  • Separation with synthetic membrane have become increasingly important processes in many fields. In the most application of membrane process, polymer membrane is used. the main advantage of polymers as a material for membrane preparation is the relative simplicity of this film formation which enables one to obtain rather high permeability rates. However, polymeric membranes have several limitations, such as high temperature instability, swelling and decomposition in organic solvent, et. al.. These limitations can be overcome by inorganic membrane. At the present time, commercially available inorganic membranes have pore diameters ranging 5nm to 50mm, and the predominant flow regime in such membrane is Knudsen diffusion. Since the Knudsen permeability is directly proportional to the molecular velocity, gases can be separated due to their molecular masses. However, this separation mechanism is only of important for light gases such as H2 and He. Other separation mechanisms like surface diffusion, active diffusion can play an important role only with very small pore diameters(2nm) and give rise to large permselectivities. Therefore, preparation of inorganic membrane with nano-sized pore have been attracting more and more attention.

  • Perovskite type ceramic membranes which exhibit dual ion conduction (proton and oxygen ion conduction) can permeate water and can aid solving operational problems such as temperature gradient and carbon deposition associated with a working solid oxide fuel cell. From this point of view, it is crucial to reveal water transport mechanism and especially the nature of the surface sites that is necessary for water incorporation and evolution. $BaCe_{0.8}Y_{0.2}O_{3-{\alpha}}$ (BCY20) was used as a model proton and oxygen ion conducting membrane in this work. Four different catalytically modified membrane configurations were used for the investigations and water flux was measured as a function of temperature. In addition, CO was introduced to the permeate side in order to test the stability of membrane against water and $CO/CO_2$ and post operation analysis of used membranes were carried out. The results revealed that water incorporation occurs on any exposed electrolyte surface. However, the magnitude of water permeation changes depending on which membrane surface is catalytically modified. The platinum increases the water flux on the feed side whilst it decreases the flux on the permeate side. Water flux measurements suggest that platinum can block water permeation on the permeate side by reducing the access to the lattice oxygen in the surface layer.

  • Ceramic membrane consisting of an ${\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3}$ support and Fe doped $TiO_{2}$ top layer was prepared by the sol-gel method. The supported Fe doped $TiO_{2}$ top layer was made by dip coating the support in a mixed sol. The microstructure of the composite membranes was studied by SEM after calcination at $550~850^{\circ}C$. After sintering at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr., the average particle diameter of the Fe doped $TiO_{2}$ top layer was ~40 nm. The supported Fe doped $TiO_{2}$ composite membranes exhibited much higher heat resistance than the $TiO_{2}$ membrane. The Fe doped $TiO_{2}$ composite membrane retained a crack-free microstructure and narrow particle size distribution even after calcination up to $650^{\circ}C$.

  • There are several different methods to characterize membrane pore size distribution, however, it is yet difficult to accurately measure pore size range of 10-50 nm. In this work, we employed gas-liquid displacement porometer (GLDP) and liquid-liquid displacement porometer (LLDP) to characterize in-house alumina hollow fiber membrane (K-100) and commercial membranes (A-100, A-20) that exhibit pore sizes between 10-100 nm. GLDP method was more suitable for measuring the maximum pore size, and the measured mean pore size of the membranes by LLDP were better correlated with water permeability and solute rejection. It was determined that LLDP is effective for measuring pore sizes between 10-50 nm; however, the method holds intrinsic disadvantages such as low precision and high sensitivity compared to that of GLDP. Nevertheless, it is expected that the recently commercialized LLDP technique can provide useful data that other methods cannot.

  • Effect of water back-flushing period (FT) was investigated in hybrid water treatment process of carbon ultrafiltration and polypropylene (PP) beads coated with photocatalyst, and membrane effect was studied by comparing the previous studies with carbon microfiltration or alumina ultrafiltration, microfiltration membranes. FT 6 min was the most effective to control initial membrane fouling and optimal condition because the membrane fouling resistance was low until initial 60 min and the maximum total permeate volume was acquired at this FT. The turbidity treatment efficiency was high beyond 98.6%, and did not depend on FT, which was same with the previous result of carbon or alumina microfiltration. The organic matters treatment efficiency was the highest value of 98.2% at FT 6 min, which was almost same trend with the previous result of alumina microfiltration. Then the organic matters treatment efficiency of carbon microfiltration was the minimum at no back-flushing (NBF) and increased as decreasing FT, but that of alumina ultrafiltration was the maximum at NBF and also increased as decreasing FT. Therefore it means that water back-flushing effect on the organic matters treatment efficiency had a different mechanism depending on pore size in spite of the same material membranes.

  • In this study the discharged wastewater from paper manufacturing plant was filtrated by 4 kinds of tubular ceramic microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes (carbon material) with periodic water-back-flushing, and we tried to find the optimum back-flushing time (BT). As results of water-BT effect for each ceramic membrane, the longer BT was more effective for a membrane having the larger pore size. And we could acquire the most volume of total permeate and the highest recovery efficiency of purified water, Then, the results of permeate flux vs. initial permeate flux during 180 min's operation showed that the longer BT was more effective for longer filtration time (FT) to obtain the higher permeate flux because membrane fouling proceeded deeply at long FT condition. And the optimum BT that founded from the trends of membrane fouling resistances almost accorded with the optimum BT from the trends of permeate flux, too.

  • Hybridization of dense ceramic membranes for hydrogen separation with an electronically conductive metallic phase is normally utilized to enhance the hydrogen permeation flux and thereby to increase the production efficiency of hydrogen. In this study, we developed a nickel and proton conducting oxide ($BaCe_{0.9}Y_{0.1}O_{3-{\delta}}$: BCY) based cermet (ceramic-metal composites) membrane. Focused on the general criteria in that the hydrogen permeation properties of a cermet membrane depend on its microstructural features, such as the grain size and the homogeneity of the mix, we tried to optimize the microstructure of Ni-BCY cermets by controlling the fabrication condition. The Ni-BCY composite powder was synthesized via a solid-state reaction using $2NiCO_3{\cdot}3Ni(OH)_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, $BaCeO_3$, $CeO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ as a starting material. To optimize the mixing scale and homogeneity of the composite powder, we employed a high-energy milling process. With this high-energy milled composite powder, we could fabricate a fine-grained dense membrane with an excellent level of mixing homogeneity. This controlled Ni-BCY cermet membrane showed higher hydrogen permeability compared to uncontrolled Ni-BCY cermets created with a conventionally ball-milled composite powder.

  • This study attempts to verify the applicability of ceramic membrane as a separator by comparing the power generation characteristics in single-chamber MFCs using ceramic membranes to those in the MFCs using nafion membrane. The generated power in MFCs by using acetate as a substrate was more stable than that by using formate, propionate and butyrate, respectively. It was shown that the generated power by using formate substrate in MFCs was unstable and a little higher than that by using acetate, and the power generated by using propionate and butyrate were lower than that by using acetate. In order to find out the Pt catalyst effect, it was compared the power generated in MFCs using Pt-coated carbon cloth as electrode to that power using normal carbon cloth. The power generated in MFCs using Pt-coated carbon cloth as electrode was 1.2 times higher than that using normal carbon cloth. The Pt-coated carbon cloth was about 5 times more expensive than normal carbon cloth. It is suggested that both power generation efficiency and cost together should be considered in selecting electrodes of MFCs. It was found that the ceramic membrane was superior to nafion membrane by comparing to the power generation characteristics obtained. It was shown that average voltage values were $523.67mV{\pm}49.41mV$ by using synthetic wastewater, in MFCs of ceramic membrane as a separator. While average voltage values were $424.09mV{\pm}79.95mV$ by using synthetic wastewater, in MFCs of nafion membrane as a separator. The organic removal efficiency, 41.7% by using ceramic membrane was a little bit higher than 40.8% by using nafion membrane. This research implies ceramic membrane can be a valid alternative to nafion membrane as a separator when considering the power generation and the efficiency of organics removal.

  • In this study, we treated lake water by 2 kinds of multichannel ceramic micro filtration membranes. We could investigate effects of $N_2-back-flushing$ time (BT) and transmembrane pressure (TMP), and find optimal operating conditions. The BT were changed in $10{\sim}60$ sec, TMP in $0.6{\sim}2.0$ bar at fixed filtration time (FT) 8 min, flow rate 2.0 L/min and back-flushing pressure 2.0 bar. Also, the optimal conditions were discussed in the viewpoints of resistance of membrane fouling $(R_f)$, dimensionless permeate flux $(J/J_o)$, permeate flux (J) and total permeate volume $(V_T)$. As result, optimal back-flushing conditions for HC04 ($0.4{\mu}m$ pore size) and HC10 membrane $(1.0{\mu}m)$ were BT=10 sec and BT=20 sec, respectively. Then, higher TMP should increase the driving force, and could produce more VT. Average rejection rates of pollutants were higher than 95.4% for turbidity, $12.7{\sim}20.1%\;for\;COD_{Mn},\;0.0{\sim}6.4%\;for\;NH_3-N,\;1.9{\sim}4.6%$ for T-N and $34.9{\sim}88.4%$ for T-P.

  • Barium zirconate exhibits good thermo-chemical stability and proton conduction at high temperatures, but shows poor electron conductivity. Therefore, for high efficiency of hydrogen separation, a very thin and dense Pd-Barium zirconate membrane has to be coated on a porous substrate. A thin and dense Pd-Barium zirconate membrane was successfully synthesized on a porous substrate by means of dual sputtering method. The structural and chemical features of the $BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_{3-{\delta}}$ membranes sputtered at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ were investigated by X-ray diffractometry, and it was found that a well-crystallized membrane, Pm-3m space group of $BaZrO_3$, was synthesized. The surface and cross-sectional morphologies of membrane were assessed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and TEM(transmission electron microscopy) of the surface and of cross sections. The cross sectional observation of Pd-$BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_{3-{\delta}}$ membrane by dual sputtering shows that the coating is quite dense with columnar structure.
