From Opposition to Cooperation: Semantic Change of with

  • A historical investigation reveals that English preposition with underwent a change from OPPOSITION to ASSOCIATION and further to ACCOMPANIMENT, where the first stage shows peculiarity in that the two concepts involved comprise an unusual set to form an extensional chain. Intrigued by this oddity, this paper aims to investigate the semantic structure of English preposition with from a grammaticalization perspective. We review mechanisms and models of semantic change and evaluate their adequacy with the semantic structure and change shown by with. Drawing upon the observed fact that with underwent the apparent antonymic semantic change, it is argued that such semantic change mechanisms as metaphor, metonymy, subjectification, and generalization have difficulties explaining the change, and that only the Frame-of-Focus Variation can effectively account for this peculiar change type. In terms of semantic change models, we argue that the Bleaching Model cannot effectively provide an explanation; that the Loss and Gain Model has problems in explaining the motivation of change directions; that the Metonymic-Metaphoric Model cannot be assessed at the current level of investigation; and that the Overlap Model and the Prototype Extension Model excellently account for the macro-level changes.

  • 본 연구는 전통의 규범적 의미에 대한 재해석과 범주화의 탐구를 목적으로 한다. 행위의 규정 근거로서 전통은 규범적 의미를 지니며, 도덕의 중요한 원천이다. 통시적 맥락에서 볼 때, 생태문화적 관점에서 고찰할 때, 전통적 가치는 그 연원이 있고, 시대적 사회적 변화에 따른 변용과 왜곡의 모습을 지니기도 한다. 전통적 가치가 민주시민으로서 미래 사회를 대비하는 데 기여하기 위해서는 재해석과 범주화가 필요하다. 미래 한국사회의 변화 전망 속에 유효한 전통의 규범적 의미는 그 연원으로부터 재해석을 통해 도출될 수 있다. 본고의 논의 순서는 다음과 같다. 먼저 생태문화적 관점에서 전통적 가치의 동적인 변화상을 살펴보고, 한국사회에서 전통적 가치에 대한 사회적 인식을 바탕으로 대표적인 전통적 가치인 충효의 현대적 재해석의 가능성을 탐색하고자 한다. 끝으로 서구적 가치와 한국의 전통적 가치를 포괄하는 한국적 가치의 맥락 속에서 전통적 가치의 범주화와 그 함의를 밝히고자 한다.

패션 일러스트레이션에 표현된 스테레오타입 여성성 (Stereotype Femininity Expressed in Fashion Illustration)

  • This study analyzes the stereotyped femininity with a focus on body codes, which has been continuously expressed in fashion illustrations from the late $19^{th}$ century to the year 2010, and examines the changes in its meaning. Stereotyped femininity was reorganized by the changes in female sex role effected by social changes, as well as by the body discourse and feminism in the late $20^{th}$ century, These socio-cultural backgrounds led to the change in the meaning of stereotyped women expressed in fashion illustrations. The stereotyped women in fashion illustrations are characterized by gender-oriented body, and the typical image of women was reproduced with the marks of poses and looks that feature passiveness and subordination. Then, the gender-oriented body since 1990's shifted to active meaning that positively revealed sexual desire. The space positioned by women is also the symbol of gender. In line with changes over time, the backgrounds in fashion illustrations have changed from private space such as home and nature to public space such as city, which reflects diversification and expansion of space for women. This study has identified the changes in meaning, based on the analysis of the characteristics of stereotyped women expressed in fashion illustrations. Above all, women who were objectified as a subject by dominant discourse have established the concept of active body as an entity. In addition, the symbol of typical femininity is "slim" and "beauty", which reflects the change from the emphasis on childbirth-related femininity to self-control and conquer. On the other hand, the typical features expressed through body have reproduced dichotomous structure, but the emergence of body and background deviated from gender has reorganized the symbolic order of gender.

노인의 성생활 경험에 대한 서술적 연구 (A study on sexual experiences and behaviors of aged in community)

  • This study aimed at comprehending the meaning of sexual life for aged people, their strength of sexual desire and causes of change in their sexual life. It was another purpose to understand the extent of aged people's acknowledging the necessity of sexual consultation. This study adopted descriptive method using open-ended questionaires. The data for study was collected from 26 people over 65 years who reside in communities. It was gathered from April to June of 1998 through interview. The interviewee includes 16 males, 9 females and their average age was 73.3. 19 people among them have spouses. The conclusion of this study can be summarized as follows. 1) Attitude to sexual life: The meaning of sexual life for aged people is categorized as 'sense of duty', 'feeling of intimacy', 'basic desire', 'decrease of meaning' and 'meaningless'. 2) Sexual desire: Sexual desire of aged people is categorized as 'extinction', 'decrease', 'continuation' and 'restraint'. Restraint of sexual desire is due to social convention or the difficulty in fulfilling desire. 3) Causes of troubles in sexual life Causes which lead to troubles in sexual life of aged people can be categorized as 'physical', 'psychological' and 'social'. 'Physical' elements include 'incompetence of erection', 'decrease in duration of erection', 'increase in time needed to re-erection', 'declining of physical strength', 'decrease in vagina secretion' and 'worsening of health'. Among 'psychological' elements 'decrease of self-confidence', 'diminished concern of female aged people' are. 'Social elements' are 'absence of sexual parter', 'circumstances of living' and 'recognition of neighbor'. 4) Response to change of sexual life The reaction of aged people to change of sexual activities is classified as 'positive' and 'negative'. 5) Attitude to the consultation of sexual life of aged people The attitude to the consultation of sexual life in old age is classified as 'negative', 'doubtful' and 'positive'. This study explored the meaning which aged people in community attach to sexual life, the extent of their sexual desire, the causes of troubles in their sexual life, their emotional response to changes in sexual life, their recognition of necessity in sexual consultation. Considering the frequency of the statement, most of aged people who were interviewed thought much of sexual life and put emphasis on it. Those who said that sexual life has decreased meaning or is not important to them are few, Though aged people still maintain sexual desire, most of them have some trouble in sexual life. These trouble changes the sexual life, and results in negative feeling such as depression, renunciation and difficulty in relations. So they acknowledged that sexual consultation is necessary to them.

  • 한국전쟁 이후에 발생했던 수많은 사건들 가운데 '$5{\cdot}18$' 만큼 사회적 기억의 편차가 컸던 경우는 드물 것이다. $5{\cdot}18$은 다른 민주화운동 관련 사건들에 비해 의미의 변용이 다양하게 이루어졌다는 점에서도 특별하다. 그래서 이 글은 먼저 기념사업을 중심으로 $5{\cdot}18$의 의미가 변용되었던 배경과 논리를 파악하고, 이것이 $5{\cdot}18$기념사업의 관점과 형태에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가를 고찰한다. $5{\cdot}18$기념사업에 관한 인식과 형태는 2000년을 전후하여 크게 달라졌다. 이전 시기의 기념사업은 사회 운동 논리가 제도화의 논리로 일정하게 수렴되는 양상을 보였다. 이 시기에는 민주성지와 성역화의 담론이 중심을 이루었고, 기억투쟁의 성격을 띠었다. 반면 이후의 시기에는 $5{\cdot}18$의 의미가 문화도시와 인권도시를 조성하는 역사적 자원으로 해석되었다. 이러한 변화 과정에서 $5{\cdot}18$의 의미는 때로는 지역 발전 담론으로 전유되었고, 때로는 도시차별화 전략의 소재로 채택되었다. 이에 맞추어 기념사업이 추진되었던 형태도 기억투쟁형에서 유산산업형으로 달라졌다.

  • Periodontitis is the major concern of oral disease to human, and begins in the interdental area. The aim of this study is to discuss the clinical application method and the meaning of interdental brush. It is very difficult to change oral health behaviors, because patients believe that it is enough that the reason of tooth brushing is to remove food debris, not dental biofilm. Moreover, there are several barriers for using interdental brush. For the better oral health and maintenance of dental prosthesis, it is very important to motivate the use of the interdental brush well, and teach the desirable design of the interdental brush and the clinical meaning to patients.

  • Objectives : I would find out the exact interpretation and meaning of 'Yin sheng ze Yang bing Yang sheng ze Yin bing' in "Su Wen(素問) Yin Yang Yin Xiang Da Lun(陰陽應象大論)". Methods : I had searched the opinions of annotators about this paragraph and compared treatment principles that clinicians, such as Son Samak(孫思邈), Lee Cheon developed. Results : This paragraph is related to theory of the paragraph 'chong han ze re(重寒則熱), chong re ze han(重熱則寒)'. Yin and Yang in Yin sheng and Yang sheng mean the chill and heat of herb, food or symptoms, Yin and Yang in Yang bing and Yin bing mean outer and inner portion in body. Conclusions : The meaning of this paragraph moved from the aspect of recuperation to the aspect of disease-related change.

지역기반 환경체험학습의 효과에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effects of Experiential Learning for Environment Based on Living Area)

  • This study was intended to answer the question, 'What kinds of effects will be aroused by experiential learning for environment based on living area?'. Experiential learning for environment was operated to 17 elementary school students in 4th grade in Kyeong-san city. The results were drawn analyzing the mind map for the changes of environmental consciousness before and after learning, and they are as below. First, it had an effect to change the meaning association of the relationship between 'river and me'. Meaning association was 'river-a thing' before experiential learning, but it was developed as 'river-a thing-me' after learning. This means that students expanded understanding of the world that they were belonging and self-spatialization was promoted. The expansion of meaning association would be a start point and a method to promote their segmentation for each student. Second, students could self-directly modify misconception and preconception after experiential learning. It showed that students could find meanings in the world that they were belonging by experiential learning for environment, and misconception obtained by concept learning without actual situation could be revised through the truth recognition in meanings, and student could see what things displayed. Therefore preconception would be corrected. Of course, everything would not be completed by just one time of experiential learning, and consistent experience learning should be operated. Third, experiential learning promoted the change of sensitivity. Students had shallow sensitivity, which appeared in the relation with things, since having learned only inside of class without a direct observation. However their sensitivity could be increased by experiencing specific things. Fourth, there was the change of classification recognition. Students found properties of things with a direct observation. It raised their ability to classify things, and to understand an individual thing in 'a class'.

  • Nowadays a movement of public health awareness has just begun through the recent health promotion law in Korea. Implementation of the health promotion requires a pluralistic process involving public and private participants from many sectors and backgrounds. The most important thing in promoting health is the appropriate role of government in fostering personal behavior change. ‘Health promotion’ has been a highly fashionable term; however it has been used in many different ways unfortunately, often without any clarification of meaning. It is because the meaning of health promotion is diverse and broad. Therefore this article focuses on the categorization of the diverse meaning of health promotion. Additionally. it puts stress on the flexibility of health promotion.

Pre-service Teachers' Internalized Meanings of Educational Constructivism

  • Constructivism is defined in a variety of ways (e.g., constructivist research paradigm, sociological constructivism, and philosophical constructivism) and applied in vastly different contexts. Among the various usages and interpretations of constructivism, one is educational constructivism that embodies an epistemological view of knowledge and learning that is an alternative to naive empiricism or classical behaviorism. To represent the full range of stances taken by educational constructivists, three versions of educational constructivism were considered in this study: individual constructivism originating in the work of Piaget, the radical version of constructivism associated with von Glasersfeld, and the social constructivism of Vygotsky. I investigated preservice teachers' meaning construction about constructivist epistemology as they went through their preservice teacher education program using in-depth interviews. This preservice teacher education program employs constructivist aspects of teacher education and generates applications of constructivism to the practice of teaching. Features of preservice teachers' internalized meanings of educational constructivism include: (1)traditional pedagogy as the default, (2) Literal interpretation of constructivism, (3) Individual constructivism as conceptual change learning, (4) Radical constructivism as a strong individualistic philosophy, (5) Social constructivism as being too ideal to be practical. A compilation of the teachers' own statements about how to implement conceptual change learning and their projected role as constructivist teacher is also provided.
