  • This is the study on the development of fusion heat dissipation of carbon magnesium materials. The purpose of this study is for effective utilization of heat emission which is the core of LED lighting. The result of study enabled the derivation of side satisfying result of making the surface temperature of lighting to be below $70^{\circ}C$ (actual measurement: $58^{\circ}C$) using magnesium. The lighting products that use magnesium was made possible based on the result of this study. Also from the performance aspect such as light distribution, the measurement of light efficiency demonstrated the level of 90 lm/W. Therefore the commercialization of lighting was made possible and the efficiency could be further enhanced by supplementation of LED performance.

  • In this study, an electro-catalyst of Pt nanoparticles supported by polypyrrole-functionalized graphene (Pt/PPy-reduced graphene oxide [RGO]) is reported. The Pt nanoparticles are deposited on the PPy-RGO composite by chemical reduction of H2PtCl6 using NaBH4. The presence of graphene (RGO) caused higher activity. This might have been due to increased electro-chemically accessible surface areas, increased electronic conductivity, and easier charge-transfer at polymer-electrolyte interfaces, allowing higher dispersion and utilization of the deposited Pt nano-particles. Microstructure, morphology and crystallinity of the synthesized materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed successful deposition of Pt nano-particles, with crystallite size of about 2.7 nm, on the PPy-RGO support film. Catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation in fuel cells was investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The fundamental electrochemical test results indicated that the electro-catalytic activity, for methanol oxidation, of the Pt/PPy-RGO combination was much better than for commercial catalyst.

  • Instead of barium carbonate, domestic barite was used as the flux in manufacturing theinsulating porcelain. To avoid the problems arising from the decomposition of barite in the body during firing, BaO.$Al_2O_3$ was synthesized at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. synthetic BaO.$Al_2O_3$ was mixed with other materials such as kaoline, alumina, clay, dolomite. The RO content (CaO. MgO. BaO) of the batches was varied from range of 4 to 14wt. % at 2wt. % - intervals, and firing temperature was varied from 1280 to 140$0^{\circ}C$-at 4$0^{\circ}C$ intervals The properties such as water absorption, bulk density. mechnical strength, specific resistance, and linear shrinkage were measured. The body containing 12 wt.% of RO content showed the satisfactory for the application in the Fixed Carbon Film Resistor.

  • A bacterial consortium capable of utilizing a variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been isolated from a former manufactured gas plant site. The consortium consisted of four members including Arthrobacter sp., Burkholderia sp., Ochrobacterium sp., and Alcaligenes sp., which were identified and characterized by the patterns of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME analysis) and carbon source utilization (BIOLOG system). With the individual members, the biodegradation characteristics of aromatic hydrocarbons depending on different growth substrates were determined. FAME analyses demonstrated that microbial fatty acid profiles changed to significant extents in response to different carbon sources, and hence, such shift profiles may be informative to characterize the biodegradation potential of a bacterium or microbial community.

  • Recently, sea algae cultivation as carbon sink and carbon dioxide fixation have been considered. Also, various researches on bioenergy derived from sea algae and the utilization of fibers, saccharide, and lipid of sea algae have been performing. Till now, algae fibers has been used for manufacturing of paper and reinforcing of polymer composites and the extracts of sea algae are used for cosmetics, pharmaceutical materials and food such as agar. Especially, algae fiber has so similar properties to cellulose in terms of crystallinity and functional groups that it can be utilized as reinforcements of biocomposites. Biocomposites as alternatives of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites are environmentally friendly polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers and are actively applying to the automobiles and construction industries. In this paper, characteristics of algae fiber and biocomposites reinforced with algae fiber as environmentally friendly energy materials have been introduced.

  • Three strains of Clostridium thermocellum, JH01, JH20 and JH30 which are capable of producing ethanol directly from cellulose were isolated from composts. The morphological, cultural and physiological properties of the strains were similar to the ATCC type strain, except for carbon source utilization and degree of ethanol tolerance. All of the three isolates could use glucose and maltose as a sole carbon source and two of them, strains of JH01 and JH20 were three times more tolerant to ethanol than the ATCC type strain. Cellulases secreted by the isolated strains had higher activities than those of the ATCC type strain.

  • Macroalgae has been strongly touted as an alternative biomass for biofuel production due to its higher photosynthetic efficiency, carbon fixation rate, and growth rate compared to conventional cellulosic plants. However, its unique carbohydrate composition and structure limits the utilization efficiency by conventional microorganisms, resulting in reduced growth rates and lower productivity. Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that it is possible to enable microorganisms to utilize various sugars from seaweeds and to produce some energy chemicals such as methane, ethanol, etc. This paper introduces the basic information on macroalgae and the overall conversion process from harvest to production of biofuels. Especially, we will review the successful efforts on microbial engineering through metabolic engineering and synthetic biology to utilize carbon sources from red and brown seaweed.

  • To find ${\alpha}-amylase$ inhibitors produced by microorganisms from soil, a strain which had a strong inhibitory activity against bacterial ${\alpha}-amylase$ was isolated from the soil sample collected in Korea. The morphological and physiological characteristics of this strain on several media and its utilization of carbon sources showed that it was one of Streptomyces species according to the International Streptomyces Project method. The amylase inhibitor of this strain was purified by active carbon adsorption, silicagel column chromatography, SP-Sephadex C-25 column chromatography, adsorption on Amberlite XAD-2. The inhibitor was oligosaccharide which was composed of glucose. The inhibitor had inhibitory activity against other amylase such as salivary ${\alpha}-amylase$, pancreatic ${\alpha}-amylase$, fungal ${\alpha}-amylase$ and gluco-amylase.

  • The database of metabolic fingerprints generated using the GIolog system of lactic acid bacteria isolated from kimchi, described by Lee et al. (8), was used for the identification of 75 Leuconostoc isolates. The test strains were isoalted using a selective isolation medium specific for the genus Leuconostoc and examined for their ability to oxidize carbon sources using the Biolog system. The results show that the 75 test strains were identified to the known Leuconostoce clusters. It is suggested that the Biolog system can be applied for rapid identification of lactic acid bacteria isolated from kimchi.
