  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate variables and construct paths that affect complicated grief. Methods: Participants in this cross-sectional, descriptive study were 164 bereaved spouses of cancer patients at least 12 months before the death. Data were collected from October 2016 to February 2017 using self-report structured questionnaires and were analyzed using IBM SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 20.0. Results: The variables affecting complicated grief of bereaved spouses of cancer patients were the quality of end-of-life care (${\gamma}=.15$, p<.001), preparedness for death (${\beta}=-.06$, p=.005), and coping with bereavement (${\beta}=-.24$, p<.001), whereas the quality of death and dying did not show any effects. Preparedness for death had multiple mediating effects in the relationship between the quality of end-of-life care and complicated grief (z=-2.20, p=.028), and in the relationship between the quality of end-of-life care and coping with bereavement (z=2.11, p=.035). Coping with bereavement had a mediating effect on the relationship between preparedness for death and complicated grief (z=-2.39, p=.017). Conclusion: This study revealed that preparedness for death and coping with bereavement play a prominent role in complicated grief. Therefore, it is important to help in preparing for death and enhancing coping with bereavement of spouses providing end-of-life care to cancer patients. In addition, investigating cultural differences in the relationship between the quality of end-of-life care and complicated grief is recommended.

  • Objectives: Oral diseases can be prevented, and early treatment through dental checkups is important. This study was investigated the relationship between dental checkups and unmet dental care needs in Korean adults. Methods: From the data of the 7th Korean national health and nutrition survey (2016-2017), the final 9,300 of the 16,277 participants selected as the method for extracting stratified colonies by complex sample design. A structured questionnaire interview was used, and chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: The relationship between dental checkups and unmet dental care needs for the last one year was analyzed by controlling demographic characteristics, variables related to health conditions, and "use of dental clinics for the last year." The unmet dental care needs were 7.57 times higher (CI: 6.49-8.83) for non-users of dental clinics for 1 year, and 1.32 times (CI: 1.13-1.54) for dental checkups for 1 year compared to non-dental checkups patients. Conclusions: As described above, there was a close relationship between adult dental checkups and unmet dental care needs. Therefore, it is suggested that it is necessary to expand educational publicity and prepare policy strategies such as visiting dental checkups to improve the adult dental checkups.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among knowledge and attitude toward palliative care and perception of death for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 110 nurses who work in NICUs in South Korea. The participants filled out a questionnaire regarding their knowledge, attitude towards palliative care and perception of death. The attitude scale was divided into 3 subscales: comfort level, nurses' role and nurses' involvement with family. Results: Comfort level regarding attitude towards palliative care was positively correlated with knowledge (r=.220, p=.016) and the perception of death (r=.194, p=.042). Nurses' role showed a positive correlation with perception of death (r=.395, p=.001). Conclusion: NICU nurses' knowledge of palliative care was below standard across the board, implying that there is a definite need for palliative care education for nurses. The education program for palliative care should include a section that focuses on fostering a positive perception of death as well as defining and delineating the role of nurses.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the experience of the mother-daughter relationship among middle-aged women in depth through the process of admission to nursing home facilities of their dementia mother. For the purpose, 8 middle-aged women whose dementia mothers were admitted to nursing care facilities were selected as research subject, and data collection was carried out through individual interviews. As a result of this research based on the phenomenological method of Colazzi, 3 categories, 6 sub-categories, and 17 subject bundles were derived. Research results can be summarized as follows: First, the mother-daughter relationship was dramatically reversed in the process of mother's admission to the nursing care facilities. Second, in the process of dementia mother's admission to the nursing care facilities, it was confirmed that daughters rather than sons were in an independent position regarding care and management. Third, in the process of dementia mother's admission to the nursing care facilities, it turned out that the entire family experiences depression, anxiety, and feeling of loss due to a sudden change in mother-daughter relationship as well as further transformation in family relationship, suggesting that there is a need to operate education or consultation programs for the family members to help them accommodate and deal with the sudden change.
