The Effect of Mechanochemical Treatment of Supported Catalyst on the Growth of Carbon Nanotubes

  • As an pretreatment, a Fe$(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O-Al(OH)_3$mixture was ground by a high energy mill and used as a supported catalyst for the growth of carbon nanotubes by a thermal CVD. The crystal structure of the catalyst disordered by the grinding influenced significantly the synthesis of carbon nanotubes in a thermal CVD.

  • PSf/D2EHPA/CNT beads were prepared by immobilizing di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) on polysulfone (PSf) and used to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. Optimum pH was in the range of 4 to 6. The removal kinetic of Cu(II) by the prepared PSf/D2EHPA/CNT beads was mainly governed by internal diffusion, and the diffusion coefficient of Cu(II) by PSf/D2EHPA/CNT beads was found to be $2.19{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}2.64{\times}10^{-4}cm^2/s$. The Langmuir isotherm model predicted the experimented data well. The maximum removal capacity of Cu(II) obtained from this isotherm was 7.32 mg/g. Calculated thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}G^o$, ${\Delta}H^o$ and ${\Delta}S^o$ showed that the adsorption of Cu(II) ions onto PSf/D2EHPA/CNT beads was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic at 293-323 K.

  • The sol-gel technique has been studied to fabricate a homogeneous Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst. Ambient effects (air, Ar, and $H_2$) on thermal decomposition of the citrate precursor have been systematically investigated to fabricate an Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst. Severe agglomeration of metal catalyst was observed under thermal decomposition of citrate precursor in air atmosphere. Ar/$H_2$ atmosphere effectively restricted agglomeration of bimetallic catalyst and formation of highly-dispersed Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst with high specific surface-area due to the formation of Fe-Mo nanoclusters within MgO support. High-quality thin-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (t-MWCNTs) with uniform diameters were achieved on a large scale by catalytic decomposition of methane over Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst prepared under Ar-atmosphere. The produced t-MWCNTs had outer diameters in the range of 4-8 nm (average diameter ~6.6 nm) and wall numbers in the range of 4-7 graphenes. The as-synthesized t-MWCNTs showed product yields over 450% relative to the utilized Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst, and indicated a purity of about 85%.

  • we have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes on a large area of Co-Ni codeposited Si substrates by thermal chemical vapor deposition using $C_{2}H_{2}$ gas. The carbon nanotubes grown by the thermal chemical vapor deposition are multi-wall structure, and the wall solace of nanotubes is covered with defective carbons or carbonaceous particles. The carbon nanotubes range from 50 to 120nm in diameter and about $130{\mu}m$ in length at $950^{\circ}C$. The turn-on voltage was about $0.8V/{\mu}m$ with a current density of $0.1{\mu}A/cm^2$ and emission current reveals the Fowler-Nordheim mode.

Stability and Electronic Properties of the Adsorption of Molecular Hydrogen on Metal-containing Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes

  • The binding ability and hydrogen storage capacity of nitrogen doped carbon nanotube with divacancy (4NDCNxNT) that is decorated with transition metals was investigated based on density functional theory calculations. Results indicate that scandium shows an ideal reversible hydrogen binding capability with promising system-weight efficiency compared with other transition metals when functionalized with 4ND-CNxNT. The (Sc/4ND)10-CNxNT can store up to 50H2 molecules, corresponding to a maximum gravimetric density of 5.8 wt%. Detailed structural stability and electronic properties were reported as hydrogen molecules were absorbed. It takes about 0.16 eV/H2 to add one H2 molecule, which assures reversible storage of H2 molecules under ambient conditions.

  • Nanowires of polytetrakis(o-aminophenyl)porphyrin (PTAPPNW) were fabricated by electrochemical polymerization with the cyclic voltammetric method in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. The glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by PTAPPNW, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and Nafion as a binder was investigated with voltammetric methods in a phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution at pH 7.4. The PTAPPNW + SWNT + Nafion/GCE exhibited strongly enhanced voltammetric and amperometric sensitivity towards hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), which shortened the response time and enhanced the sensitivity for $H_2O_2$ determination at an applied potential of 0.0 V by amperometric method. The PTAPPNW + SWNT + Nafion/GCE can be used to monitor $H_2O_2$ at very low concentrations in biological pH as an efficient electrochemical $H_2O_2$ sensor.

  • 열화학기상증착법으로 탄소나노튜브를 합성할 때, 촉배전구체로 사용하는 Fe(NO$_3$)$_3$.9$H_2O$-Al(OH)$_3$혼합물을 믹서밀을 이용하여 혼합분쇄한 후, 이 혼합물을 사용하영 합성에 미치는 메카노케미컬 효과를 조사하였다. SEM과 TEM 관찰 결과, 분쇄된 촉매 위에서 합성된 탄소생성물이 미분쇄 촉매위에서 성장한 생성물에 비해 훨씬 균일했으며, 대부분의 생성물이 탄소나노튜브로서 존재하였다. 또한, 전류-전압 측정을 통해서, 분쇄 촉매에서의 생성물의 전계 방출 특성이 미분쇄 촉매에서보다 우수함을 확인하였다.

  • We investigated a field emission property of CNTs grown on pre-treated substrates by $H_{2}$ plasma etching method in vacuum chamber (<${10^{-7}}$ Torr). To improve the emission characteristics, various catalysts and buffer layers were used. The morphology and density of catalyst layer was controlled by the different plasma pre-treatment conditions, resulting in the control of the growth characteristics of CNTs.

  • We have synthesized carbon nanotubes by thermal chemical vapor deposition of $C_2H_2$ on transition metal-coated silicon substrates. Carbon nanotubes are uniformly synthesized on a large area of the plain Si substrates, different from Previously reported porous Si substrates. It is observed that surface modification of transition metals deposited on substrates by either etching with dipping in a HF solution and/or $NH_3$ pretreatment is a crucial step for the nanotube growth prior to the reaction of $C_2H_2$ gas. We will demonstrate that the diameters of carbon naotubes can be controlled by applying the different transition metals.

  • Recent studies demonstrated the ability of carbon nanotube (CNT) to promote electron transfer reactions of important compounds and to impart higher stability onto electrochemical sensors. CNT-based sensors measured by hydroxyl radical concentration or pH value suggest great promise for biosensors. This paper describes a new method for fabricating a very simple and inexpensive pH sensor compose of single walled-carbon nanotubes (SW-CNTs) using an ultra-precision spray. CNT-based sensor shows pH sensitivity in buffer solution at different pH range. Our experimental results show the sensor responses to pH buffer solution and the conductance of depends on the pH values. These results support application possibility of SW-CNTs based pH sensor for mass production.
