontal-axis wind turbine generation system. The design and construction features of the AFPMSG are reviewed. The characteristic analysis is performed such as cogging torque and e.m.f waveform, with the aid of a 3D finite element method. The experimental results confirm the characteristic analysis developed.
