  • This study was conducted to investigate for the natural methane emission inhibitor as a feed additive no adversely effect on rumen fermentation. Five different Control (Wheat barn (0.05 g), MRA(Methane Reduction Additive)-1 (Allium fistulosum L. (0.05 g)), MRA-2 (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (0.025 g) + Wheat barn (0.025 g) mixed), MRA-3 (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (0.025 g) + Wheat barn (0.025 g) mixed), and MRA-4 (Allium fistulosum L. (0.02 g) + Tannic acid (0.02 g) + Wheat barn (0.01 g) mixed) contents were used to perform 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 48 h incubation for in vitro fermentation. Ruminal pH values were ranged within normal ruminal microbial fermentation. Dry matter digestibility was not significantly different across the treatments during the whole fermentation time. Also, the result of microbial growth had no adversely effect on during the whole fermentation time. At 24 h, methane emission was significantly lower (P<0.05) than all treatments except to MRA-1. Especially, MRA-4 carbon dioxide emission was significantly lower (P<0.05) than control at 9, 24 and 48 h incubation. In addition MRA-4 propionate concentration was significantly higher (P<0.05) than control at 24 h incubation. The result of RT-PCR Ciliate-associated methanogens were significantly lower (P<0.05) at MRA-1, MRA-3 and MRA-4 than control at 24 h incubation. Based on the present results, MRA-4 could be suggestible methane emission inhibitor as a natural feed additive.

  • Carbon dioxide generated from construction materials and construction material industry among the fields of construction is approximately 67 million tons. It is about 30% of the carbon dioxide generated in the fields of construction. In order to reduce carbon dioxide in the fields of construction, it is necessary to control the use of fossil fuel consumed and decrease carbon emission by reducing the secondary and tertiary curing generating carbon dioxide in construction material industry. Therefore, this study manufactured mortar by having cement as the Plain and substituting three binding materials up to 50% and then adopted different curing methods to analyze congelation and strength characteristics. Test results for strength property by changing binding materials showed that specimens with blast furnace slag, CSA 15% and CAMC 5% resulted in positive effect for strength.

  • Renewable and unutilized energy (biogas power generation, wind power, solar, small hydro-power, sewage heat source, etc.) seems to be suitable to install for the sewage treatment facilities. There are 357 sewage treatment plants in 2007. 17 plants among these have been operating for self-supporting energy by using solar power, small hydro-power and biogas in 2008. Newly built sewage treatment plant of 96,000 $m^3$/day for a newtown is expected to get up to energy consumption of 10 GWh/yr. If solar energy, small hydro-power and biogas-equipments were applied to the new treatment plant, self-supporting energy of the new sewage treatment plant will get up to 56.1%. As a results, about 2,379ton $CO_2$/yr $CO_2$ emission reduction can be expected by using renewable energy. These efforts for self-supporting energy will lead sewage treatment plant to new energy recycle center.

  • To estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, we established inventory of conventional rice cultivation from farmers in Gunsan and Iksan, Jeonbuk province in 2011~2012. This study was to calculate carbon footprint and to analyse the major factor of GHGs. We carried out a sensitivity analysis using the analyzed main factors of GHGs and estimated the mitigation potential of GHGs. Also we tried to suggest agricultural methods to reduce GHGs that farmers of this case study can apply. Carbon footprint of rice production unit of 1 kg was 2.21 kg $CO_2.-eq.kg^{-1}$. Although amount of $CO_2$ emissions is largest among GHGs, methane had the highest contribution of carbon footprint on rice production system after methane was converted to carbon dioxide equivalent ($CO_2$-eq.) multiplied by the global warming potential (GWP). Source of $CO_2$ in the cultivation of rice farming is incomplete combustion of fossil fuels used by agricultural machinery. Most of the $CH_4$ emitted during rice cultivation and major factor of $CH_4$ emission is flooded paddy field in anaerobic condition. Most of the $N_2O$ emitted from rice cultivation process and major sources of $N_2O$ emission is application of fertilizer such as compound fertilizer, urea, orgainc fertilizer, etc. As a result of sensitivity analysis due to the variation in energy consumption, diesel had the highest sensitivity among the energies inputs. If diesel consumption is reduced by 10%, it could be estimated that $CO_2$ potential reduction is about 2.5%. When application rate of compound fertilizer reduces by 10%, the potential reduction is calculated to be approximately 1% for $CO_2$ and approximately 1.8% for $N_2O$. When drainage duration is decreased until 10 days, methane emissions is reduced by approximately 4.5%. That is to say drainage days, tillage, and reducing diesel consumption were the main sources having the largest effect of GHG reduction due to changing amount of inputs. Accordingly, proposed methods to decrease GHG emissions were no-tillage, midsummer drainage, etc.

  • This study demonstrated the emission of combustion gases of medium density fibreboard (MDF)s coated with piperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (PIPEABP), methylpiperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (MPIPEABP), N,N-dimethylethylenediaminomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (MDEDAP), or bis-(dimethylaminomethyl) phosphinic acid (DMDAP). Each MDFs were coated in three times with a brush with 15 wt% aqueous solution of the phosphorus-nitrogen acid additives. After the specimens were dried at room temperature, the emission of combustion gases was tested using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1, 2). The peak smoke production rate ($SPR_{peak}$) of the specimens coated with phosphorus-nitrogen acids was 18.5 to 41.5%, which is lower than that of using the virgin plate. However, the production of peak carbon monoxide ($CO_{peak}$) was 6.7 to 24.2% higher than that of using the virgin plate. Also, the peak carbon dioxide ($CO_{2peak}$) was 4.2 to 24.4% lower than that of using virgin plate. While the peak oxygen depletion rate was much higher than the level of 15%, which can be fatal to humans and the resulting risk could thus be eliminated. Overall, the combustibility of coated specimens was partially suppressed, but showed a negative effect on the reduction of carbon monoxide.

  • The global warming phenomenon emerges from the issue of climate change, which attracts the attention of intellectuals towards clean energy sources from dirty energy sources. Among clean sources, nuclear energy is getting immense attention among policymakers. However, the role of nuclear energy in pollution emissions reduction has remained inconclusive and demand for further investigation. Therefore, the current study contributes to extend knowledge by investigating the nexus between nuclear energy, economic growth, and CO2 emissions in a developing country context such as Pakistan for the period between 1973 and 2017. The auto-regressive distributive lag model summarizes the nuclear energy has negative effect on environmental pollution as it releases carbon emission in the environment. Moreover, vector error correction Granger causality provides evidence for bidirectional causality between nuclear energy and carbon emissions. These interesting findings provide new insight, and policy guidelines provided based on these results.

  • The earlier studies have analyzed theoretical links between nuclear energy and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions concerning territorial (or production-based) emissions. Here using the latest available dataset, this study explores the impacts of nuclear energy on production-based and consumption-based CO2 emission in the era of globalization for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. The Driscoll-Kraay regression method reveals that nuclear energy is beneficial for the reduction of production-based CO2 emissions. However, it is revealed that nuclear energy does not reduce consumption-based CO2 emissions that are traded internationally and hence not comprised in conventional production-based emissions (territory) inventories. Globalization tends to reduce both production-based and demand-based carbon emissions. Finally, Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) is validated for both kinds of CO2 emissions. The findings may deliver practical policy implications related to nuclear energy and CO2 emissions for selected countries.

  • It is well known that the majority of the emissions measured from vehicle exhaust in the US Federal Test Procedure(FTP-75) are emitted during the first 60 seconds. This paper describes an experimental study on SI engine emissions reduction after cold start with interval secondary air injection and coolant control. Secondary air injection after cold start to reduce exhaust emissions causes an exothermic reaction at the exhaust port and gives sufficient air to the catalyst. For that reason engine-out emissions oxidized in the exhaust port and the rapid heating of a catalytic converter after cold start with CSAI and ISAI are estimated. The influence of the coolant temperature on SI engine emissions has been estimated. In the present studycoolant control of the cylinder head tempeature is used to investigate the effect of coolant temperature on SI engine emissions. The results show that engine-out hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions are considerably reduced with interval secondary air injection and coolant control.
