Copper ion induced photoluminescence (PL) quenching dynamics and recovery of the PL by zinc ions were investigated for CdSe based nanocrystals. When copper ions were added, CdSe quantum dots showed fast and dramatically PL quenching whereas PL of CdSe nanorod gradually decreased. In the presence of zinc ions, the PL of CdSe/CdS (core/shell) nanocrystals that have quenched by copper ions was efficiently recovered. It showed that the PL intensity of nanocrystals increased by 50% in a solution containing 1 μM zinc ions. The PL intensity was increasing with increasing zinc ions, and could be described by Langmuir binding isotherm model. We showcase that the CdSe based nanocrystals can be used as fluorescence turn-on sensor.
More than two decades of world-wide research efforts have resulted in several classes of potentially important materials. Among them are incipient piezoelectrics, which are especially useful for actuator applications. However, relatively large electric fields are required for activating the large incipient electromechanical strains. So far, many attempts have been made to reduce the required electric field by intentionally inhomogenizing the electric field distribution in the microstructure through core-shell and composite approaches. Here, we show that electric field concentration can be realized simply by adjusting electrode patterns. We have investigated the effect of electrode patterning on the incipient electromechanical strain properties of an exemplarily chosen lead-free relaxor system, revealing that electrode patterning does have a significant role on the strain properties of the given lead-free relaxor system. We believe that this approach would make a new strategy for ones to consider bringing the functional properties of electroceramics beyond their conventional limit.
Bond strength of $SrZrO_3$ resistive oxide barrier on Ag sheathed Bi(2223) tapes prepared by the sol-gel and dip-coating method was evaluated with an aid of Taguchi method and $L_18(2^1{\times}3^7)$ orthogonal arrays to determine the optimal process combination of levels of factors that best satisfy the bigger is better quality characteristic. The observed optimal condition is as follows: Sr/Zr mol ratio(0.3/0.7), amount of organic vehicle(5 wt%), drying temperature and time(160${\circ}C$, 10 min), heat treatment temperature and time(500${\circ}C$, 20 min), respectively. ANOVA analysis suggested that the influence of the factors within ${\alpha}$=0.1 was significant with a 90% confidence level.
The effects of $Dy_2O_3$ and $Er_2O_3$ co-doping on electrical properties and temperature stability of barium titanate ($BaTiO_3$) ceramics were investigated in terms of microstructure and structural analysis. The dielectric constant and the insulation resistance (IR) of 0.7 mol% $Dy_2O_3$ and 0.3 mol% $Er_2O_3$ co-doped dielectrics had about 60% and 20% higher than the values of undoped one, respectively, and the temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC) met the X7R specification. The addition of $Dy_2O_3$ contributed to electrical properties caused by increase of tetragonality; however, preferential diffusion of $Dy^{3+}$ ions toward A site in $BaTiO_3$ grain exhibited an adverse effect on temperature stability by grain growth. On the other hand, The $Er_2O_3$ addition in $BaTiO_3$ could affect the TCC behavior and the IR with suppression of grain growth caused by reinforcement of grain boundary and electrical compensation. Therefore, the enhanced electrical properties and temperature stability through the co-doping could be deduced from the increase of tetragonality and the suppression of grain growth.

A new refined hyperbolic shear deformation theory (RHSDT), which involves only four unknown functions as against five in case of other shear deformation theories, is presented for the thermoelastic bending analysis of functionally graded sandwich plates. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. The sandwich plate faces are assumed to have isotropic, two-constituent material distribution through the thickness, and the modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio of the faces, and thermal expansion coefficients are assumed to vary according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic ceramic material. Several kinds of sandwich plates are used taking into account the symmetry of the plate and the thickness of each layer. The influences played by the transverse shear deformation, thermal load, plate aspect ratio and volume fraction distribution are studied. Numerical results for deflections and stresses of functionally graded metal-ceramic plates are investigated. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the thermoelastic bending behavior of functionally graded plates.
PURPOSE. This study evaluated marginal fit of glass infiltrated alumina cores fabricated using two techniques and their marginal stability after firing cycles of veneering porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifteen standardized all-ceramic crowns were fabricated on a metal die using each technique: slip cast technique of VITA In-Ceram sprint Alumina (Group A as control) and plastic foil matrix technique of Turkom-Cera fused alumina core system (Group B). Copings were compared between groups and within groups at coping stage and after firing each layer of veneering porcelain. A device was used to standardize seating of copings on the metal die and positioning of the specimens under the microscope after each stage of fabrication. The specimens were not cemented and marginal gap was measured using an image analyzing software (Imagepro Express) on the photographs captured under an optical microscope. Two tailed unpaired 't test' was used to compare marginal gaps in two groups and one way ANOVA was used to analyze marginal distortion within each group at 95% confidence interval. RESULTS. The marginal gap was smaller at the coping stage in group B ($60+30{\mu}M$) than group A ($81+21{\mu}M$) with statistical significance. After firing of veneering porcelain the difference was insignificant. At the final stage, both groups exhibited lower mean marginal gaps than at the initial coping stage with the difference of $11.75{\mu}M$ for group A and $11.94{\mu}M$ for group B, but it was statistically insignificant due to high value of standard deviation. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that both techniques produced copings with comparable and acceptable marginal fit and marginal stability on firing veneering porcelain.
Silicon oxynitride (SiON) layers deposited upon a $SiO_2/Si$ buffer layer placed upon silicon wafers have been obtained by using PECVD from $SiH_4,\;N_2O$, and $N_2$. It can be seen that the refractive index, measured by using a prism coupler, for the SiON films can be varied between 1.4480 and 1.4958 at a wavelength of 1552 nm by changing the process parameters. Optical planar waveguides with a thickness of $6{\mu}m$ and a refractive index contrast ($\Delta$n) of $0.36\% have been deposited. Also, etching experiments were performed using ICP dry etching equipment on thick SiON films grown onto Si substrates covered by a thick $SiO_2$ buffer layer. A polarization maintaining single-mode fiber was used for the input and a microscope objective for the output at $1.55{\mu}m$. As a result, a low index contrast SiON based waveguide is fabricated with easily adjustable refractive index of core layer. It illustrates that the output intensity mode is a waveguiding single-mode.
Silica based Planar Lightwave Circuits (PLC) have been applied to various kinds of wave-guided optical passive devices. SiO$_2$ (buffer) and GeO$_2$-SiO$_2$ (core) thick films have been deposited by Flame Hydrolysis Deposition (FHD). The SiO$_2$ films were produced by the flame hydrolysis reaction of halide materials such as SiCl$_4$, POCl$_3$ and BCl$_3$ into an oxy-hydrogen torch. The P concentration increased from 2.0 to 2.8 at% on increasing the POCl$_3$/BCl$_3$ flow ratio. The refractive index increased from 1.4584 to 1.4605 on increasing the POC1$_3$/BC1$_3$ flow ratio from 0.6 to 2.6. The refractive index of GeO$_2$-SiO$_2$ films was controlled by the GeCl$_4$ flow rate. The refractive index increased from 1.4615 to 1.4809 on increasing the GeCl$_4$ flow rate from 30 to 120 sccm.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of one zirconia-based ceramic used with various veneering ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia core material (Katana) and five veneering ceramics (Cerabien ZR; CZR, Lava Ceram; LV, Cercon Ceram Kiss; CC, IPS e.max Ceram; EM and VITA VM9; VT) were selected. Using the powder/liquid layering technique, bilayered disk specimens (diameter: 12.50 mm, thickness: 1.50 mm) were prepared to follow ISO standard 6872:2008 into five groups according to veneering ceramics as follows; Katana zirconia veneering with CZR (K/CZR), Katana zirconia veneering with LV (K/LV), Katana zirconia veneering with CC (K/CC), Katana zirconia veneering with EM (K/EM) and Katana zirconia veneering with VT (K/VT). After 20,000 thermocycling, load tests were conducted using a universal testing machine (Instron). The BFS were calculated and analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (${\alpha}$=0.05). The Weibull analysis was performed for reliability of strength. The mode of fracture and fractured surface were observed by SEM. RESULTS. It showed that K/CC had significantly the highest BFS, followed by K/LV. BFS of K/CZR, K/EM and K/VT were not significantly different from each other, but were significantly lower than the other two groups. Weibull distribution reported the same trend of reliability as the BFS results. CONCLUSION. From the result of this study, the BFS of the bilayered zirconia/veneer composite did not only depend on the Young's modulus value of the materials. Further studies regarding interfacial strength and sintering factors are necessary to achieve the optimal strength.
$UO_2$ microsphere particles, core material of HTGR(High Temperature Gas Reactor) nuclear fuel, were prepared using by the GSP(Gel Supported Precipitation) method which is a modified-method of the wet sol-gel process. The spherical shape of initial liquid ADU droplets from the vibration nozzle system was continuously kept till the conversion to the final $UO_2$ microsphere. But the size of a final $UO_2$ microsphere was shrunken to about 25% of an initial ADU droplet size. Also, we found that the composition of dried-ADU gel particles was constituted of the very complicated phases, coexisted the U=O, C-H, N-H, N-O, and O-H functional groups by FT-IR. The important factors for obtain the no-crack $UO_2$ microsphere during the thermal treatment processes must perfectly wash out the remained-$NH_4NO_3$ within the ADU gel particle in washing process and the selections of an appropriate heating rate at a suitable gas atmosphere, during the calcining of ADU gel particles, the reducing of $UO_3$ particles, and the sintering of $UO_2$ particles, respectively.
