  • Demand for high speed sea transportation modes has been increased dramatically last few decades. The WIG(Wing-in-ground effect) is considered as next generation maritime transportation system. In the structural design of high speed marine vessels, an estimation of water impact loads is essential. The dynamic structural responses of the WIG excited by the water impact loads may bring an important contribution to their damage process. The work presented in this paper is focused on the numerical simulation of the water impact on the WIG craft when it lands. It is aimed to study the structural responses of the WIG craft subjected to the water impact loads. The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method is used to simulate the water impact of the WIG craft during a landing phase. A full 3D shell element is used to model the WIG craft in carbon composites, and a developed FE model is used to investigate the effect of the water impact loads on the structural responses of the WIG craft. In the analysis, two different landing scenarios are considered and their effects on the structural responses are investigated.

  • Determination of the wood content in wood plastic composite (WPC) is crucial to form reliable WPC market. WPC with simple formulation consisting of only two components (wood flour and polypropylene) was examined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) for determining wood content in the WPC. TGA method using derivative peak temperature (DTp) of polypropylene under low heating rate ($5^{\circ}C/min$) showed more reliable calibration curve and lower error factor compared to method of using the percentage of weight loss of wood flour. In addition, AMS using bio-based carbon content showed greater reliability for the determination of wood content in the WPC in comparison with the TGA method.

  • EPDM compounds and vulcanizates containing inorganic filler such as talc, calcium carbonate, or clay as well as carbon black were prepared, and the influence of inorganic filler on properties of the EPDM compounds and vulcanizates were investigated. The bound rubber contents did not significantly increase even though the inorganic filler was added. There were big aggregates in the EPDM samples with high loading inorganic filler. By adding the inorganic filler, the cure times tended to increase and the delta torque decreased. The modulus were on the whole decreased, whereas the elongation at break, tensile strength, and tear strength were increased by adding the inorganic filler. The decreased modulus and increased elongation at break can be explained with the decreased delta torque, the increases of tensile strength and tear strength can be explained with the increased elongation at break. By adding the inorganic filler, level of reinforcing in the EPDM compounds did not increase and the crosslink density decreased.

  • Recently, high growth potential of barrier materials industry including high performance packing materials was expected with increasing the national income and well-being culture. As high barrier materials, polymer nanocomposites have considerable attractions due to their excellent physical properties compared to conventional composite materials. In general, polymer nanocomposites were consisted of polymer matrix and inorganic fillers, such as layered silicate, carbon nanotubes, and metal- or inorganic nanoparticles. Among these materials, layered silicate which was called as the clay was usually used as nano-fillers because of naturally abundant and most economical and structural properties. Clay-reinforced polymer nanocomposites have various advantages, such as high strength, flammability, gas barrier property, abrasion resistance, and low shrinkage and used for automotive and packing materials. Therefore, in this paper, we focused on the need of gas barrier materials and materials-related technologies.

  • A fabrication process for SiC whisker preform reinforced AC4A Al composites is being developed. The Al alloy used as the matrix in this study is AC4A. SiC whisker preform made by Tokai Carbon Co. Ltd. Shizuoka, Japan were used. These consisted of $\beta$-type single crystals 0.1 ~ 10${\mu}$m in diameter and 20~10${\mu}$m in length. The most adequate fabrication condition was that whisker preform was preheated up to 750~80$0^{\circ}C$, set into a mould preheated to ~40$0^{\circ}C$, molten Al alloy heated to ~80$0^{\circ}C$ and applied pressure 75MPa. And Si$C_w$reinforced AC4A composite was advanced above twice than AC4AI/M. Also it was not large effect by pressure at Si$C_w$ 20v/o.

  • In this study, an investigation of shear wave ultrasonic technique was carried out to detect stacking orientation error for CF/Epoxy quasi-isotropy composite laminates. The ultrasonic shear wave is particularly sensitive to ply orientation and layup sequence in tire CF/Epoxy composite laminates. In the manufacturing of composite laminates, it is important that layup errors be detected in samples. In this work, an effect was mack to develop shear wave techniques that can be applied to composite laminates. During testing, the mast significant problem is that the couplant conditions do not remain the same because of its changing viscosity. The design and use of a shear ware transducer would greatly alleviate the couplant problem. A pyramid of aluminum, with isosceles triangle (two 45o angles) sides, was made to generate shear waves, using two longitudinal transducers based on an ultrasonic-polarized mechanism. A signal splitter was connected to the pulser jack on a pulser/receiver and to the longitudinal transducers. The longitudinal transducers were mounted with mineral oil, and the shear transducer was mounted with burnt honey on the bottom as a receiver. The shear wave was generated at a maximum and a minimum based on the ultrasonic-polarized mechanism. Results show it is feasible to measure layup error using shear wave transducers on a stacking of prepregs in composites.

  • The research efforts directed at advancing water electrolysis technology continue to intensify together with the increasing interest in hydrogen as an alternative source of energy to fossil fuels. Among the various water electrolysis systems reported to date, systems employing a solid polymer electrolyte membrane are known to display both improved safety and efficiency as a result of enhanced separation of products: hydrogen and oxygen. Conducting water electrolysis in an alkaline medium lowers the system cost by allowing non-platinum group metals to be used as catalysts for the complex multi-electron transfer reactions involved in water electrolysis, namely the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER, respectively). We briefly review the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and electrocatalysts developed and applied thus far in alkaline AEM water electrolysis (AEMWE) devices. Testing the developed components in AEMWE cells is a key step in maximizing the device performance since cell performance depends strongly on the structure of the electrodes containing the HER and OER catalysts and the polymer membrane under specific cell operating conditions. In this review, we discuss the properties of reported AEMs that have been used to fabricate membrane-electrode assemblies for AEMWE cells, including membranes based on polysulfone, poly(2,6-dimethyl-p-phylene) oxide, polybenzimidazole, and inorganic composite materials. The activities and stabilities of tertiary metal oxides, metal carbon composites, and ultra-low Pt-loading electrodes toward OER and HER in AEMWE cells are also described.

  • A new non-destructive fatigue prediction model of the composite laminates is developed. The natural frequencies of fatigue-damaged laminates under extensional loading are related to the fatigue life of the laminates by establishing the equivalent flexural stiffness reduction as a function of the elastic properties of sublaminates. The flexural stiffness is derived by relating the 90-ply elastic modulus reduction, and using the laminate plate theory to the degraded elastic modulus and the intact elastic modulus of other laminates. The natural frequency reduction model, in which the dominant fatigue mode can be identified from the sensitivity scale factors of sublaminate elastic properties, provides natural frequency vs. fatigue cycle curves for the composite laminates. Vibration tests were also conducted on $[{90}_2/0_2]_s$ carbon/epoxy laminates to verify the natural frequency reduction model. Correlations between the predictions of the model and experimental results are good.

  • To determine the effect of chain length and chemical structure of linear amine curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, a standard bifunctional linear DGEBF epoxy resin was cured with EDA and HMDA having amine group at the both ends of main chain in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio in condition of preliminary and post cure. From this work, the effect of linear amine curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties is significantly influenced by numbers of carbon atoms of main chain. In contrast, the results show that the DCEBF/EDA system having two carbons had higher values in the thermal stability, density, shrinkage (%), grass transition temperature, tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength than the DGEBF/HMDA system having six carbons, whereas the DGEBF/EDA cure system had relatively low values in maximum ekothermic temperature, maximum conversion of epoxide, thermal expansion coefficient than the DGEBF/HDMA cure system. These findings indicate that the packing capability (rigid property) in the EDA structure affects the thermal and mechanical properties predominantly. It shows that flexural fracture properties have a close relation to flexural modulus and strength.

  • This paper describes the bone healing process of fractured long bones such as a tibia applied by composite IM rods using finite element analysis. To simulated tissue differentiation process mechano-regulation theory with a deviatoric strain was implemented and a user's subroutine programmed by a Python code for an iterative calculation was used. To broadly find the appropriate rod modulus for healing bone fractures, composite IM rods were analyzed considering the stacking sequence. To compare mechanical stimulation at fracture gap, two kinds of initial loading conditions were applied. As a result, it was found that the initial loading condition was the most sensitive factor for the healing performance. In case a composite IM rod made of a plain weave carbon fiber/epoxy (WSN3k) had a stacking sequence of $[{\pm}45]_{nT}$, the healing efficiency was the most effective under a initial load of 10%BW.
