  • Solid oxide fuel cells have a limitation in their low-temperature application due to the low ionic conductivity of electrolyte materials and difficulties in thin film formation on porous gas diffusion layer. These problems can be solved by improvement of ionic conductivity through controlled nanostructure of electrolyte and adopting nanoporous electrodes as substrates which have homogeneous submicron pore size and highly flattened surface. In this study, ultra-thin oxide films having submicron thickness without gas leakage are deposited on nanoporous substrates. By oxidation of metal thin films deposited onto nanoporous anodic alumina substrates with pore size of $20nm{\sim}200nm$ using dc-magnetron sputtering at room temperature, ultra-thin and dense ionic conducting oxide films with submicron thickness are realized. The specific material properties of the thin films including gas permeation, grain/gran boundaries formation, change of crystalline structure/microstructure by phase transition are investigated for optimization of ultra thin film deposition process.

  • Decalcomania is a new method for SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) unit cell fabrication. A tight and dense $5{\mu}m$ Yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) electrolyte layer on anode substrate was fabricated by the decalcomania method. After 8YSZ as the electrolyte starting material was calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$, the particle size was controlled by the attrition mill. The median particle size (D50) of each 8YSZ was $39.6{\mu}m$, $9.30{\mu}m$, $6.35{\mu}m$, and $3.16{\mu}m$, respectively. The anode substrate was coated with decalcomania papers which were made by using 8YSZ with different median particle sizes. In order to investigate the effect of median particle sizes and sintering conditions on the electrolyte density, each sample was sintered for 2, 5 and 10 h, respectively. 8YSZ with a median particle size of $3.16{\mu}m$ which was sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 10 had the highest density. With this 8YSZ, a SOFCs unit cell was manufactured with a $5{\mu}m$ layer by the decalcomania method. Then the unit cell was run at $800^{\circ}C$. The Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) and Maximum power density (MPD) was 1.12 V and $650mW/cm^2$, respectively.

  • This paper reports the microstructure of hot-pressed $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics with added $B_4C$ as characterized by transmission electron microscopy. $ZrB_2$ has a melting point of $3245^{\circ}C$, a relatively low density of $6.1g/cm^3$, and specific mechanical properties at an elevated temperature, making it a candidate for application to environments with ultra-high temperatures which exceed $2000^{\circ}C$. Due to the non-sinterability of $ZrB_2$-based ceramics, research on sintering aids such as $B_4C$ or $MoSi_2$ has become prominent recently. From TEM investigations, an amorphous layer with contaminant oxide is observed in the vicinity of $B_4C$ grains remaining in hot-pressed $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics with $B_4C$ as an additive. The effect of a $B_4C$ addition on the microstructure of this system is also discussed.

  • Hot-pressure sintered laminar composites with alumina/zirconia or mullite/zirconia as an outer layer and alumina/zircon (resulting in reaction-bonded mullite/zirconia during sintering) as an inner layer were fabricated by tape casting and lamination. Various forms of crack were observed in sintered laminar composites, these cracks included channel cracks in the outer layer, transverse cracks in the inner layer and interface cracks debonding interlayer. Based on detailed microscopic observations, the cracks were attributed to thermal expansion mismatch between the oxides consisting of the each layer. In particular, the interlayer and transverse cracks were confirmed in the laminates consisted of the mullite/zirconia system as the outer layers, however, those cracks were not observed in the alumina/zirconia system used. In addition, the crack propagation did not exhibit same behavior in the two kinds of outer layer when the indentation load was applied.

  • In this study, we fabricate and investigate low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells with a ceramic substrate/porous metal/ceramic/porous metal structure. To realize low-temperature operation in solid oxide fuel cells, the membrane should be fabricated to have a thickness of the order of a few hundreds nanometers to minimize IR loss. Yttrium-doped barium zirconate (BYZ), a proton conductor, was used as the electrolyte. We deposited a 350-nm-thick Pt (anode) layer on a porous substrate by sputter deposition. We also deposited a 1-${\mu}m$-thick BYZ layer on the Pt anode using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Finally, we deposited a 200-nm-thick Pt (cathode) layer on the BYZ electrolyte by sputter deposition. The open circuit voltage (OCV) is 0.806 V, and the maximum power density is 11.9 mW/$cm^2$ at $350^{\circ}C$. Even though a fully dense electrolyte is deposited via PLD, a cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image reveals many voids and defects.

  • $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ as air electrode for soild oxide fuel cell was synthesized by a citrate process and its cathodic polarization was determinated by the current interruption method on the Gd-doped ceria as electrolyte. The addition of citric acid increased the exothermic heat for the formation of $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ perovskite oxide. The degree of the initial particle agglomeration was affected by the exothermic heat. Also the increase of cal-cination temperature enlarged the particle size and the higher sintering temperature accelerated the den-sification of $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ layer after its being painted on $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ electrolyte. In this study $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ synthesized by citrate process of which the molar ratio of citric acid to metal nitrate was 2 calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ for 2hr and sintered at 1100 at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs after slurry coating on Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 electrlyte showed the lowest cathodic polarization.

  • (100) Si and 4$^{\circ}$off (100) Si were oxidized in dry oxygen, and the differences in thermal oxidation behavior and electrical characteristics between two specimens were investigated. Ellipsometer measurements of the oxide thickness produced by oxidation in dry oxygen from 1000 to 120$0^{\circ}C$ showed that the oxidation rates of the 5$^{\circ}$ off (100) Si were more rapid than those of the (100) Si and the differences between them decreased as the oxidation temperature increased. The activation energies based on the parabolic rate constant, B for (100) and 4$^{\circ}$off (100) Si were 25.8, 28.6 kcal/mol and those on the linear rate constant, B/A were 56.8, 54.9 kcal/mol, respectively. Variation of C-V characteristics with the oxidation temperature showed that the flat band voltages were shifted positively and surface state charge densities decreased as the oxidation temperature increased, and the surface state charge density of the 4$^{\circ}$off (100) Si was lower than that of the (100) Si. Also considerable decrease in the density of oxidation induced stacking faults (OSF) for the 4$^{\circ}$off (100) Si was observed through optical microscopy after preferentially etching off the oxide layer.

  • Thermal properties of a SiO2-B2O3-BaO ternary glass system depending on compositional change of BaO have been examined to find a proper sealing material for reversible oxide cells. Glass transition temperature and thermal expansion coefficients increased simultaneously up to 55 mol% of BaO content. The structural role of BaO with regard to the thermal properties has been discussed on the basis of Raman spectroscopy results. Flowability of the glass at sealing temperature has been examined with packed glass powders of 12 mm diameter along with a high temperature optical microscope. The practical sealing property of the glass was also examined with YSZ coated with NiO-yittria stabilized zirconia (NiO-YSZ) and it showed good adhesion without noticeable reaction with NiO-YSZ layer.

  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of ceramic fused to Ni-Cr alloy(Alophaloy) by heat treatment. Methods: The specimens were divided into 5 groups according to heat treatment conditions prior to porcelain application. Eighteen specimens from each group were subjected to the shear load a universal testing machine using a 0.1mm/min cross-head speed and two specimens from each group were observed with SEM and EDX line profile. Results: The observation of the oxide film on the metal surface by SEM photograph showed a coarsening with an increasing degassing hold time. The diffusion of metal oxide was observed farther from the opaque layer in the heat treated specimen than no heat treated specimen. The shear bond strength measured highest to A5(55.23MPa) in the 10min holding group and measured lowest from A1(24.38MPa) in the no heat treated group, and there was a significant difference(p<0.05). Conclusion: The shear bond strength of Ni-Cr alloy improved in the heat treatment compared to the no heat treatment specimen.
